Title: frame Rate....max 30
Post by: ridley1 on February 25, 2006, 10:55:04 AM
I'm on wireless broadband
Have a p4 at 3 gHz, 512 meg ram
with an integrated intel 82915 graphics driver

I've never been above 26 fps.  what can I do to improve?

Or is it just that intel should stay out of video boards?

It's a laptop, right? Then you have a problem, because you can't buy a new video card...  I think only a new card could improve your fps.

If you on a Laptop your stuck :/

but if not then
definantly the video card. atleast a AIT 9800 pro  or Geforce 6600.
128 meg  atleast 256 meg of ram on video card would be best.

if you using onbaord sound also, it can kill your fps also. so id get a
add in sound card. Audigy 2, audigy 4, or the new X-Fi.

Make sure before you buy any Video card  that you know if there is an agp or pci-e slot on the main board . *SOME* prebuilt pc's with integrated video do not put either  on the board .

also, consider adding more ram.

512 is just barely enough.

FYI you can swap out vid cards in laptops. I've done it on a dell that I had.

question for you Morph.

I have a laptop with a sis650 graphics controller. (Don't think its an actual card, I know nothing about laptops).  AHII barely runs on it, but it will run.

Is it possible to upgrade the video on something like that? IE is it possible to install a card and disable the sis controller?

Just wondering..I'm on the road alot.

cheers,
RTR

My wife is the one that bought the PC....(bless her heart;" it has an LCD monitor!   What's RAM?")
One of those TV deals.

So, for another 6months I can either crack the tape, upgrade myself and void the warranty.......or take it to the shop and pay through the nose.

what kind of processor do you have.

I have an nvidia 6600 graphics card, 1gig of ram, audigy 5.1 surround system, 19in LCD 8ms refresh at 81-75htz and still hard to get good fps...

It's my celeron P4 processor at 3.0ghz.... The celeron is not good with games at all and causes choppyness in a lot of my games. That could be the problem,

What is the speed of your North bridge what the speed of your RAM, there could be so many things causing this.

Ridley,

A video card change is not that hard.  It is  handy to have another PC to access the internet for help.

First, before breaking the seal and opening the case, see if you have a manual that will tell how many expansion slots you have,  and the type of slot (PCI, AGP, PCI-E).  Most PCs with on-board video will only have PCI expansion slots.  You can get a video card for PCI, but they are a little harder to find.  PCI and PCI-E are different.

If your interested in learning to build PCs, the best way to start is to upgrade an existing sysem.  Good luck.

I have a P4 3 GHz.

My Ram speed...sorry can't tell ya.

"North Bridge"?...... Say what?

this is a tv machine for dummies...It doesn't even tell me how to get into the BIOS so I can have a look at all the important stuff. (what is it on XP anyway?  F10 on boot up?)

I've upgraded other machines...that's not a problem, but like I've said earlier....I'm only a pseudo geek.

What i'm saying is, it's probably not your graphics adapter. It most likely your speed on the mobo or the chip you have, That's my problem right now.

Depending on TV deals. What brand PC is it?

I had an HP before and I couldn't even upgrade the graphics card to a nvidia 5200 256mb graphics card cuase the power supply didn't support enough power for it, then I couldn't upgrade the power supply cause the case was too small and the DVD drive was too big, then I couldn't get a new case cause of some retarded crap.

If you have the budget, sell this computer and get a built clone PC or build your own.

Video card.  The Intel onboard video will barely play AH if at all.  Most wont.

While Jethro has a point that Celeron's stink for any kind of gaming, if it says its a P4 then most likely its a P4.

I think nowdays most generic computers use Delete key to get into BIOS.  I think Dell is F1.  Not sure about others.

Jethro.....it's an MDG....

so the ability to upgrade is there...that much I know about.

But this Intel integrated garbage is just that.....

I got Call of Duty 2 for Xmas....it won't run it.....
I got Codename Panzers from my daughter....cant' run it.

Besides....wife ack will become deadly accurate if I try anything that'll void warrenty.

Anybody else out there with an MDG system?  How do I get into the BIOS?

To be honest with you, i'm not sure. I did alot of reading one night on the web about guys who were swapping out cards on their Dell laptops. Mine was an 8100 inspiron. I hated and still do hate Dell, and their laptops, basicly everything they sell. But I found a good deal on a card for it and decided to try it... Just for the sake of seeing if I could do it and if it would make a difference on some games I was playing on it.

With some laptops, you are able to swap cards... Others, dont have cards to swap.

Well if you order the graphics card from the people your bought the puter from and either have them install or in some cases they let you install. You won't void the warrenty. Give them a hoot and see how to do this.

Here is my view on this and some wife ack defence:

How much is the warranty worth if you can't play any games on it?

I have seen peple send their PC in for warranty for 2 weeks to replace a $30 part that would have taken 10 minutes to replace with the PC in place without removing a cable.

If it ran for 6 months with no problems, it will run another 6 months.

If you can afford to spend an additional 50%+ markup , labor and cost of shipping etc... to have it installed, I wouldn't be worrying about warranty :)

Good Luck!

Gunner
