Title: AW3 Nite
Post by: SirLoin on March 11, 2006, 01:00:42 PM
Just a suggestion...

Aces High is top notch..leader of the pack in WW2 flight combat(by a huge margin)..but what if?..

HTC buy up the rights for AW3 ..  Set up an arena(1 nite a month) for all us AW rejects to have some ol' time Big PAC fun!

What u guys think?

Think they would end up having more wanting AW than AH. It'll never happen.

I still have AW3 on disk , and for giggles i ran it a year or so ago .  Its really outdated , i dont think HTC would have anything to worry about . It basically looks like an old atari game lol

alot of the things that made AW good are in AH already, AW3 is just a name, would you just want to use the old graphics? Isnt there a way to host your own AW servers?

I have the AWCD.......lets face it AH is a better sim now....It just dosen't conform to the game that we were used to playing.....Spit factory....countrys A, B and C.......small % HO's... some of the people and squads etc...time to move on boys...someday AH will be obsolete too!

Are you going to fork over the few million EA wants for the rights to AW and the additional few hundred grand it would take to set up the servers and then the addition few hundred grand per month to run and maintain the servers or do you expect HTC to shoulder the burden of the costs which would then force him to increase the subscription price to host an obsolete game for a few that which to live in the past?  AW is dead, let it rest in peace.

ack-ack

I never played AW and am not at all interested in the idea.  This is AH, you don't wanna play it - don't.  Air Warrior is dead .... move on.

I'd suggest if folks are still stuck on AW, find like-minded people and dual each other via IP.
I have AW installed and it's not that exciting anymore :(

One thing I liked about AW3 is the Migs und teh Sabres so Tell  someone at Grapevine to make it so , then again coming from me it would take   the  a whole brewery to get at least the 3d models made :D

Id like to see just a map made...a copy of BIGPAC just for old times sake. I love the planes in here, and its real close to how AW was played. The 2 major differences are the lack of a briefing room, and the maps. Having every base listed as just a number, rather than a name, takes away from the immersion that each map could provide.

BIGPAC had names for their bases...here its just A70, V30 etc. If anything Id like the terrain setup differently, to make bases have real names.

Thats a cool idea, having names instead of numbers is interesting.  There is a large map made by a member of the terrain team.  It is of the entire Pacific theatre.  You may see it in the SEA but it won't be in the MA.

Once upon a time I built a small cabin in the mountains east of Twi (Twilight). On a clear day I could sit on my porch, prop my feet up on the pine rail, drink a beer, and see across to Mog (Moggy).
The view was breath taking.  :)

The AirWarrior I know and love used #s as well, A82 B85 anyone or was it B84, my memory is slipping ahhhhhhh! Anyway the good old VoD, Valley of Dweebs.

Air Warrior is dead and it's a relic of the past but I'd like to see some maps modelled after it as well. Maybe some limited plane sets for the maps too, ETO/PAC. Don't get me wrong, I love being able to fly whatever but I guess it takes a bit away from the hmm whats the word.. dunno, anyway... I flew ETO and it was always fun going to PAC and flying with them some, seeing how the tactics are different etc. I don't mean change it for good but limit it a bit more, some maps pto planeset some eto, some both.

more importantly, when will airwarrior vietnam be released?
Title: AW3 Nite

Easyscor started working on an ETO map, and I've got a copy that needs time spent on finalizing a good many things.

Stalins got going full speed, so I'll get back on that after the Stalins Fourth hump.

It'll be a good map for H2H, if it goes well, I'll think about a AW Old Farts night.

Pipeline is chock full of events at the moment, sqeezing in a couple suprises if things work out well.

I believe "Twi" was for "Twisted"...an early AW ace...

=GB= ( had field or two named after me as well :)  )

Thye big draw to AW for me was the community first, then
the terrain layouts and general gameplay.

Fighting over the "pond" of the early ETO terrains was a real hoot.

I'm afraid the shear numbers present in AH will never allow it to
match AW in terms of community....

What I'm saying is the size of AH is a good thing but it's also a bad thing. It makes 1 base fairly insignificant, I'm not sure how to get around that aspect and  still keep the size of the maps.

Although I like the size and numbers of AH, the fact is it's big which limits the smaller tight-knit community aspect. Also the rolling maps and the sheer size of them limit ones relationship with them. Let me explain a bit more...

In AW I used to love flying around A84 (I believe) and killing Cz and driving my 190 over the pond. I really hated when A84 got taken out because it was like my home base, I felt attached to it, it was mine! Plus capturing bases around the pond was a big thing because they were the only bases you could capture so that made it a big deal. Shooting down the resupply c47 drones felt like it was making an impact...

I agree totally on your assessments above.

I, too, had a "home base" in that ETO map that had A83 over in the east just
north of B85 (I think those are the correct numbers ).

Short flights to lots of action and for those that liked to buff ( I did that ALOT )
the STRAT targets were set up in such a way that you had to run the gauntlet
to get to them.

Fighting in the mountains on the northern and southern ends of "the Pond"
was also a real trip.

When AW "grew" and they instituted larger maps and multiple arenas,
the "glory days" began to ebb, IMO. I never cared much for "Big PAC"
and preferred to fly the ETO maps. Loved the AW A-26 and turning and
burning in the 38 as well....ahhh, the memories :)

Thanks Reacher .

Actually graphics were a little better than what I had envisioned, yes, they don't stand up to today, but I had heard of flying triangles and such. That system text would take up a whole screen or fly by in todays arena of 500 +, but would be quite funny to see.

That was cool, thanks again.

Actually that movie was like 3rd generation stuff. The DOS version was much worse and the planes showed up as Ts in the distance.

Now imagine that screenshot in black&white - not greyscale - dithered black and white. That's what the Mac version was like for a number of years. Oh, and 30 frames per hour too.

Yeah, the old ghost art. As I recall it took a couple iterations to fix that. For a while you could have outlines and their pattern checking wouldn't look to see if the regions were filled or not.

I used to have a custom B17 cockpit file with a skip-bombing sight:

And of course the classic F/A-26B cockpit:

Plus for many of us back then there were also long distance phone charges. $1000/month combined was not that uncommon.

I think I topped out at around $700/month on GEnie.
Back then it was pretty easy to rack up 100 hours a month flying and
with the small arena size you got a heck of a lot more engagements in
for your $$ as well :)

I gave a sigh of relief when CRIS was added and the price dropped to $3/hour:)
