Title: What a weekend - FDB BBS is back up
Post by: Mini D on March 01, 2006, 03:59:45 PM
Now onto the truck.

I had my whole day scheduled on Saturday. I was going to drive down to Salem to check out a 49 chevy pickup bed that someone was selling and then pop in and watch FattiKop on the big screen. My wife informed me that she had a quilting class from 9-1 (because 47 books on the subject just isn't quite enough) and would need the car. No problem... I'll take the truck.

The trusty 71 let me down. It's not getting fuel into the carb. I had to wait until my wife got home at 1 and then started the parts run. Fortunately, a new carb and fuel pump cost about the same as having the fuel filter replaced on most new cars so I wasn't hurt too hard. But the day was shot.

Sunday, I decided to work on the truck as soon as I installed a MS hotfix that I'd been putting off for a bit. The download and install went fine, but the computer didn't automatically restart. I've had a problem with this box that the "shutdown" and "restart" from the OS don't seem to communicate with the box and vice versa. I decided to do a hard shutdown. Imagine my suprise when it was stuck in a reboot loop because the boot sector was trashed. I spent the rest of the day Sunday trying to recover the HD and the server to no avail.

At least I work with a bunch of geeks and they were completely understanding when I explained that I had a sick computer at home and would need to take some time off. 2 HDs and 3 days later, I have it back up and running. I am amazed at some of the recovery programs from MS and MySQL that helped immensely with this.

Anyways... the FDB BBS (http://www.fatdrunkbastards.com/forums/index.php) is back up.

I thought it was mandatory not to do backups of any kinds in the squad! Good to know SOB didn't lie to me.

The boot sectors by M$ are incredibly retarded: if you restore a backup on another HDD with a different geometry than the original, it won't boot. Can you tell me what kind of modern OS needs to have the HDD's geometry hard-coded into the boot sector??

I was facing the same problem at work and I banged my head against the wall during weeks...

... until I found the solution (as simple as stupid was the cause): fault tolerant boot floppy disk (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=113977).

Well... it was the fuel pump. The spring had come out and loged itself behind the pump arm. The PGV valve had also gone bad and allowed some oil up into the carburator. A new carb, pgv valve and fuel pump and the thing is firing like never before.

Unfortunately, there's a vacuum leak (what sounds like a vacuum leak). It seems to be coming from the distributor. Of course, it could just be the distributor screaming.

WOOOHOOO. fixed the vacuum 'leak'. It's amazing that a leak would develop where you forgot to insert the plug for the vacuum port.

Sorry - couldn't let this go without commenting - quilting and sewing to gals are just like computers and cars for guys - never enough books or fabric and always something new to learn - my man shudders everytime he looks in my closet - all the tubs of fabric, books and patterns, and "tackle boxes" of the tools of my trade - so I keep the door shut when he's around.  But when he sees the checks I get from my "sewing jobs" - well, let's just say he doesn't complain. ;)

I have an assembly manual and a service manual for my chevelle. Anything else would be fluff.

You could get a bunch of dirty magazines and stack them in between the manuals though.

Indeed, I bet he even knows to not let the sticky substances on the shop manual to mix with the sticky substance on the dirty mags.... if they do you may end up with strange creatures running around the garage.
