Yup. Huge on newtonian physics. The Freespace 2 mod is decent, but this one was built from the ground zero on up. Hellova feat for an open source project.

Not surprising, as far as I know Babylon 5 is the only sci-fi show to ever get space combat momentum physics right.  At least when it came to fighter craft.

Yes, not as realistic.  Chases just wouldn't happen that often.  You and the enemy spot each other, you fire up your main drive to check any moment you don't want and to accelerate towards the enemy.  Meanwhile he's doing the same.  So you get off a few shots and then the momentum carries you way from each other.  Rinse and repeat, more like knights jousting than anything else.  I suppose it might could get to a point where momentum starts getting less and less, but then you and the enemy are just sitting there blasting away at each other.

I tried the torrent, it didnt work.  I guess I dont have the right software?  Never been a big fan.

I tried the EMULE mirror, it gave me a page not found error.

I tried the .ru one and I never could find the download.  I cant read russian.

I tried the main download site 3 times and got 3 corrupt downloads.  I give up.

Ok so what do I need to download and install to use the torrent?  All it does is download a file to my computer that isnt recognized, and I cant use it.  I even tried running the main download from location, waited an hour only for it to tell me the file is corrupt again.

Use a torrent client like Azureus. Open the torrent file with it and it'll start downloading.

I've been playing the game but haven't managed to get past the fighting tutorial. I suck.

What I'd really like is something along the lines of the old Wing Commander games.  The Star Wars X-Wing and TIE Fighter games were ok.  I havent seen anything since that even remotely matches up.  The WC: Privateer was cool.  I was hoping this game would be similar, still waiting to find out.

The best space based combat game i ever played was independence war.
It had a real grasp of space combat and the physics of it.
Havent played it in awhile might get it out and see if it will run on my new puter with a ati card  in it.
my old puter had a nvidia card and IW would work with it. It was originally desighned for voodoo cards

old reveiw i found http://www.avault.com/pcrl/demo_temp.asp?game=iwar2

Thats what I eventually had to use.  I tried 2 others with no luck.  Downloaded Azureus and tried it, fired off first time and downloaded the setup files.  Thanks for the tip!

Actually guys, one of the VERY first games that came out in CD-ROM had realistic newtonian flight.

MANTIS: EXPERIMENTAL FIGHTER.

Anyone remember that one?

Actually it WASN'T one of the VERY first.

One of the VERY first was Warhead on the Amiga.

AMIGA?

Methinks you're confusing SNAKE BYTE with newtonian flight stuff ;)

Nah, Warhead was newtonian, twas frickin hard, and even had flight 'macros'.

If space combat, slick graphics and newtownian physics are your thing, do yourself a favour and check out the X series, particularly the latest incarnation, X3 : Reunion.

There is a 'story/plot' game, but it is pretty dull.....more than made up for however by the depth and complexity of the rest of the game.

Above link will get you started, screenies, forum, demo etc.

PS  Oh yeah, Starforce protected, for those disturbed by such things.

I played both the demo of X3 and the babylon 5 game, and neither seemed to have true space physics. In X3, the craft only kept going in the same diretion for maybe 3 seconds, and it was soon corrected somehow by the game automatically. Maybe I am missing something  For example, when you roll, it is a "star-wars" roll. The craft rolls at a constant speed and stops when you let go of the joystick. It just seems like they made it so you get a little velocity in the same direction when you sharply change pitch.

I haven't played the bablyon 5 one for  a very long time, but I remember the physics didn't feel right. There was an "inertia mode" IIRC where all that would happen is you would keep traveling in the same direction if you changed pitch or roll, and there was still a lot missing. I haven't played in awhile though.

I am still waiting for an absolute, true space simulator with physics something along the lines of orbiter (http://www.orbitersim.com). All the ones I've seen are kinda headed on the right path but have yet to actually get there. They seemed to be star wars physics meshed with true zero-gravity-zero-friction physics for a half-baked 50% experience.
