Post by: culero on February 20, 2006, 07:40:52 AM
Wanted:  Commanding Officer for Pearl Harbor scenario to run December 2006

The scenario Pearl Harbor 2006 is about ten months away.  We would like to start selecting candidates for Commanding Officer (CO).

Pearl Harbor is a popular scenario that has run in the past.  It has an interesting command structure because of the much larger number of players on the Japanese side.  To accommodate this asymmetric situation, participation in the scenario is divided into three groups:  Team Alpha, Team Beta, and Team Zeke.  Team Zeke flies all the Zeros and is under the command of the IJN CO.  Team Alpha starts as the US, and Team Beta starts as IJN command and flies the non-Zero element of the Japanese side.  Three frames are fought, and then Team Alpha and Team Beta switch roles for the next three frames.  Thus, Team Alpha and Team Beta both get their turns being the US and the Japanese, and whoever is the Japanese side commands Team Zeke as a resource.

The Team Alpha CO is already selected – Jordi – who has been a CO in Pearl Harbor twice before.  Team Zeke will be headed up by Leviathn and the Blue Knights Squadron.

We are now looking for a CO for Team Beta.  Besides formulating Team Beta’s strategy, making the strategic calls on game day, and selecting command staff and Group Leaders, the Team Beta CO will have the opportunity to influence the event’s design and implementation by being a core member of the development team from the start.

Pearl Harbor is a fun scenario that is perfectly balanced (because of the side switch aspect) and thoroughly play tested.  If being Team Beta CO sounds interesting to you, we would be very pleased to get an application from you.  Please send completed applications to:

PearlHarbor2006@gmail.com (PearlHarbor2006@gmail.com)

There are many qualities of a good CO:  being communicative and in touch with the team, being able to recruit capable players to serve as GL’s, being able to recruit players in general to fill out the ranks, being able to make sure the team is proficient and has practiced enough, having the experience to formulate battle strategies, and so on.  The questions below are intended to get your views on such various things.

---- Questionnaire ---- (copy and paste into e-mail please, intersperse answers)

What is your Aces High message-board name?

What is your Aces High in-flight name?

Why would you like to be CO?

Are you willing to put in the time required to be CO of a scenario and if so how much time do you believe it takes?

In which scenarios have you flown?

In which scenarios have you served as a Group Leader, Commanding Officer, or any other executive capacity?

How often do you visit the Aces High message board?

How often to you post on the Aces High message board?

When someone sends you e-mail, typically how long is it before you respond?

Who are some pilots you’d try to recruit into GL spots?

How would you recruit players in general?

What are your ideas for getting as many players as possible to practice?

Are you a member of a squad and if so which one?

Do you have good relationships with any other squads and if so which ones?

Does your squad cooperate with any others and if so in what way?

Are you well known in any particular arenas (such as main arena or axis vs. allies)?

Are you well liked in those arenas?

Are you organized and if so what are some examples of that?

Are you happy that there are no further questions in this questionnaire? :)

Our goal is to help bring about the most-enjoyable, most-involving scenarios possible, with large participation from the Aces High player base.  Selection of CO’s has a major impact on that goal, so we are very grateful that you took the time to fill out this questionnaire.  We truly appreciate it and appreciate your interest in scenarios!  If you have any suggestions on ways to improve any aspect of scenarios, including the CO-selection process, please let us know.

Hummm....I begin to see why the attention span in AH scenarios is
 only 3 - 4 frames....

Give me a good, well designed 12-frame scenario again like those we
flew in AW. I do miss my 10-page "orders"... and briefing rooms :)

 Keep at it Kelly!

The Times, they are a changing Saw :)

The level of detail in the planned events (take a peek at Stalins) Requires more detail at the beginning of the event and a deeper level of involvement through the design process.

When I announced the new team, I said "Brace Yourself"  :)

We're only booking the event development team. My SOP for scenarios is to have the COs as members of the event development team.

We'll probably book slots in the event somewhere around the end of October.

I will delete all your planes ahahaha! Seriously, no thanks... last time I was flight leader, I had 4 noobs that decided it would be 'cooler' to go down and take out the acks on a field (in a 109e) than stay high and scout for incomming bombers (the plan for the scenario). Don't get me wrong, I love flying scenarios, but I'll fly in as a pfc, thank you!

Culero, my friends call me 'goldfish' and offered me a blackberry for a reason...

I believe in fair play and sportsmanship.  To that end, I shall allow all American planes to get airborne before engaging.  Trust me.

GOOD question!

P-40s primarily, aided by some F4Fs.

The last two times we ran this scenario (at another game a long time away) this matchup turned out pretty dern well. Its all a matter of proper tactics.

I'd say I cant wait for the scenario, but...seeing how long winter has been..I cant say Im looking forward to December 2006.

I played in 2 prior Pearls (AW days). Was alot of fun. One of the best designs I think I've played in. Was a GL in the last one with Team Jordi. If I recall, last time the P40s rolled on dot vis. Its tough getting out, but those that do, can extend for alt and take out quite a few of the enemy.

Maybe a name change would clarify team roles. Might I suggest Teams Coffinstuffer and Bait as alternate identifiers for Alpha and Beta?
