In the other thread, Nilsen was saying he was going to be getting a car for the family. Made me think of what car would I choose if I were him? I think, all things considered, the 2006 Corolla would be a good choice? What do ya'll think?

"What do ya'll think?"
I think anyone who would willingly put his family in a Corolla must not love them.

Why do you think that JAB? the Corolla has some impressive safety ratings:

against an up-armored AUV?

The Family Truckster just doesn't make it without the custom "Honkey Lips" graphics.
-
"Why do you think that JAB? the Corolla has some impressive safety ratings:"
Those ratings are virtually worthless in the real world--they're rigged to give an advantage to the smaller cars. They typically don't reflect multi-car crashes, and especially not ones where your car is struck by a larger vehicle (and in a Corolla, virtually everything on the road is bigger than you). They also don't normally account for features like AWD which might help you avoid a crash in the first place.
Let me put it this way--the Corolla and the Ford Crown Victoria both have a 5-star frontal crash rating. If that 2600-pound Corolla gets rammed by a 4000-pound Crown Victoria, do you REALLY think the guys in the Corolla will do as well as the guys in the CV? Obviously not, everyone knows it, yet the rigged system still counts them as equal. Isn't that messed up? If you want a better indicator of your vehicle's safety in the real world, check its curb weight. The safest thing on the road is a 5-axle truck, not a flimsy Corolla with 5 meaningless stars.
The rating system I use is what I've seen with my own eyes responding to crashes (or in some cases, actually being in crashes). From what I've seen, the sardine cans are deathtraps. I'm sick of seeing people get injured or die who would have been fine if they just had more metal under them.

yeah, but if the tincan rammed the crown vic in the rear the vulnerable vic's gas tank would explode.
does that bicycle have a air bag on the handle bars?

Only if you let her ride there.

Get a Volvo C70. LITERALLY, seating for 4 adults and leg room (not "sports car leg room"), a retractable hardtop, and a Dynaudio sound system. I may be getting this in 2007.

Naah; It has to be Messerschmitt...

LOL :D
Actually the Corolla may not be a bad idea toronto, but it would have to be a stationwagon type.
The candidates within budget so far are Passat, Avensis, 307SW and maybe a Volvo. My dad swears to Mercedes but thats a car for old people and abit on the expencive side. The new 3 series BMW or perhaps an A4 would be my choise if we were to spend more than we really want to.
I must say that the weener wagon looked great :D
-
And the Corolla we get in Yurop is a hatchback... same happens with the Honda Civic, I don't think we get the "long rear" version of that either.
But in fact there's a wagonish version of the Corolla, the Corolla Verso:

The mags seem to like the new civic, although I personally find the new front end styling to be ugly. Too much rake to the nose and the long window a-pillars block about 20 ft of road from your view. But mechanically they seem to be pretty good.
Maybe a 2 yr old used civic? The new accords aren't bad either.
Or a BMW 3 series... 330i is nice. A friend of mine got a 330xi and he loves it.

Ugly car that corrola.

A car is for me just a form of transportation, and not something I desire. I really dont care what it looks like as long as its reliable, comfortable and just enough space.
-
More on point, since this is NILSEN we're talking about, for some reason I imagine him driving one of these:

Lol Jab :D
Looks like a contender for "will it float" on Letterman.
-
Seriously this time....I'd say go with a Volvo, especially if you want a wagon.
J_A_B
-
The V50 is the Volvo of choise if we go with that brand. The missus likes it, but I havent tested it on the road yet.
-
Ok u dont care for looks .
here a reliable one it starts minus 40 degrees.

And I can't imagine anyone wanting guns just to shoot with them. Maybe I could when I was a kid.
-
I dunno.. if I had to drive a Wagon.. It woulds have to be a Volvo V70 T5 or a V70 R.
I want something that will atleast go like hell :D

Have you seen the size of the lutfiske in Kalifonia?

are they killer lutefisk?

oh yes! with big pointy teeth!

Pick yourself up a Octavia RS estate. Cheaper than a VW or an Audi.
-
That's pretty good option; Skodas are sharing parts and are using same standards with Volkswagen and Audi but are bit cheaper... I'd rather take fully loaded Octavia than plain vanilla Golf / Jetta.
-
Skoda is good. problem is that two of my closest neighbours have them.. I wanna be better than them. They are working class people.
-
Subaru Legacy.
4 x 4 would be useful in all that snow.
Also makes Top Gear's car satisfaction survey (takes EVERYTHING into account) http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/survey/top_10.shtml

Toyota Landcrusier if i go for a SUV type car... but i wont.
-
(http://www.geocities.com/yankeedoodledays/2000/shrin15a.jpg)
Probably gets good mpg. Nilsen you may want to change the flag though :)
-
Tha Skoda wagon ain't a bad looking wagon. I know nothing about the brand, but looks quite nice in the picture.
Volvo is a good car and not a bad looking wagon either.
The Subaru Furby points out looks better as a sedan than a wagon.
-
As far as I know Skoda is basicly a VW but with a different badge on the front and made by less payed workers. Almost same quality as VW but cheaper and less "status".
-
i also think its funny that in the Car Satisfaction Survey 7 out of the worst 10 cars are French.

Must havea something to do with the way their business is handled over on your lovley island. Here atleast Peugeot comes up high on the list

Skoda is a Czech company and one of the oldest companies in the world with a long history of metalworking. Made artillery for Napoleon among other things. They’re most known for their off-road trucks, self-propelled artillery systems and now cars. They’re owned by the VW Group.

HERACY!
And, I have a Chevy Astro.
If it's any consolation, I hate the damn thing. The only reason I still drive it is it's paid for and still runs, it'll haul my planes, it'll haul my trailer and all the show gear, has all wheel drive, gets 24mpg and my kid never ever wants to borrow it.

I bet they don't have RS's

I have a Skoda Fabia RS, a small hatchback. Great car. It's too bad they don't sell Skoda's in the states. The Octavia in the picture is the sporting version called RS. It has a the same motor found in the new Golf 2.0FSI 200PS. All Skoda's share the same chassis and motor groups as VW and Audi. Build quality is at least as good or better then VW and Audi.

If they are older then a month or so then they are normal Octavia's. See there ya go, that will piss them off.
-
They are older than a year so no RS
-
why dont you buy a quality Norwegian car?
-
Hmm....ehhh...mmmm.
Any car payed for and imported to Norway is a norwegian car so there! :o
-
If family has to be taken along then i'd choose the new Alfa Romeo 159 (http://www.channel4.com/4car/media/A/alfa-romeo/159/03-large/05-f3q-f.jpg) sedan or SW.
And if one doesn't have to worry about room for family then i'd go with Alfa GT (http://www.wrc-wallpaper.de/wall/Cars/Alfa%20Romeo%20GT%20Spider%203.jpg) or Mini Cooper S (http://www.bmwworld.com/pics/mini/6162_1024.jpg) :)
-
Nice looking car, but I'm not gonna pay extra for looks. :)
-
Thought that you wanted to have something else than your neighbours? :) The working class people :)
-
LOL :D
-
my kid never ever wants to borrow it.
That's definitly a strong argument! Keep it 'till my daughter has 18 years old and I'll buy it from you ;)
Nilsen, you should consider also the Toyota Corolla Verso. I've just bought the 177cv diesel version and it's definitly a great car for the price (26k€ with onboard GPS and rear/front camera system).
It's one of the cheapest car in his category... The 136cv diesel version should be around 23k€.
