Authenic Mexican food is certainly hard to beat whn you are in the mood.
Only thing is , in Mexico to get authenic Mexican food most wouldn`t feel to comfortable in the places you could get it and wouldn`t really want to know what was in it. :)
It`s sort of funny to me that the tourist trap locations in Mexico rarely serve authenic Mexican food. They go with the Tex/Mex version. Certainly not knocking it, because I love it.
To get authenic Mexican food in Mexico you usualy have to take the off beat path. Just don`t drink the water. :)

I like thai food. Yummy.

Food taste is strictly ruled by ones opinion. That said, I love it all except fast food. If I HAVE to do fast food, I'll do Subway when I'm desperate.

Well, its a tough call. Italian is awesome, don't get me wrong.
You've been all over the world String, what about the Far East? I've never been there, so I cannot comment on it (see Jackal...very easy admission to make. ;) )

Curv, that was so good, I'll let you off the cost of a new keyboard! :rofl

Mexican food is great, but I think the quality is improved in the United States.
-
Stringer - as you've obviously been to Italy, what do you think of what America has done to pizza?

Hmmm. To date, the best food/meal I have ever had was breakfast on the farm. I dunno what it was, but it was and is the best dang meal ever created. Homemade biscuits/bread/pancakes, fresh bacon, white gravy, eggs, homemade preserves, hash browns...damn,...I need to go pay a visit this weekend.
Other than that, Italy

:D I got to agree. Been a long time for me. Was nothing like the smell of breakfast cooking. What I remeber best about those times for me was my grandmother would be up and in the kitchen by 5:00 A.M.. Cooking was her thing. First thing that would hit you was the smell of the coffee brewing. Coffee was brewed in a heavy coffee pot on the stove. After that , the smell of the breakfast would reach out and grab ya and drag you to the table like a magnet. great food.
damn,...I need to go pay a visit this weekend.
Skuzz, your family? Where is it located?
-
Near Taft, TX., on the Sinton side. An Uncle and Aunt on Mom's side. I lived and worked the farm every summer and school break I can remember when growing up.
-
Hard to beat the seafood in Italy... however, I'll take a southern meal anyday. I could very happily live on a diet of fried chicken, cornbread (with honey butter), mashed potatos & gravy, and collard greens & rice.... with a side of brisket... thank god I don't gain weight.
-
Beet,
I've done one better, I married an Italian...she is from outside of Naples, so, you see, I have to say that!! hehe. Although, I still think Italian is the best.
As for pizza, I think any pizza shopped owned by an Italian will be the best pizza. When we lived in Boston, there we're plenty of pizza shops. We've got some good friends that are from Greece that own a pizza shop there, but they just don't do pizza as well as Italians, IMHO.
Curv,
I absolutely think Thai food is awesome! That would be my favorite Asian food.
What about Curry, Curv? You thoughts on that. I like curry, but I'll still go with Thai.
-
I like curry, but the stuff I had in India was HOT!!!! If it is too hot I just can't enjoy it.
Best curry I ever had was in England. lol
-
My fave food is Tai..
-
I don't know wich country got the best food I'm only sure to not have tasted all French cheeses and wines at the age of 35 ... and I'm doing my best !
I think we win for the diversity of meal availlable.

You jammy git! Napoli, eh? I like the pizza places where they actually roll out the dough, instead of using stuff in packets.
I like seafood - those places along the Cote d'Azur in France eg. Cannes are excellent but pricey. I like those cabinets they use with shell fish on ice and a load of chopped lemons thrown in. Can't go there without having one of those seafood platters. Italy and Spain are great too.

for me I'd go with Italian and Greek foods as my favourite:)
-
Italian rates a close second.
I say this with a nod to my grandparents from Calabria.
-
The country with the best native food?
Italy. Definitely Italy above all others. Not only is it true, but my ancestors would haunt me were I to say otherwise!
However, I have to say that a traditional American Farm breakfast (and the smell of morning coffee) is simply the best there is. And, there must always be a place of honor for really good barbeque amongst any list of the best foods around...
Great...now I'm starving.
:p

This kind of thread is why I love Cali. We have people from everywhere, and they open restaurants. :)

hmmm tough call for me. but spanish, italian and greek are all in the running for runaway favorites followed closely by creole/caribbean cuisine. I don't like mexican food unless it's home made. I like argentinian food as well as as northern brasilian food.

Going to throw a wrench into this, ready? Japan.
The thing about Italian and Mexican food is that if you throw it in a blender, it all tastes the same. The pasta is a different shape and sometimes the cheese is inside or outside, but the same basic flavor is there. Same for Mexican food.
Japanese food has to have the most variety of flavors and textures. And any so-called Japanese food you get outside Japan is nothing like the real thing. Really! Japanese are obsessed about food and contrary to what you may think, they eat FRICKIN' HUGE amounts of food.
Japanese always seem to adopt the best of other ethnic food, also. The attention to detail is downright pedantic. They'll spend years in another country trying to find the 'best of the best' of another cuisine before they cook it up in Japan. They import only the best ingredients and spices.
I just can't possible put into words the level of obsession. You wouldn't believe me anyway. :)
The only food lacking now is US beef. Since the import ban, all we have is Australian beef, which I don't think comes close to the flavor and tenderness of US beef.

Don`t know why, but I feel like that`s gotta be a good thing. :D

That`s really ironic in a way and also a little comical to me since they made a big push to buy up some of the largest beef operations in the U.S.

If I were to order my favourite meal somewhere, I would order:
ceaser salad
perrier
red wine (from their menu)
prime rib (medium rare)
horse radish
roast potatoes
peas, carrots, onions in butter
creme brule
black coffee
sambuca
Recommendation for anyone who likes prime rib or steak to give 'Ruth's Chris Steakhouse' a try. (Canada & US) Make sure you're hungry when you get there :O

Seven Star Inn (http://www.sevenstarsinn.com/)
This is the finest american dining in all of the US.
I once got the shrimp cocktail as an appetizer. The shrimp were the size of my hand.
-
I love alot of asian food. Some of the fish dishes are outstanding. Not a fan of sushi tho.
-
Rolex, I agree with you , but the food you get localy is different from the one you find in a regular japanese restaurant abroad (only exception i found was a tiny restaurant in Oxford that made home made food... including nato (yuk!!!)).
Best thing I can remember are "onigiri"(sp?) for lunch... and then there was this cold nooodle shop in Ikebukuro... mhhh  :cry

I vote for the country that gave us chop suey and fortune cookies.

Nothing beats a good German restaurant. Best one I went to around these parts was years ago in Columbus, GA. Called Emmy's Schnitzel House. Saurbraten and potato dumplings were great, along with german beer. That was a fancy place that really "put on the dog" when the German club went there. Very good food and atmosphere.
Doesn't seem to be any German restaurants like that anymore near here. Emmy's went out of business some years ago.
I've not been to Germany, but have been to Spain and the food is good there, especially the paella for me. One thing I became instantly addicted to was ice cream and espresso coffee mixed in a glass and called a "blanco y negro." When I stayed at the University of Madrid dorms back in 76, the cafeteria had table waiters that brought up to 4 bottles of red wine on request. We talked them into a fifth bottle one time, and that's how I know, because the alloted limit was four. This was served with bottles of "Seven Up" to make a popular dinner and lunch drink. Every meal was like that and came out to about one bottle of wine per diner. I had a good time. When they figured out we were enjoying the wine a bit too much, they slowed it down somewhat. Didn't matter, the dorm had a bar next to the student lounge and swimming pool. We made friends with the bartender, because I don't think they were supposed to serve students there.
:D

And Franco was still dead. :)
Paella is great and you gotta love a good tapas. I just got back from Granada saturday. Man I love the country and it's cuisine, it's also nice to come back from the clubs when the breakfast is served.

I stayed a week in Granada. Visited the Alhambra. That is a serious castle of Moorish design. Beautiful gardens there. Was on my own pretty much while there, but it was safe to walk the streets just about anywhere late at night. Would go out and walk the alleys along the castle wall just to see how it looked at night. Was a very beautiful place at night. Granada seemed lost in time. It's probably more modern nowadays, but I'm glad I got the chance to see that and do that.
Did spend a couple days in Paris on the way back home. That was fun too. Never got to go to the top of the Eiffle Tower though. Was in line, but had to go to the bathroom and eventually made it back to the hotel room after changing two subways and walking three blocks. There were no bathrooms near the tower and I had to travel three miles. Did not crap my pants. I couldn't do that nowadays.
I had gotten sick on the train from Madrid to Granada from sitting between cars breathing diesel exhaust. Traveled economy and the seats were uncomfortable and temp was almost freezing inside the cars. Didn't have a coat and was unprepared for cold. Food had nothing to do with it though. Spent the whole week with the runs, returning to Madrid after three days. That was miserable. Stayed in a hotel room for two days and almost went to a doctor, but I survived and was ok by the time the group met up for the trip home.

The Alhambra was amazing. Also the "old town"(Albaicin) was great with it's small alleys, which were full of dog chit.

The best food in the world comes off my grill/smoker out on the porch... geographic location doesn't matter :)
