Now, when I first read the story about Chavez giving his "dont mess with me" speech aimed at Condoleeza Rice, I laughed. I take the guy seriously and all, but he's a big showman. Now we get these embassy officials being tossed out of the country............
Anyway, some folks are thinking its serious enough for action.
They have used the words "danger to the US". Isnt that what they said about Saddam?

Unless he takes some direct action, the worst he can do is cut off oil export to the US. Other countries would welcome the chance to buy, and it would force us to find another source since we do import quite a bit of oil from there.
But that's an economic threat more than a security thing and if he did wage economic war on the US in that fashion, it would probably backfire. In addition to providing real world support to Pres Bush's alternative energy "message", we have a whole lot of "measures other than war" that would make it much more costly to Venezuela than to us.
Of course, with a massively divided congress it's not likely we'll have a unified response to any action by Venezuela. That'll hurt more than anything Chavez could possibly do to us.

I say just get it over with. Nuke everything and turn this place into an ice palace! The world as a whole has just gone stupid IMO:cool:

Feel free to leave at any time. I for one would like to stick around and your preference is unacceptable.
As to the latest grandstanding by chavez, it's far too early to go into panic mode. The more attention he can direct at the US the less than will be directed at his own domestic problems.
-
Just send my ex down there and watch him drive Chavez to the breaking point.
-
Why, is Chavez gay?
-
Any type of economic warfare that Chavez hopes to wage will backfire on the economic scale but gain rapid ground on the political scale as he will try to say the US is bullying him into whatever he tries to push.

YES, Venezuela is going to be the next Iraq.
Iraq is going to be the next Iran.
Iran is going to be the next Cuba.
Pakistan and Indonesia are both vying to be the next Afghanistan.
Latin America is going to be the next Communist Block.
China is going to be the next Soviet Union.
North Korea is just going to remain the rabid Pomeranian they've always been.
Palestine is going to take parliamentary politics to a whole new level of "cutthroat" and "explosive debate". ("You vote against me?!" Ka-Boom!)
Israel is going to add minefields and a moat to the planned wall they're building.
The CIA created bird flu, since their creating AIDS did not work as well as expected.
Poncho Villa is alive and well in Mexico and up to his old tricks.
General Pershing is well and truly dead.
Mexican military incursions into United States territory do not rate any mention during the State of the Union Address.
The State Department wants to give The Three Stooges and Monte Python both a run fer der money.
And John Stewart should have enough fodder from the last 2 years for another book by now.

Chavez has been going on this "America hates me!" thing for awhile now. I get the feeling that he wants to play the persecuted martyr because it makes him feel important.

Where the heck is Venezuela? West Texas?

The U.S. attempts to overthrow a DEMOCRATICLY elected official? The US tried to keep the rich elite in power.... Imagine that.
I know goverment agents that were going down there around 2002-2003. That alone says alot to me, despite not knowing the 'offical' reason for their travels.
On Rice:
"She's calling foreign ministers, she's called Spain, she has called Brazil, good friends of ours, and Austria, to warn them about Venezuela, to form a block against Venezuela," Chavez told reporters outside Miraflores Presidential Palace.
"What could be more aggressive? All we can do is resist this imperialist abuse and defeat it," he said.
If the U.S. even thinks about pursueing a war or a coup over a DEMOCRATICLY elected socialist govement ...well then it has truely become a goverment by the corporation for the corporation.
And if you wonder why he shows solidarity with carribean nations- maybe you should look at what people like Bill Clinton and orginizations like the WTO & World Bank have done to Jamaica. Hint: look under subsidies and 'do as I say, not as I do'.
Buy gas at Citgo - ... Or I guess you could get it from the house of Saud.

don't worry lazs, ill try my hardest not to agree with anything you say, ever, just to keep you happy.

He's not alone. My memory is failing me right now but wasnt the guy running for President in Columbia a few months back running on an anti-US agenda?

Did they drive F-16's for the CIA or were they snipers?

No actually .. he didn't talk about what he was doing down there. He was talking more about agency database integration in that conversation. No tales of scorpion stings ethier......
I just think the timeing was odd. It's something I noticed in my experiances, as oppsed to another link to an article. What it implies is up to you.
