If you study the ENY numbers on the plane list, alot of thought went into them. I dont know how they set them, but they do seem to be a pretty good gauge.
There are a couple that seems to be charged to much, while some not enough, but for the mostpart its pretty good. The way I see it,
0-10 These planes you should be getting alot of kills and rtb regularly.
11-20 Still alot of kills and unless you really screw up, you should rtb regularly as well.
21-31 high-mid range planes. Kills come harder and/or its harder to escape the fights to rtb.
32-42 Something is now making it definately harder to either get kills...vis, guns, or lack thereof, and harder to rtb, such as a slow plane.
43-53 Face it..the plane you are in is definately outclassed by most MA opponents. Any kill is a gift, and rtb is a luxury.
54-60 You really like a challenge. Just getting to the area of combat is a challenge in patience. Once in combat, other planes dance around you with ease. You either have weak guns, weak engine, weak performance, or a mix of all of this.
I normally fly in the 40 range, either the P40E or FM2 lately. Sometimes I' ll grab a fast plane.
What ENY level do you normally fly in?

I'm still enough of a newb that I need to be conservative if I want to land kills, so I fly the pony lately.
I prefer the 20-40 range when non- horde situations allow. In a furball or base defense, I like the FM2. For pork interception, its the La5 or 7.

Good gauge Filth, but I'll never fathom why 190a5 has a 35 tag - 20ish imho.
Also how is ENY calculated? Plane performance obviously but does popularity affect it? Who works it out?

Whiskey that is one of the planes that I thought was rated with too high of a number.The A5 is better than a 35 in my opinion. But then again the FM2 is better than a 40 I think. The HurriIIc is rated 35 as well, and I think it could slide in at a 28. The 110c is at 55, and seems with its speed it should be a tad lower as well.
The 109s seem good...they are a bear to see out of, as well as shoot until you get the hang of it.
I think alot of it depends on how each player fights when they meet. If you have a guy who always stays fast, never engages unless he has alt and speed over the opponent, and flies a low numbered plane like a La7, Nik, or typh, then he will do well. If you have a guy in a higher numbered plane like a FM2 and he can avoid being hit, and take advantage of opportunities, he will do well.
The main factor is how does the guy in the lower ENY (LA7) plane behave when he meets a high ENY plane(FM2). I tend to fly the same way in every plane I fly. When Im in an LA7, and meet an FM2, I very quickly give up my advantage of speed, and settle into a fight that the FM2 excells in. Sometimes I get lucky, most times I lose. Its those times that having a low eny plane doesnt matter. If flown correctly, the lower eny plane should win the fight.
Since most of the ENY list is based on speed and firepower(seems to me anyways) the guy in the better ride should win. If he doesnt, he slid into the realm of the enemy..giving away his advantage somewhere.
Its not so much the guy in the higher eny plane outflew him, its either the guy was caught low and slow, or was over confident and gave the fight away too early, expending E/alt advantage too early and getting caught.
Once A better turning plane goes nose up and gives chase to a better climber, he is giving away his ability to avoid being hit, just as when a faster plane starts turning with a plane that can out turn him, gives his fight away.
Thats when ENY goes out the window, and it becomes a pilots choices that affect the outcome.

Tiffy if I want kills and want to land them.
Yak-T if i want some fun with one shot one kill.
But i usually fly the P38J seems i can understand and handle that one the best.

Recently, I've found the C.205 to be rather uber for its ENY... 500 rounds of cannon and it takes quite a licking and keeps on ticking. Just keep your E though, cause it'll spin like a dredel on Haunakah if it gets too slow.

when i flew i never bothered with what the ENY was unless
A. ENY would only allow planes over XX
B. i was low on perks and wanted to fly a jet
dora ride of choice for years.
pee-51 got into late.
spitoon for laughs.
205 for fun.
202 to look cool when i land kills :aok
any other plane was to learn something, or just variety.

Explain then how the 38J is at 35. Im not complaining as its my main 38. Some may disagree but I think its definately the superior 38. The L as some advantages over the J but not many worth flying. Dont think it should be ranked a 15 ENY as its not that better of a plane to the J.

I prefer the 38J over the 38L also
Its faster and a better turner in a dogfight.
Only reason I even up a 38L anymore is if I am looking for a CV to dive in on.

I always loved being the underdog. Any high end ENY plane is a lot of fun. My personal Favorite would be the Hurri MKI, but I fly it knowing full well I'll never make it home. The KI-61-Clown-Car-Extrordinaire has grown on me of late. Since I'm a little slow, I have a hard time with B&Z planes, and even though I've done this more than once *ashamed to admit*, I hate running from a fight. So until I learn to keep my fast plane fast, I'll prolly always fly low, slow, and in the 30-60's. <

If I remember correct ENY is not only a measurement of 'ubbness' but also takes into account general usage in the MA.

The 38J is used by far more often then the L as well. Just look at kill stats from last tour between the birds.
