Title: PCI express Card
Post by: bandit752 on March 13, 2006, 11:37:01 AM
I have just purchased a new computer emachines W3410 with a AMD 3200
processor, 1-GB memory and a PCI express slot X16

I am looking either at ATI's X700 or 6600GT video cards! Onyl because I can pick up these cards for under $200
I would like input on the video card and which ones.
I only have a ebay budget of $200.00 !!

another question! What is the set-up for a dual display in aces high?

Thanks

I use an x800 (cost right around your budget on NewEgg).

X800GTO (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814131424)

Here is a link to an earlier thread for another good buy (dunno what Saphire is like tho.. mine is a POWERCOLOR):

X850 (http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=172379)

FYI the X800GTO really has 16 pixel pipes.  Dunno why NewEgg advertises 12.  Ever since a while back POWERCOLOR started using a better core (guessing) in the GTO (from what I have gathered) and they come w/ 16 out of the box (at least mine did, and many others).

Bandit, you really want to stay away from the x700.  Consider the x800 series or the 6600 series, depending on which manufacturer you prefer.  The x700 will not satisfy you.

That said, my 6800GT was right at 200 bucks on newegg.  You just have to dig for specials.  Dont settle if you can get better.

X800 here, was 170 $ at either Mwave.com or Newegg.

No idea on dual display, havn't got room for another monitor here.

I have 3 computers, a printer, scanner, routers, 2 joysticks, couple of fans, and the wifes bill basket all in less than 12 feet of countertop.

Thank you for the Input on the x800 or the 6600 GT series!
Yes, I have a PCI express X16 slot,,
I planned on using the dual displays! I understand that each of the cards
you are describing, need power and have a min. on the power supply requirements!! Some cards need a power supply of 450-500w Min!!

But you have narrowed the many possible cards for me to get!!!
If any one is using a dual display please advise!!

I am going to get either the x800 or the 6600GT series card!!

Neither the x800 series or the 6600 cards will require that large a power supply.  What you want is a QUALITY power supply.  My 6800GT runs great with my Antec 430W power supply.  But Antec guarantees that their power supplys will run at the rated output.  Guaranteed for LIFE.  The most power I've seen a card pull is the x1900 from ATI.  It draws up to 200W of power just for the card.  Nothing else even comes close to what that card draws.  Get a good quality 400W power supply and it will run any of the cards you are looking at reliably.  If you are buying a PCI express card, make sure it has the plug already on the power supply wiring.  Saves using an adapter and having one more spot where you can lose power or have an interruption.
