The Left Coast strikes again.
The U.S. Navy offered to give the World War II battleship USS Iowa to the city of San Francisco. The USS Midway is berthed at San Diego and is a major tourist attraction and, according to USA Today, is rejuvenating local shops and restaurants, and the ship is booked years in advance for functions at up to $30,000 a pop.
Yet, despite the potential windfall from such a gift, the local Board of Supervisors voted 8-3 against the plan. The Board stated that it doesn't like the idea of having, right in their bay, a warship from a military that has a Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. And they don't like the Iraq war either.
Gerardo Sandoval, a San Francisco supervisor, puts it delicately: "I don't think the climate has improved for tying a 10-story warship, or gun, to the waterfront."
That's the same Gerardo Sandoval who went on Fox News last month and said that the United States shouldn't have a military at all - that the country would be in "much, much, much better shape" without one.
One thing about it...someone out there always finds a way to keep the rest of the country entertained.

Has anyone yet pointed out the irony that they don't seem to want BB-61 in the bay area, but are happy to have the Raiders back in Oakland?
-
I still say bring it here http://www.battleshipcove.org/bb59-history.htm
Check out the link, some pretty cool stuff, you can even spend a night on the ship

Bring it to Mobile Bay to sit beside the USS Alabama. Hell we would be glad to have another ship just hanging around waiting on the south the secede once again....:noid :t

This just in, San Francisco and Oakland are two different cities, separated by approximately 10 miles of water.

I'd love to have a ship in the Chesapeake Bay, I think it'd be a wonderful attraction.
Didn't there used to be a ship moored in Pensacola? I have a lot of family there, I seem to recall seeing something about it one time I was down there.

I've spent many nights onboard a ship.
It's not all that much fun.
Be sure to drink the boxed milk. Tasty!
Oh... and the cheese is great too. It will not rot. EVER.

Yes, that was the USS Lexington CV-16. AKA "The Blue Ghost." It's in Corpus Christi, TX now.

Nope, it's all San Francisco. Just like everything within 100 miles of Dallas is Dallas. (Boy, is Fort Worth ticked off about that!)

You bring up a valid point. We generally call everything in and around Los Angeles, "L.A.". Generally roll our eyes when someone says, "I don't live in L.A. I live in Glendale."

I used to live on the central coast... We thought everything South of Santa Barbara was LA-Diego.
