Title: AH 2006 Con
Post by: Pyro on February 22, 2006, 11:49:52 AM
We delayed the Con last fall with the intention of rescheduling it to this June.  Our goal with this Con is to make it accessible as possible by keeping it very affordable for people to attend.  We wanted to do away with the general registration fee so that anybody could come by without having to pay a registration fee.  Things traditionally covered by the registration fee such as internet connection, t-shirts, hats, etc. would be shifted to ala carte pricing.  We also would need a local hotel with a very affordable room rate.

Unfortunately, it has proven difficult to find a place that meets our criteria.  We had surpassed our deadline to find a place and still had not come up with anything suitable.  We were ready to push it back to the fall when Coach did some checking for us through his contacts and came up with a good location.

However, we are now at the minimum amount of lead time needed to continue in June.  Otherwise our option is to push it back to the fall.  Our tentative plan is to hold the Con June 22-25 close to the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport.

We'd like to hear from those planning to attend the con this year if you prefer this date or would rather move it back to the fall.  Please respond to this thread with your preference if you are interested in attending the Con this year.

What will the status of "Combat Tour" be in June? I'm not planning on going to the Con without it.

Figured someone would ask that.

As long as I'm not in school; I'm hoping to attend this year.

June works for me.  And - even though it is soon - a summer con may work out for many other players.  Some are teachers, and summer is much more convenient for their attendance.

Hard to find a Hyatt style convention hall at Red Roof Inn prices, you'd have better luck booking at a Barbecue joint with an adjoining topless bar and a Holiday Inn across the street.

You'd save yrself a lot of money by getting yr IFR and 250 hrs to do it in the Mooney. Esp over that distance - talk to Bill.

Gratz ForHim !!!

Not sure I would make the event either time, not that I wouldnt want to.....lots of work travel in the near future....but I would probably only attend if the 332nd Mongrels had a showing.  That looks like a June vote for me.

Dallas is just a hop-skip-& a jump for me by auto. I would attend if I have the time;no date preference. If it is in the fall I may be gone working hurricane relief as this is where the lions share of my yearly income rests. On the other hand if one hits Texas I'll still be close.

June is good, as I'm jonesing for a Con (I had to miss it last time :( ).  But whatever works out is cool with me, just so long as you have one.

I'd prefer it to be at that hotel up there next to Grapevine Mills mall again.  That's an excellent venue, because you get free eggs-to-order breakfast with the room, there's a microbrewery next door that sells excellent ale by the gallon for reasonable prices, and then you can go to the Bass Pro Shop and livefire your guns :).

Child friendly? Well, not really for someone so young. You will be watching her all the time unless you are the kind of parent that lets em run loose. I plan on taking my son if it is June. He is 10 and will have a ball. A squadie of mine that took his son in 2002 had a lot of fun also. They both will also attend and I expect them both to have a blast together. :)

Thx Daddog.  Either my wife or I would be watching her, she's not allowed to run loose or disturb others.  I'll discuss it with my wife more, but it is reassuring to know others take their kids also.

On that family friendly question....

Seems like when people talk about the con, the main variable is the degree of inebriation. I know some of thats just kidding around, but were not talking about an animal house lite here, are we?

Also -- Besides the obvious coolness of meeting people IRL and hanging out with those who share your unique addiction, what exactly happens at the con?

I've been to 3 of em and can't recall a single thing. Just Kidding :rofl

A lot of folks arrive Thursday afternoon for equipment set-up, a few laughs over Happy Hour and settle in to flying.

Friday usually involves a guest speaker or two. Sadly, there's not many alive or able to get around. HT & Pyro sometimes do a Q&A over development, etc. Friday evening normally involves a 2v2 KOTH.

Saturday morning usually means a trip over to the Cavanaugh Flight Museum for some up-close WW2 viewing. HT holds court during the banquet and prize(s) hand-outs and then it's on to the real fun...muahahahaha.

can you say "flying pt boats"?

Lambo31, Simaril did bring up a point. There is a lot of drinking going on but 90% of the time is very relaxed and friendly. Personally I rarely drink (never in excess any more, used to be a brawler) but those who attend are just out to have a good time with some friends. The language can be colorful but the atmosphere is lighthearted and fun. Some of the guys have… risqué pictures on their desktops. ;) My son and I will have a chat about all the above and more before we attend. If he is going to be exposed to “adult” material I would rather he be with me then experimenting with his buddies behind the garage.

Simaril meeting your fellow AH pilots by itself is worth going to the con. It will give you a whole new perspective on the game and the community. In 2002 HTC had a Q & A session that lasted about 2 hours. Was great to be able to ask Hitech and Pyro questions directly about AH and their plans. Sour who runs the ladder hosted a 2 vs 2 duel and my guess he will again. They usually have a nice dinner and then the Saturday night evil con mission is always a blast. :) DMax covered it nicely too. :)

Thanks for the answers! Sounds really good, but it brings up another question.

Since a lot of the fun happens in front of a computer, what do guys do who are out of driving range? I cant really imagine taking a desktop rig on  commercial flight...

What I've seen done before is a Con organizer arranges with a local supplier to have monitor rentals available, then you just bring your own box. I've done that as carry-on.

As to date, if June I can likely attend and would like to do so. October drops the likelihood a little, although not to "impossible".

what was said about the moniter rental is usually the case, also, it usually can eb set up to ship the tower to the hotel, and ship it home.

personally i drove (from wisconsin) just because a plane ticket, shipping, and all expenses were abotu equal. also i dont trust shipping my baby lol

Best option is an XPC sized rig you can CARRY ON WITH YOU.

Next best option is to FEDEX/UPS it to the hotel to arrive near the time you do.  You should let the concierge know ahead of time of course.  Then you can either make arrangements for the concierge to FEDEX/UPS it back for you on Black Monday (prepaid UPS works well) or stay till Monday AM and do it yourself.

You can of course purchase an inexpensive system (like emachine) in Dallas and just bring extra ram and a good vid card with you....then ship it back since youll have a pretty good packaging(Id recoment turning it inside out).

Least favorable option is to let the airline touch it in any way.  They specifically exclude computers from their liability, and since American is one of the main airlines going to DFW, and in the past 12 months they have lost at least one peice of luggage from over 10% of travelers (worst in the industry)         just not a good thing.

Last time shipping cost me about $70 roud trip....slow round trip

I have been to the last two ... didn't bring a computer and don't ever think I will bring one.

I go to put faces to people, drink, bullchit and generally socialize. Had a blast both times.

Who's ur buddy??  :lol

Agree with Slap on this....faces w/names.... lots of BS and tasty adult bevs.  Since I live in Dallas, I'll have my puter there... all are welcome to jump on and fly it if they wish.  Just bring your stick and maybe a usb flash card for your settings.

Title: Fall Might Be Better Now
Post by: Bullethead on March 06, 2006, 06:57:14 PM
Just found out a required refresher class on the subjects of roadside brain surgery, scraping pieces of people off fenders, and other such things important to my job as a fireman, will be in June sometime, but the dates ain't set yet.  If the Con and the class conflict, I'll have to go to class to keep my job.  Thus at present, with neither Con nor class dates certain, a fall date might be better for me.
