Title: Tutor Feature - two seater, interactive instructor-student in-flight training
Post by: hacksaw1 on February 20, 2006, 10:02:06 AM
Not a wish so much, but a suggestion for the possible benefit of AH.

I thought it might be worth the effort to create an instructor-student subroutine in the code - based on the .join command, but a modification of it, named the ".tutor" dot command - that would allow a student pilot to fly a plane, as well as an onboard instructor via an override key.

Once .tutor is activated both student and instructor are "in" the plane and the student has control. An override key ("t" perhaps) would allow the instructor to take control of the plane from the student. Press again and control is returned to the student. Perhaps a small, floating, two light indicator box on screen could show who currently has control of the plane.

The student and instructor would be tuned to each other in the text buffer, and no problem with vox, though a private channel would have to be selected.

I'd like to think it would be possible to code this generally for all planes, and not one-by-one for each plane, but I don't know. You could also configure it so that Tutor only works in the Training Arena.

I also thought an AT-6 would go along great with this feature, with the student's view from the front seat and the instructor's view from the back. As an interim alternative, the SBD's vertical stab could be modified and the rear seat turned around and the canopy closed to produce a plane resembling an AT-6, or one of the BT birds. The SBD's performance unloaded would be docile enough for primary training for newbies, and you could practice gunnery as well. Give it a Navy yellow and silver skin and voila.

I thought a Tutor feature like this would help flatten the learning curve to AH a great deal and give new and veteran pilots the opportunity to learn new tricks directly from an instructor while in flight.

Best Regards,

Cement

yeah, i kind of like it. it could be hard to set up, but if there is time for it, it would be a useful training tool

I liek the idea, but again- too much coding, never going tohappen:(

Kind of like the "buddy-cord" used between RC transmitters for people learning to fly model aircraft.

Well, in my opinion, there would be coding, but might not be excessive if the benefit in helping potential customers outweighs the time requirements to write it. Some people aren't PC whizzes but would like to fly in a sim, and there are more than a few comments about how steep the learning curve is in this sim.

In any case, right now you can simultaneously have a pilot in a bomber using his controls to fly the plane while a gunner in the back uses his controls to position and fire the gun. So simultaneously both are inputing data from their controls to a single plane, and have different views (like a two seat plane). That code already exists.

I don't think it would be that hard to write up code for a switch that allows only one or the other to have control of the flight controls.

This is an idea mostly aimed at helping new customers get in the air with a lot less frustration.

Cement

This is the idea of the training mission in Combat Tour.

I like the idea. However, the 'tutor' would when they override the control would have to deal with his lag to the server and then on to the trainee and back which may make flying someone else plane across the web, with the inherent lag, a bit strange feeling/laggy.

Excellent idea..

And, having just read another player's AAR about a 'real life' flight SIM for a specific craft he is paid to fly, another twist to the instructor phase suddenly has a perverse attraction.

Allow the 'tutor' to selectively destroy/disable parts of the aircraft so the student can practice flying a busted craft.

For instance, disable left flap and it goes away.  Same with gear, wing, elevator, oil, coolant..  heck, even pilot wound ( imagine instructor slapping the #$@! out of the student. )

LOL - that would be fun... just because!
