Title: Cool Avatars
Post by: Sloehand on March 15, 2006, 12:54:03 AM
I'm seeing a lot of great avatars in here, and being a basic nube when it comes to graphics design (at least that which doesn't relate to a Data Flow Diagram), I'm wonder what tool is being used to create them and how to do it.  I've got some ideas for a design, but don't know what s/w to use to create them. Hopefully, the learning curve isn't too steep either as I'm not much of a mountain climber.

http://www.alchemymindworks.com

this site boasts a fantastic .gif animation package thats easy to use and very effective. the shareware version is available for download.

'Gif construction set pro'

made my avatard with this. It combines a animation page with MS paint, or you can set it up to work with PS, adobe, etc.

this one is quite cool, took a few hours though, and nearly 900 frames :D

could be done alot better though, and viewing it in this way through an image link makes it slow down horribly in places.

edit: hit refresh to restart.

While my static avitar isn't as snazzy as the animated ones, it still says who I am...and is very unique.

PaintShop Pro 8 did the job.  Just make sure your sizing fits AH standards or it won't upload.

Paint for the image editing, Gif Contstruction Set Pro has a sweet animated gif wizard that makes the animation painless.

nah i just got overexcited when i first found an animation editor so userfriendly and free and sat there for 4 hours drawing first the set then editing each frame-copy paste it -edit to next frame -copy past- edit to next frame etc. boring as hell i only ever made one long one after that.

i see your 'inkwell' is really an f14 morpheus, nice works furball.

you dont need fancy photoshop skills to make avatars. check out this signature i made for another forum. i did it by cutting and pasting images then adding in other stuff.

and this one too.

Hey, thanks one and all for the info.  I'm still not sure exactly what all the parameters are, but I'll experiment and find that out.  I've got basic Photoshop, not sure about any animation feature though.  But I'm going to look up some of the links given, etc.  I guess I should add that I was looking for the most inexpensive solution as this is just going to be an occasional thing.  I don't expect to be doing alot of such work.
With one exception.  How would these tools and/or the process relate to designing nose art?  I want to take JG-3 signature graphic and try to shrink it down to usable size as nose art.
Anyway, thanks for the responses.

If you create a pic and shrink it to size (or shrink a given pic), blur it a bit before you resize.... looks better.
