A photograph that doesn't picture them well and showing a cleric desecrating a koran could be seen by the west as hypocritical and thus offensive to muslims everywhere. Of course that's if the wind is blowing northwesterly in mecca. If it's blowing to the south they have a completly different thing to be offended about.

Sunnis more commonly beat their chests (for instance watch a Muslim funeral some time and watch what the women in particular are doing) to express grief. I'm almost 100% certain the mosque in the picture was Shi'ite.
