You can get dentists in places other than Texas...even England.
Iced Tea...you are giving Texas credit for a drink (Tea) that England brought to the world? You don't even drink it properly. Bunch of heathens drinking tea cold.
Football? That is a British game that Americans stole the name from.
Mexican Food? Credit should go to Mexico for that methinks. Sure you can get it in Texas, but they have Taco Bell in the UK by now don't they?
Oktoberfest? Lol...if you live in England you can take a quick flight to Germany, where the whole thing started.
Kinky Friedman running for Governor. Dunno who that is.
Piņatas at kids' birthday parties...my son turned 5 on the 22nd. We had a pinata for the kids to bash. Hardly something that Texas has exclusive access to.
Boots N Spurs...mmmm play "Cowboy" with those on? Brokeback style?
Rodeos....okay, this is ONE that you cannot actually find in England. Never been to one, have no desire to go either. Lots of Boots N Spurs though I imagine...see above.
Mesquite. I use Mesquite alot when I BBQ, in Bermuda. I cannot imagine you can't find it in England.
-
Rattlesnakes....many of them in England? :)
-
I'd like an even better thread than this, in which people were allowed to post only if they'd been to both England and Texas.
-
That would be fine if we were just having a tourist thread. Best places to eat... things not to miss when in... etc.

Got to be better than the way this one's going to end up, Lazs.
FiltH - no rattlesnakes - LOL - the only poisonous snake in Britain is the viper also known as an adder. I've never seen one, not even a dead one. Only snake I've ever seen in the wild here was a dead grass snake.

Why the thread about two sub-par areas of our globe to live in? Why not something like "Bermuda or Bahamas" ? :)
FWIW, I'd take England, based on weather alone. I'd rather dress up for the weather than have to go from air conditioned building to air conditioned building to survive the Texas summer atrocious heat.

Unexpected reply from you man. ;)
I've only been to Bahamas once. Didn't like it.
Bermuda is better.

Beetle, I've been twice 1982 and 1997. I'm still livin in Texas. England is a nice place to visit but i wouldnt want to live there. First trip i was TDY to RAF Little Rissington near Burton-on-the-Water, believe it was in the Cotswolds. Nice small town. We went from San Antonio to Fairford. First thing I noticed was the countryside looked very similar to the countryside around Austin (back in 1975) when it was mostly farm and ranch land. It was in September so it was pretty damp and cool but overall not to bad. We helped inventory and setup a USAF Contingency Hospital there. I took time out from my TDY to visit my brother that was stationed at Greenham Common and lived in Newberry. My brother married a brit lass. I thought their little kitchens with the small stoves and small cabinets was cute. We stayed about 3 weeks or so. We got to go into Burton a few times while we were there and saw some of the local sites like the model village (very cool, especially the model within the model) and spent some time at the pubs. some of us had time to see Warwick Castle and Blenheim Palace.
Second visit 1996 was to see my brother again that was stationed in England (his second tour) at RAF Croughton. I was stationed at Ramtein AB in Germany, ( 4 years) I drove, it took about 10 hours (including the ferry) to get from Ramstein to Croughton. We spent a few days there and made trips to London and side trips to one of Shakespear's houses and Ann Hathaway.
Anyway England was nice but Germany was better;) Going to England is like visiting your grandmother's house and staying in the front parlor where everything is covered in plastic and your not allowed to touch anything. Germany is like a party almost every weekend, them germans have a fest for everything, spring, winter, fall, and summer. Time to slaughter the (insert your farm animal of choice) time for a fest. "Hey look, the sun came out, lets have a fest!" I got to go to Munich for oktoberfest 3 times while i was in germany and I miss them they were a lot of fun, but I still dont want to live in Germany. However when I retire or at least when all the kids move out I would like to take a month off and go back once and awhile, but i'll still live in Texas cause there's no place better.

Would you believe it - I was in Bourton-on-the-Water last weekend! Yes, Germany is good - you forgot to mention the cars! I must get over to Germany to visit Nexx sometime soon. Anyway, you have been here, so I take your comments on board. Sounds like you've had some interesting trips. :aok Yes the small kitchen cabinets was one of the things I noticed when I moved back here. :lol

This guy I've got staying with me, who finally made it from Miami ;) is en route to where he works in the Middle East. He's been eating all the sausages, bacon, pork pies and anything else with pig in it that he can lay his hands on!

I can have a drink downtown and be in the ocean in about 15 seconds. In fact many drunken tourists have done just that.

Hell, I'd already choose England over Texas, but the bacon part really does seal the deal. I'm guessing they're lacking on good BBQ joints though.

Good lad! I dated a USAF nurse based there for a while.
Anyway, to the point.
England has fallen.
England has been under seige by foreign invaders for many years and now they've over run it. Consider England a barbarian country and it's populace hostile. Thank Christ for Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Cornwall (which, trust me, is a different country to England) cos they're existance is all that makes Britain Great (with the exception of the Cornish who merely exist). England sucks.
However, anyone that says Britain sucks will be picking up their teeth, capish?

I've been to Texas enough times to know I don't wanna live there. That'd be four or five...'course that's all in Dallas or Houston, and I've heard Austin is nice. Still, probably to friggin' hot though. Never been to jolly ole England. But I like rain, I prefer to be close to the coast, and I prefer weatherbeaten beaches to sunny ones.

this is not fair, Texas is a state that is bigger than many countries, England is a country that is smaller than many states.

Didn't spend much time in the UK and didn't want to. It rained and every building was drafty and moldy. Oh, and I'll never forget the look of contempt on the teller's face at the exchange when in my ignorance I asked her if she had any one-pound notes.
I can see a connection between the chill in the English air and the chill in "English airs", but which feeds from the other is a mystery to me. Was it dreary outside when you made the observation above?
In contrast, I'm moving back to TX as soon as I'm able. Next time, I'm staying. It's the only place on Earth I've been to that I'm looking forward to living in.
Don't get me wrong, Beetle. I'm happy that you're happy where you are.

Well VOR, at least you've been here, so your opinion counts, unlike some who know jack all about the UK, never having been here. Yes it does rain sometimes - it's not raining today and the sun's out.
I've had experiences similar to your banking experience. I asked a bank in the US if they could supply me with some pounds sterling, sterling being the proper name for the UK currency, for a trip home I was about to make. And the lady said "I'm sorry sir - we don't deal in precious metals" :lol
The other time was when I went to the US Post Office - the one near Cicero & Addsison in Chicago - to send an important letter to England. The US postal worker had not heard of the "United Kingdom" and thought it was in Russia!
this is not fair, Texas is a state that is bigger than many countries, England is a country that is smaller than many states. - john9001
It's a dubious comparison at best. Some people seem to think that size and size alone = diversity, which is of course bollocks.
Someone posted in the other thread that there was a distance of 900 miles between the Texas towns of El Paso and Beaumont, as if I was supposed to be impressed. I later made my own checks, and determined that the great circle distance was in fact ~738 miles. So I guess Britain has something Texas doesn't have - Roman roads - nice and straight!
The furthest you can travel in mainland Britain is 874 miles, between Land's End and John O'Groats. I assume this is a great circle distance, in which case the road distance would be ~1000 miles, but I can't be arsed to check. (A straight line would involve a water crossing) No bikini girl pics, but I took this one at Land's End last year. LE is in Cornwall - Swoop's favourite county! It's only adjoining county is Devonshire, to the east. ( ;) at Mr. T)
Of course, Land's End is in England whereas John O'Groats is in Scotland, and some people might point out that this journey involves two countries - LOL! But wait, they're both part of the UK - since 1707 - but I know some guys on this board like to use information that's hundreds of years out of date. :D
Airscrew! - sorry about the prolonged period of toodle-pippage. I have a friend staying with me this week. He's on his way "home" to Qatar in the Middle East, and has been consuming two things in prodigious quantities while he still can - pork products and alcohol! So we had an evening out at this 14th century pub, about 3 miles from my house, where we sampled various local beers and had dinner - pork escalope! For as often as I come here, I really ought to have an account with that taxi firm...
Places like this ^ were amongst the things that I missed during my three years in the US. Old pubs like this one, and of course the "real ales" available within. In my travels around America, I never found anything like this of course. Although this place is 14th century, it's only been a pub in recent years - since c1700 - and I don't mean 5pm. LOL
To be fair, I should add that beer in the US has improved, with great strides having been made in the last ~20 years. There are a few excellent microbrewery pubs in Denver near Coors Field, and another good one I know in New York - the West Side Brewing company at 76th & Amsterdam - plus a great many in between I have no doubt. Don't know about Texas though.
-
One thing i love about England is it's nice soft grass- i'm not kidding.:)
If i don't move abroad i think i'll probably settle back in Devon After uni. I miss the sun and the coast lots up here in leeds.
Yay for devon

It wasn't posted to impress you ya dweeb :) I am impressed by your ability to circle jerk an argument to prove a point nobody cares about though. Really, everybody travels from point A to point B in a straight line

I don't drink... if I never see the inside of a smoky, drafty, creaky old pub again it will be no big loss... if I never drive on a back road that is not wide enough for one car much less two... I won't mind.
Beet... the difference between your experiance with salespeople/bankers and VOR's is that you weren't the victim of rudeness... he was. Not knowing that pounds sterling was just more overblown paper was no big deal but being rude is IMO.
having said that... people in england were very friendly to me... the women were very nice. Most of you here would laugh about how ignorant they were about the U.S. tho... even the ones who claimed to have been "there". The accents were really horrible too... but then... new york or boston or main accents with their donkey like braying are more annoying.
The only roads in england that I seen that were straight were a couple of narrow, rain soaked freeways with intermittent traffic jams on em. Every other road looked like it was not only inspired and built by romans but.... was last maintained by em. If one chariot could fit on it then it was plenty wide enough.
I am giving Texas serious thought for retirement. I can't imagine anyone giving england serious thought to live in if they had the choice.
You will find limeys in Texas.... ex brit citizens... pretty sure you won't find many Americans in england who gave up their citizenship to be british tho.

I don't think it's a "Texas thing" persay but something not very well known is that Texas has a bunch of "germantowns" Basically towns settled by Germans long ago that kept alot of their cultural identity.
Two that I can think of off the top of my head is Muenster, wich is just west of Sherman, TX and New Braunfels. Both of these towns put on a helleva good Oktoberfest.

I want to visit the England from those James Herriot novels. With the country vets and the dogs under the pub stools and the crochety old farmers with the stone fences and the whiskey and scones for desert England.... that would be cool.

I was never really overwhelmed by the scones themselves. However, when you slather them with the clotted cream, they improve considerably.
Still... it is really nice the way dogs are integrated into daily life. They let my lab pup ride on the train with me to the airport. She just sat (or slept) on the floor by my seat. Everyone took it as quite normal, stopping to talk to her and pet her.
I think Amtrak would freak if I tried that.

Flying to India in December I was bumped up to First Class....which was really sweet. About 15 minutes into the flight I was offered a scone with clotted cream and jam. I nixed the jam but slathered on the clotted cream. OH BLISS..all the malanky hairs on my plot stood up endways. ;)
I ended up ring-dinging that call bell every few minutes until I ran the plane out of scones.:aok

LOL Lazs! That describes last night's pub perfectly! :D However it did have a log fire burning - all the good pubs do. But take heart - Tony Blair is clutching his ban stick again, and smoking in public places including pubs will be banned in 2007.
Krusher ;)
Thrila - is that Salcombe area?
MT - "I want to visit the England from those James Herriot novels. It just so happens I'll be doing exactly that next month! Here's a pic of the Dales I took in '99 (crappy old camera - sorry) showing those "fences" - they're actually called dry stone walls. :)

Staying at this very cottage. In the Dales, there are no brick houses. All the houses are built from stone like this one. We stayed here in '99 too. The walls of this cottage are 4ft thick. The weather was cloudy all week :(

It is gorgeousness and gorgeosity.
It is a thick, slightly sweet cream. Thicker than whipped cream.

You're first impression when looking at it is that it is something a tuberular cat hacked up.
However, like oysters, you just have to give it a go. It's good stuff.
Typically, as Curval says, it's Scones with Clotted Cream and Jam. Jam is optional, IMO. With Jam is good too, though, especially the "Straaaw-bree" jam.

When I think of German influence, traditions and culture in Texas, I think of the Hill country. Fredricksburg, Johnson City, etc.
Not only is the countryside some of the most beautifull you will see anywhere, the folks in that area are fantastic. If you like German style food, then the Fredricksburg area is the place to go in Texas. Fantastic.
South from there, in the coastal plains area , small towns such as Damon and George West there is a heavy Bohemian influence. I would spend a couple a months a year in that area for a few years. I can say that , without a doubt, I have enver seen folks anywhere so friendly, hospitable and enjoyable to hang out with.
There is really not many cultures and different heritages that you can`t find in Texas. You just have to get off the point A to point B routine.

Personally, if it's German style food I'm after, I'd go to Germany. Kind of obvious place to start... :aok

But in Texas, (much like any other state) you can walk next door to the German restaurant and take your pick of Cantoneze, Sichuan, Hunan, Indian, Mexican, Tex-Mex, BBQ, Sicilian, Creole, Thai, Kosher, 36 oz steak and 2 lbs Idaho russets, Buffalo wings, Cajon, .....

In Germany they ONLY have German food.
-
Holden - Not sure if that would be good or bad! But - in Amsterdam, there's a small area in the main canal district where there's a similarly wide choice of restaurants of different nationalities. Same thing in Antwerp, although that's Belgium. Being able to get there helps...:aok

It doesn`t take much imagination to figure out where you came up with this.

The topic is England v Texas. Your opening post was about German style food. Pot meet kettle!
As for the subject matter of this thread, you're not qualified to take part. How can you have a discussion about half a topic? Read the title again.

You took off on the Germany ride.

Well.....I would say that I am qualified to take part in the thread due to the fact I have lived, traveled and expierenced Texas to a great extent. The Texas part, yaknow.
You on the other hand haven`t got a clue about Texas.
What you do have , as far as this thread topic goes, is knowledge of England.
You could, if you were so inclined, share what you beleive to be some good points about England. The England part yaknow.
Or........you could continue your routine of trying to see how big of a jerkoff you could be. You are also very practiced in that area.
Got any good points dealing with England you would like to put forth?

this post is idiotic.
for a young person seeking a good night life, trendy bars, fast paced life, huge variety of cultures, lots of attractions to visit, fun... London, England.
for people that want to shoot fluffy little animals, like bbq's, people that speak spanish... Texas.
for someone that wants a relaxed life in the country, open fire places, old pubs, nice scenery, history... England.
someone that doesnt want to pay ridiculous amounts of money on gas, likes flying, cars with big engines, open space... Texas.
etc. etc. etc.
Each to their own.

Typically, as Curval says, it's Scones with Clotted Cream and Jam. Jam is optional, IMO. With Jam is good too, though, especially the "Straaaw-bree" jam.

Looks like we are on the topic of food. I dont care what BBq joint you have ever been too but coopers is by far the best in the country. People drive from other states just to have so of their brisket. Every day this place is packed with people making day trip in the hill country. Also their a great TexMex place across the street. Its great in hunting season because evryone has camo on and you know their having the time of their life with their family.

BTW that pit is what you order from. Just walk up take a look and pick out a piece of meat. Most time they have 2 pits like that to order from but in hunting season sometimes they will open up 4.

- Like I said - half a thread topic. You on the other hand haven`t got a clue about Texas.
My knowledge of TX may be small, but is infinitely greater than your knowledge of England. I say infinite because if you've studied math(s), you'll know that infinity is the result when you divide something by zero, no matter how small that something is. As HmcG is here, I should further qualify that by saying that the "something" needs to be a positive value, else he'll have me! Got any good points dealing with England you would like to put forth?
Well everyone else seems to be enjoying this thread. Sorry if you're not one of them. I've posted a few pics of places in England - why don't you post some pics of Texas where you live?

want to visit the England from those James Herriot novels. With the country vets and the dogs under the pub stools and the crochety old farmers with the stone fences and the whiskey and scones for desert England.... that would be cool.
I live 10 minutes drive from from that sort of terrain.
I was driving over the Pennines yesterday (similar to Herriot country) and was struck by how beautiful it was, as I am everytime I drive through it. Blasting along a particular open country road at 80 mph it was just superb, until I realised it was about -4 deg C outside and I really should brake at alot earlier into the corners.
Scones are more associated with Cornwall and Devon (South Western peninsula of England).
I'm sure Texas is fine, but I'll stick with Yorkshire for the time being. It is god's country afterall - no snakes, spiders, hurricanes, earth quakes. Just amazing scenery, extremely variable, but gentle, weather and decent beer.

Texas has Willie Nelson, Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, great BBQ, Large Breasted women with even larger hair, big cars and bigger ego's,
Great weather and lets not forget Georg Bush:rofl

I love freshly baked scones with loads of clotted cream- jam is optional, clotted cream is essential.:)

I have lived in Texas most of my life. I did live in England from 1980 to 1983. I love both places for different reasons:aok
-
UK:
British pubs
Flyable Spitfires
England:
Nice bitter
Duxford
IWM
Strong mustard
English accent
Little distance to France.
Most virile women in the world. (statistics).
Proper soccer.
Britpop
Wales:
Many sheep make good food.
Many odd places
Good te
Nice pubs in the countryside
Scotland:
Kilts (no chance with cowboy boots)
Bagpipes
Haggis
Castles
Good strong ales
Angus beef
The finest Whisky
Texas
Fat ladies
Rattlesnakes
Fake boobs
Deaths by stray bullets
Stinking feedlots
Funny language (JR Ewing)
Bush
Beaners (male)
Twisters
Caravan parks
My X lives there (or was it an XXXX)
There's more. But good about Texas is HTC and lots of P51's....

Actually I did find a very decent mexican restarurant in Germany. On Kaiserstrass between Vogleweh and Landstul, in Einsiedlerof. I dont know if its still there, last time I ate there was Fall 1998.

Hehe, Beetle, do you live in the UK?
Go there often you see :)

If you ever happen to find yourself in the Amarillo area of Texas and you think you are very, very hungry, you can find out just how hungry you are by going to The Big Texan . 72 ounces of steak with all the trimmings. Eat it and the trimmings within one hour and it`s free. :D

Best single place on the planet that has the best available from all cultures.......Hong Kong.
You simply cannot beat that place for it's amount of outstanding choices of ethnic restaurants, run by ex-pats.
-
How about Manhattan?
-
Angus - yes, ~60km west of London - handy for LHR. As for Manhattan restaurants, there are plenty - all good. Anyone here ever go to Fred's at 83rd & Amsterdam? Excellent steaks (but less than 72oz LOL) I did a great deal of hanging out on the upper west side in the 90s. Many informal restaurants. The east side tended to be for business customers, white linen tablecloths etc.
Jackal - 72oz AND the trimmings? You'd be the size of a house after eating that! Oh wait.... erm... no, I can't say it! :rofl
Stringer - you're just the person to ask - why do some Italian restaurants (by which I mean restaurants that are actually located in the country of Italy) serve the salad after the main course?
-
Many good places to eat in Soho as well, - and of course the London Chinatown.
The best Chinese food I ever had was in Soho....awesome.
-
Beet,
To help with digestion of the meal (or at least that's what they've told me).
My wife and her family serve the salad the same way (after the meal).
I've actually come to prefer that way as well.
Angus,
Manhattan is good no doubt, but I'd still give the nod to Hong Kong.

I was stationed at RAF Upper Heyford. While there I lived in the city of Towciester, Bandbury, and for a while in the little village of Hook Norton.

You cannot compare England to Texas and vice-versa. It is a moot point as to which is best. People like thier comfort zones.
I have been to England, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Denmark, Greenland, and parts of the Carribean. I have enjoyed every place I have been to so far. Every place on this planet has something different to offer and to experience.
I am a Texan. I have lived here all my life and will die here. For me, it is my comfort zone. It has everything I need and want for my lifestyle. But I do enjoy traveling and experiencing other cultures and places.
England is not better than Texas. Texas is not better than England. By the very essence of the two places, they are mutually exclusive, as they are so very different from each other.
It would be ignorant to accept one is better than the other.

No kidding!!! USAF Upper Heyford? I used to fly out of Enstone! Enstone was entirely within the Upper Heyford Mandatory Radio Area (UHMRA), so whatever direction traffic was headed from Enstone, we'd have to request a clearance from you guys on 128.55MHz to transit the UHMRA. Your officers were always very polite, and would always address us as "Sir", even if we were to be flying a lowly Grob 109 motor glider! Oddly enough, I do believe the first time this ever happened, the ATC officer was a Texan! It was the way he pronounced the 55 in 128.55 that gave that away. ;) The USAF F-111s formed the bulk of the movements at Upper Heyford as I recall, but they did not use that frequency, and I assume they used instead a UHF channel. Must have been a while ago, as Upper Heyford has been closed since about 1991.
Skuzzy, I agree with what you said 100%.
-
Beet1e
Yes I heard the base was closed. I was a Crew Chief on F-111E , tail number 68-005. It was assigned to the 55th TFS.
I still hope to go back and visit someday. I'd like to take my wife to see Upper Heyford, and the surrounding area. I'd also love to visit London, and Scotland, again before I get too much older.
If you see Phaser11 in the main arena or AvA . He was stationed at RAF Upper Heyford from 1988, until 1991. He was a crew chief on the EF-111s. They came there long after I left.
If you ever come to Texas, be sure and let me know.
Cheers ya'll.:aok

I find babes with british accent irresistable.
Texan babes also have a cute accent that make them sluttier (which I'm not sure if it's good or bad). On the other hand they might have double names like Dora May or something.
Point to England.
Texas has the lowest ping times to the MA.
Point to Texas.
Conclusion:
If brit babes would put out more, dilema solved.
