Yeah. Looked good on paper...and would probably have performed better if it had been made of paper. Trying to couple four engines to a twin layout caused massive problems and it was not a success. The name, "Grief" (Griffon, I admit) was fitting - several protoypes crashed. Engine fires were a problem which plagued the 177 throughout it's service life.
Like many German bombers (all, really, thanks in part to Ernst Udet's love of dive bombers and all things dive bombing) it had to have a dive bombing capability built in, even though it was obviously designed to be a heavy bomber, suited to level bombing (although I'm sure it would be popular with those who like using Lancs as dive bombers in AH as it could dive at high speed without the wings falling off and was at least designed to used that way, no matter how ill advised). This always required strengthening and weight increase and...performance loss. The OP missed out the climb rate - 853ft (260m)/min; I believe.
I can't be arsed going into more detail but it wasn't a great plane and it would not be right to have a 177 in AH. My opinion, of course. If anyone thinks the 177 was actually a great plane, then go ahead...explain.
