Title: What is your choice for vacation spot?
Post by: xrtoronto on March 02, 2006, 12:57:01 PM

I think for me I would choose Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. I have not been there yet, but from all accounts it is one of the worlds most beautiful destinations.

My second choice would be Monument Valley Az/Ut . This goes back to the time when I was growing up and watched all those John Ford 'dusters' that were filmed here!

If $$$ were no problem, where would you like to visit?

Been to Lake Louise alot - great place in any season.

I would love to see Austria (I love the Alps).  But right now, I'd settle for the chance to make a con one of these days!

"Ordinary" vacations suck monkey balls; grab your Amex and go to some strange place.
I'be been thinking about Astrakhan just because it sounds neat. Also I gotta see another F-1 race in near future and also visiting Oktoberfest would be nice.

In no particular order, and take as much time as I want
1.  all the ghost towns in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and California
2.  The entire East coast from Maine down to Florida
3.  The Mediterranean, especially Italy, Greece, and Crete
4.  3 months in Europe, eating and drinking to excess
5.  United Kingdom
6.  Australia
7.  Mars

My favorite places that I've already been are Oahu and the Big Island in Hawaii.

If money was no object my three choices would be:

1) A tour of all the castles I could find starting in Ireland and moving my way southeast across the channel.

2) China.  The forbidden city, great wall and the out of the way country side where there are few to no tourists.

3) Taking a sailing yacht around the south pacific and exploring as many islands as possible.

Toronto (assuming you're from Toronto :) ), have you ever been to Algonquin Provincial Park?  It's like that first picture you posted, but without the jagged mountains and with more rounded glacial mountains.  It's about two hours north of Toronto.

My favorite vacation was going there and spending 5 days canoeing from campsite to campsite with nothing but what you've brought with you.  Incredible place.

Agreed Tarmac.
The above picture is looking north from the cottage over Wolf Lake into the southern boundry of Algonquin Park. Depending on traffic it's about a 2.5 to 3 hour drive from Toronto. This area is incredible. The pic above was taken at about 9:30 am last summer. End of May and the most of June are no time to be up there however...the bugs are, well, relentless
Tarmac, have you seen any wildlife up there? There is some 3,000 bears in the park; wolves, moose, deer, fox etc. If the wind is not blowing, you can hear conversations a mile away. LOL

Toronto,

If you think you'd like Monument Valley, go a few more miles to the NE and visit a second area called Valley of the Gods. It is very similar to Monument Valley except you can guide yourself and don't have to pay. You can also get closer to the formations for better pix as well.

For me, I haven't found a favorite vacation spot yet. I'm still searching as I haven't hit all of the lower 48 much less Alaska. I'm giving it the rest of my retirement for the search.

Toronto, I saw a moose for the first time up there.  I had always figured the things were about horse-sized... boy was I wrong.  They're freaking huge.  I was carrying our canoe down a portage trail and came around a bend in the trail near a small pond.  I spotted it in the pond when I was probably 20 feet away, and watched it get out and walk onto the trail.  I didn't really want to try to get past it carrying a canoe and a 60 pound pack, so I sat down on the side of the trail and watched him go about his business for a good 20 mins.  A very cool experience.

Mexican Beach's, there are tons of them, the dollar goes a long way.
And with a bit of persistance you can get away from the main crowd pretty easily. There are a couple of  islands in the Cancun area that are awesome.
White sand beaches, blue blue clear water, sun, surf and lots of Corona. :)

Black Hills in South Dakota, 7 miles south of deadwood there is a campground hidden away just off the road. Spent a week there some 5 years back. One of the most idyllic settings I've ever seen. Lots to see & do within a 1- 2  hour drive.

But my ussually favorite is a wild river, a good friend and a cannoe. :)
2 or 3 days of just kicking back, floating down a river. Watching the wildlife, the scenery endlessly change in front of me. Quiet nights around a small campfire.
These are things that bring peace to my soul. That make the better part of me sit up and take notice.

2.  Snow Mass Colarado (skiing)

3.  Lillehammer, Norway (skiing) - ever since I watched the Winter Olympics in 1994.  The place looked absolutely amazing.

My wife really wants to go back to 'Nam and take our kids.  I want to go but am afraid of starving.  If the stuff my wife and her mother makes is any indication of the food I can expect to be served over there I think I will.

I suggested we go on a cruise ship...that way I can eat real food. :)

Some great vacations spots up above! ^^

My choice vacation spot is usually the one I've just been on, or the one I'm just planning :)

Most of our vacations in the last 10 years have been focused around camping/watersports/fishing in the Western US. We meet alot of people from all over the U.S. that enjoy what we enjoy. Friendships are made, spirits flow with sunsets and BBQ's in the evening...can you tell I can't wait til summer gets here? :p

Disneyworld 3 times in the last 10 years too (get to see Mom and have some fun with the kids)

I looked into it a couple of years ago.  Costs were astronomical, especially when I add in flights.

When I go skiing I'm too darn tired to even think about partying at night.  Those days are over. :)

My favorite by far is Tahiti and her Islands. More specifically Bora Bora, Huahine in  Society Archipelago and Manihi in the Tuamotus Archipelago. Mahini does not have a central island/volcano. It is just a atol 5-10 km in diameter.

He, he,

I went there in Sep 2004. Hopped 7 islands (Tahiti, Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa, Bora Bora and Manihi) and just loved it.

The islands are pretty small (you can drive around say Moorea in less than an hour), and they are much older that for example Hawaii. As a result they all have atols around them. In other words, a typical tahitian island is a central volcano (or more frequently two) encircled by a ring of tiny sandy islets on a coral reef (motus). The lagoon between the main island and a motus contain a spectacular wild life. You can swim with sharks, rays, and all kinds of fish.

With time the volcanos are sinking under water and all that remains is just an atol. The Tuamotus archipelago contsists of many very old sank volcanos including Rangiroa and Manihi. It and unforgettable experience to be on and islet only a couple a hundred feet in diameter in a muiddle of the Pacific. The atol is a ring of a couple kilometers and it is not continous, it's a chain of islets. You can walk between them as the water is very shallow.

By far best vacation was to New Zealand for 3 weeks!!! Wife and I had a blast!!!!

2nd best was touring Thailand for 3 weeks....toejamet mostly...went to "james bond Island" and the place "the Beach" was filmed at.  We went in sea kayaks for a bit on that one!  Shame the tsunami hit last year....really messed the place up and I feel sorry for the loss of life.

3rd best...4wheeling/camping/trout fishing in the Mts of Colorado...used to get up there once a month...Ouray, Durango, Telluride....great area.

4rth....on the coast of maine with my folks!

5th....anywhere in Japan!  We lived there for 4 years in Okinawa and absolutely loved it....scuba heaven right out the door!

6th...Moab Utah!

Odd that it doesn't play...it works on my QT.  Do you have a recent version?  Otherwise, Media Player Classic (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_players/media_player_classic.cfm) has a QuickTime codec...you can try that.

The Fisherman's Bastion (Halászbástya).

Budapest has been one of my finest vacation targets - had a good hotel just in the centrum, nice surroundings, and enough of history there. And cheap beer. :)

Funny that you're the only one to have mentioned Texas, considering how much it has going for it. ;)

Here's a pic I took in Austin, to whet your appetite.

I don't have any plans for this year, maybe Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France and back home to Blighty again (maybe via Luxembourg Monsieur Saw'sage ;))

Yea, that`s some beautifull country in that area. A little further on south from where the campground is at that you are speaking of, is a beautifull lake nestled in the valley of the Black Hills. (Pactola Dam and Reservoir)

Even further south, where the hills give way to the prairie, you cand find these. awesome!

A couple of pics I took last Aug. Forgive the quality.
