One of the greatest tactical warfare problems has always been finding the enemy and accurately pointing him out to the shooters. Since Desert Storm when it really became clear how properly applied technology is a MASSIVE force multiplier, we've come a long way towards solving this particular tactical problem with some fairly simple to use tools like the IR pointer shown in that video.

That video could be straight from a Terminator movie, but that's how we do things nowadays. And it's not just a random application of cool tools... Everything we do nowadays is undertaken from a joint perspective, emphasizing all services working together to create "effects" without really caring what particular tool is used to create that effect. Tube artillery or a B-52 with JDAM, it doesn't really matter because the Army commanders are trained to use every asset at their disposal to create the effect required, and the same goes at all levels of warfare from the platoon to the theater HQ and strategic planners.

Post by: eagl on February 22, 2006, 08:47:42 PM: The name of the clip is "uh60mosul" and it looked like the fire mostly came from one or two specific directions, but I'm not current enough to tell what was doing the shooting. Didn't look like typical AC130 work though.

Post by: Suave on February 22, 2006, 08:55:34 PM: It's two ah60 or mh60 DAPs. They fire miniguns, then 30mm, then two rockets on each run. You can hear and see the blackhawks.

If those dudes were that close to an ac130 target they wouldn't be standing up and commentating lol.

Yup....they seemed awfully "danger close" if that was from a gunship.

I'm assuming that IR pointer wouldn't be visable to the naked eye...correct? Somthing like that would seem to work BOTH WAYS like tracer rounds.

Don't you remember the video from the Predator over Afghanistan. AC-130 was engaging individual personnel.

Looked like the guys in this video were using a lot of "don't shoot me" stuff also. Still not going to be standing up joe cool 200m from artillery impacting.
