FORT CAMPBELL, Kentucky (AP) -- Wearing vests covered in military patches, a band of motorcyclists rolls around the country from one soldier's funeral to another, cheering respectfully to overshadow jeers from church protesters.

They call themselves the Patriot Guard Riders, and they are more than 5,000 strong, forming to counter anti-gay protests held by the Rev. Fred Phelps at military funerals.

Phelps believes American deaths in Iraq are divine punishment for a country that he says harbors homosexuals. His protesters carry signs thanking God for so-called IEDs -- explosives that are a major killer of soldiers in Iraq.

From what I've read, Mr. Phelps' church consists almost entirely of him and his extended family.  Looks like the conservatives have their share of whacko protesters too.

A soldiers funeral is sacred.  I applaud the efforts of these fine motorcyclists!  Long may they thwart the shrill piping of the misguided redneck Phelps clan.

The Westboro baptist church came to Buckhannon for the memorial service of the Sago Miners.

They handed out there leaflets, and I even got to read one. They felt that the Miners deaths was god's will, and even claimed they were homosexual.

Fortunatley, for the televised service, The Guard Riders and Law enforcement made sure these people were no where near. These people are insane, and need to be snuffed.

From what I understand, the group is mostly un-or under-employed and is *hoping* for a physical confrontation.  Whether that's for tv coverage, to sue people, or whatever, who knows.

The groups is just lucky that for most military funerals, the soldier's buddies are still overseas.....I know what *I'd* of done if they pulled this stunt at a funeral for someone I served with, and I was stateside at the time.......
