Title: Skuzzy - any thoughts
Post by: Kev367th on March 08, 2006, 08:16:03 PM
Just seen the preliminary benchies for the 'Conroe'.

Have to say if they hold up (few doubts about there accuracy), and are priced to compete with the AMD 64's, it looks like Intel may have a winner on their hands.

Some of the doubts -
1) Both machines tested were supplied by Intel.
2) The AMD one didn't recognise the FX-60 in the BIOS.
3) Since when do video drivers have to be written for the graphics card to recognise the CPU?

But as I said if they hold up I may be back to Intel after many years when it's released in around 6 months.

I read them.  I'll wait and see, but it is enough FUD most people considering a new computer may want to wait.

ATI and NVidia both optimizethier drivers for the extended instructions of the CPU's.  My bet is ATI added support for the SSE3 instruction set, which would make a bigger difference in the media encoding.  AMD's SSE support has always been a bit weak and easily exploited.
There could also be other extended instructions involved.  ATI and NVidia will eventually take advantage of them.
