We currently have the offline .target xxx command to pop up a target to the N of a plane. Turn toward it and shoot at target, see where rounds hit.
I was actually trying to use this earlier today and was really annoyed at how, even with my hand off the stick and in auto level, I could not keep the pipper on the center of the target. I was trying to figure out the massive cones of dispersion on the IL2, but even when I thought I was dead level and due N, my rounds strayed in lines sideways as I fired.
This kept screwing up my tests!!!!!!
I would like either one of two things. Either change the current target, or add a second one.
I wish that target, when it pops up, stays DEAD AHEAD of the plane at all times, all angles, and only changes distance based on the number entered (.target xxx). This would mean that the target should be centered with the gunsight at all times, unless you move your head position and so forth.

Could the lateral displacement come from recoil of the guns?

Negative. It was a steady drift in only one direction. It was because no matter how hard I tried to put my nose on "due North", I was always a hair off and over a few seconds' worth of time that showed up with a drift in the target itself

Krusty doing what you ask would change the dispersion patern on the target. And hence why it is not done that way.

I'm not sure I understand. The plane is in position, the bullets will fire from the plane, aimed via the gunsight (also attached to plane), so it's all relative. If the target were "attached" the the plane, too, then wouldn't that be MORE accurate? It would mean you'd only get dispersion on the target, and not see variations from drift of the plane itself.
Unless I've misunderstood?

What about both options? One "fixed" on the sights to get an exact idea of the dispersal pattern, ballistics, etc. The other as it is now to account for the effects of drift? Maybe in-flight uses the setup that it is now, and when you go to set convergence you get a "firing range" where you can test-fire and see the effects of your convergence settings on the target?

Krusty Firing the guns puts forces on the plane both changing the pitch yawing the plane. This has the effect of changing the dispersion pattern. If you fix the target to the the plane so it would always be centered in your sight, in effect you are moving the target with those forces. And hence would give false dispersion patterns.

Hrm... I see what you're saying, HT. I just wish it were a little easier (somehow) to test guns on a target. Thanks for the reply.

I am a really bad shot and am in constant need of some method of checking/visualising my error...............
I would like............
A) to be able to see the lead computing sight during play back in film.
B) to fit a target to a drone off line
C) to fit a target to an aircraft during play back in film.
The face of this target would rotate to look at me but its centre remain fixed to the CoG of the (target) aircraft.
