I've downloaded a couple of those movie clips, and I'm STUNNED.

Big deal! N1k2 can do that. :D
-
Huhmmm...now that I think about it...you're right :D
-
Wait until you see some films of F-22 doing ACM against F-15. :D
-
Does the F-22 allow controlled flight with AoAs of 70°? ...that little bird in the clips does ;)
-
It should Ram... it has the vectored nozzle thrust too. Though, I doubt it can match that plane. Basically, that one was built specifically to test the bounds of maneuverability. It is not intended to be anything other than experimental.
Saw a pretty decent Wings special that had it in there. Seems I recall it being a joint US/Germany project.
Anyways... when it comes to jet fighters... its all good :D They're all better than my Audi.

RAM I don't know if it was 70 deg. but the stuff I saw was certainly in the "ridiculously large" AoA category. Certainly nothing I've ever seen an F-15 or F-16 get even close to in an airshow aerobatic display. :)

Looks like 60 deg. is the magic number: http://www2.acc.af.mil/accnews/aug99/990262.html (http://www2.acc.af.mil/accnews/aug99/990262.html)

I saw a video once of that plane fighting an F-18. POOOOOOR f18!!!! got it's arse handed to it quick. The x-36 would just go into some kind of post stall thing and kept the f18 in the HUD the whole time. Fight would have lasted about 10 seconds b4 the f18 was dead, had guns been used. The x36 crashed a couple of years ago didn't it? Shame :(
Thanks for the link Ram! I really like the "Mongoose" manuver :) Isn't the mongoose the only animal (mamil) that eats Kobras ;) I think you get my drift :D
-
Funked...well...another WOW! for the F-22 then :D
Udie, the plane is an X-31; there were two of them and yes, according to one of the links in the web page, one of them crashed in 1995. The other was used for further testing, and I would say that it still exists :)

RAM don't get too excited by the F-22. I think they are just now installing the radar. So all it is right now is a stealthy visual-range guns dogfighter. :)

Neat AC. that thing does some impressive stuff. I was reading an interesting artical in the ACC newspaper some time ago about where they were gonna staition the first operational unit of F22's. AT the time Homestead AFB (only a reserve unit after Hurricane Andrew) was in the running becuase they could take it past Mach without breaking the law. The thing as you know will cruise at mach without afterburners.

To be fair... the Wings special I watched said that 8 of these encounters were run... the x-36 won 7 of them.

too bad there is no use for it in real military service :(
