Just a quick question...can you or should you defrag HDD's in a raid-0 config?

Dont know the answer but since the subject is brought up.

Is it ok to compress the files to conserve disk space? OR would that adversely effect the game?

Not sure about the RAID thing but I'm pretty sure that compressing files is not a good idea. That makes the files uncompress as needed and I dont think you want to do that in a game evironment. could slow things down.
Ive seen to many people do that, then get caught in the trap of putting more on the drive and not ever being able to uncompress everything again.

sorry, can't answer for defragging a RAID "0" setup.......

I use a RAID "1"  ( mirrored ) and it does not mess anything up, is same as defragging 1 HD.......( just these big old HD's take forever and a day anymore to do a defrag, not like when we had lil ole  10/20 100 meg HDs, or even a 1 gig HD, seems they defragged in blink of an eye ROFL )

am sure some of these PC gurus will have you an answer shortly......

when defragging I do the same as I used to do whe I DLed large files on dialup.

I either start the defrag when I go to bed or when I head off to work.

Same thing with Virus scan

i myself never defrag ... As for compressing files to save space in a Raid/sata-raid config ... why .... id think it would slow down the raid stripping of the info myself .

Your OS knows how to use the RAID, Ive always defragged my systems that were RAID'd and saw good results.  

No, dont compress files, then your system has to uncompress em (CPU time, etc) to uncompress em for use.

Depending on my system usage, I tend to defrag every few days, more so when I've done a lot of file management (downloaded files, deleted stuff, etc).  I just use the microsoft one
