Graduated in 87 . My first car was a 72 ss nova.
Took the engine and tranny from a vette. (think it was a 1970)
I was working after school and saturdays in a local salvage yard .
It was owned by a good friends dad.
As a matter of fact my friends first car was a datsun sundowner (think that was the name) that we had put a early 280 engine and tranny in. That car was one hell of a sleeper.
Bronk
Edit : just looked for pix of the car was a B210 hatchback.

I got my Farmers permit when I was 14, that is when I began driving. Between 1974 and 1978,(Graduated 1978) I had several cars that I bought by working various jobs:
1961 Olds Super 88 w/ 455 dropped in it
http://www.hubcapcafe.com/i_rdr/2003/olds6101.jpg
1965 Volkswagen Squareback
http://www.aiwana.com/square.jpg
1964 Falcon Futura Convertible with 302 boss dropped in it http://www.seriouswheels.com/pics-1960-1969/1964-Ford-Falcon-Futura-Convertible-red-custom-ma-2.jpg (I sold this car to a collector, who then restored it to original condition and engine, and last I heard it was still touring some of these Classic Car events. Wished I would have hung unto this car, I loved it the most!)
1967 Ford Fairlane with 289
http://www.musclecarclub.com/musclecars/ford-fairlane/images/ford-fairlane-1967a.jpg
1968 Buick Wildcat w/430 ci.
http://info.detnews.com/dn/joyrides/wheels/68buickbutler.jpg
(Note, none of the photos are mine, all cars similar to the ones I owned)
After I moved west, the next car I bought was the BIGGEST mistake in my life...a POS Audi Fox with 34,000 miles on it. By 60,000 miles, it was undriveable since just about everything that could go wrong, DID go wrong with that car. I'll never buy another Audi as long as I live.

I graduated in 1977. My first car I purchased my sophmore year was a 1967 Falcon, which I got for $600.00. My senior year I bought a 1967 Mustang , with a 289. I paid $900.00 for it. I look back on those days , and wonder how I had time to do anything. Being a student , playing football, which in Plano Texas in the 70's bordered on a fulltime job. I worked at a burger joint, also worked for my fathers construction company on weekends and in the summer. Plus I worked partime for the local funeral home.
I was never short on money. Wish I could say that now.:huh

I drove this:

1996 Ford Probe, 5 speed, POS. 0-60 is probably 30 seconds:o
I'll graduate in 2008.

Except it had a black vinyl roof and it was NOT the hemi.
At the time, it was the "family car"; wtg DAD!

I don't remember the specific year. It was a 60 something GTO, still have it too.
On second thought, I'm pretty sure its a 67.
-
68 Chevelle
Crap green dull paintjob
Interiour was immaculate though...was
Stock 307 w/quadrajet carb
But. I literally bought it from a little old lady who only used to drive it 5 miles to work every day and once a year down the shore. (my buddies Grandmother)
And who took it to the dealer for everything she ever had done to it and had the records to prove it.
Had exactly 58,000 original miles on it
Picked it up for $150 back in 1978
Ohhh the memories that car brings back
Had it 4 years before one day I'm blasting down the road pedal to the metal when all of a sudden all within the span of about 4 seconds.
The oil light came on, and the engine went
RAP RAP RAP RAP BOOM!!

Cortina Mk III, 2.0 litre, was brand new at the time (my old man got done for dwi so i drove him to work for 12 months and got to take his car to school).

When I was a sophomore in high school: 68 Falcon Station Wagon, 200ci inline 6 with 3 speed standard and rubber floor mats.
Next year, I bought a 67 Mustang GT.
Next year, I bought a 69 Road Runner.
I was the only kid in high school with 3 cars, all paid for by me. None were stock after I got through with them. The Falcon got the 289 from the Mustang after my sister borrowed it and blew the 6, then I built another 289 engine for the Mustang, and the Road Runner engine was rebuilt with goodies as well.

Dad owned an auto parts store, so I used to get all my performance parts for cost. I grew up around racers. Don Garlitts used to hang around my Dad's store and park his rail on the corner just outside the door of the place when he came to town to race.
Dad was a hot rodder as well. He had a 54 Ford flathead V8 chopped and lowered. It was a beautiful car and fast. Him and his best friend were always racing against each other, trying to see who could be the fastest from week to week.
I miss those days. Cars were fun to work on and the tricks you could do to get a little more power seemed endless.

I am spoiled, I should be happy to have a car that runs. I hear you guys when you say cars used to be so easy to work on, damn near need a lap top these days. Most everything is computer controlled. It's a shame, but that's life. By the way I was a little wrong on the POS part, it was only a POS the first month after I got my license, then it was check engine light every week or 2 weeks. $5,000 car so it's not horrible.
Catch this: Girl in my alegrba class got an 8 series BMW for her first car. Now I don't look so spoiled do I?;)
Oh and i'm hoping to rebuild an older Camaro or Mustang in a few years with my step dad. Money will be tight for a few years so have to start saving money right now. Heard a Chevelle revving up one day when I getting carts at work, one of the greatest sounds ever, rice rockets got nothing on that, as we all know.

Furball you bastage, I would kil for a Mini Cooper. That is if I could even fit in one, 6 foot 2 and still growing, the new ones are really cramped for me.

I quit school in December, got a GED, and wnet to Vietnam, seemd like the thing to do.
I had a 53 Chev Highboy, but I gave it away to a bud.
-
Had a 50 Austin with a Kaiser continental flathead 6 and plymouth tranny and rear.. it ran in the 16's I had to have a freind tow it to the drags cause I was 14 at the time.
traded it for a 38 chevy coupe with black naugahyde interior and a bright yellow paint job but it was pretty slow so..
Traded for a 47 chevy coupe with a 394 olds and 4 speed B&M full manual hydro in it...
Traded that for a 57 chevy 150 business coupe that I dumped a tri power 371 olds motor with shaved heads and a 3 speed then later a T10 four speed... the car ran in the 13's when I could keep from blowing the weak early chevy rear end up.
I had 2 triumph 40 inchers and a BSA lightning for bikes. Didn't have much money so all of this stuff was pretty cheaply done. but I did work in a machine shop in the summer and that helped.
last year I bought a 58 Healey100 6 that was a major purchase... paid $450 bucks for it but.... had to have it. Stock six was good enough to cirp the skinny meats in 3 rd and tear all the spokes out of the rear wire wheels too.
I lived a mile from Fremont Drag strip for most of my high school years.

That was also my first car. It was a hand me down from my dad. Damn that car was fun. I can remember the night I played Dukes of Hazzard in it and jumped the railroad tracks in the middle of town. Had to explain to my old man the next morning why the back bumper was in the trunk and why the muffler was gone. :)
Next car was a 1980 Pinto. I swapped the turbo out of a mustang into it and bolted it onto the 2.3L 4 banger. Bought a kit for the carb to make it flow more fuel, put in an electric fuel pump, added an intercooler ..........
Put a new engine in it after I blew up the first one .............
Replaced the automatic tranny after I cracked the bellhousing ............
Replaced the rearend with an aftermarket 8.8 inch posi unit .............
Replaced the engine again, only this time I put in a rebuilt and massaged 289 ................
Replaced engine again with a 302 and new tranny after losing the torque converter (sheared right off the flywheel) ..........
Gave up after I busted the timing gears in the 302 and got rid of the car.
It was alot of fun though. Ever been beaten in a street race by a stock looking Pinto? Muwahahahaha! Only thing worse was this guy in town that had a bright orange Gremlin with a 401 in it..............

1st the Short Bus...
then a '69 Camero nice 327 engine...loved that car.

I drove a 1988 Ford Escort, go it back in 1998 as my first car. only paid $50 for it too. Wasn't much too look at then, and isn't much to look at now either.

Same car as I drive now, 16 years later.
68 Ford Mustang Convt.

I graduated in 71. I had been fixing a car for a neighbor lady for several montsh keeping it running for her on a shoe string. One day she showed up at the house and said her car had siezed the engine and was at a particular corner. She couldn't pay me for the work I had done before but also knew she couldn't afford to fix it now. She gave me the title and went home. I went to where the car was and saw it was out of oil. I dumped in 3 quarts and started it up and drove it home.
The car was a 61 Dodge Lancer and had a 171 CI slant six with a 3 speed floor shift. I was able to find a decent 225 CI slant 6 in a junk yard and swapped them out. Unfortunately the car wasn't designed for that size engine and the heater had to go. I also had to cut a hole in the hood for the carb so I put on a hood scoop. The gear linkages wouldn't fit right and I had to reverse a couple. As a result 2nd and 3rd gear positions were in the oposite positions than normal. It was ugly, it was clunky but it ran and I drove it for 3 years and sold it for $500.00. I also had to replace the clutch every 6 months. I guess I had a heavy foot. :o It was actually very quick due to the low gearing (4,000 rpm in 3rd at 60 MPH) so it was like a small "Q"ship when someone else pulled along side. :D

Farm permit also here at 14 (its a WA, thing )
my '66 gto came 1st, then my 28 A (i still own bolth ) then my 1st race car a 69 cougar eliminator 428 car ... (shoulda never cut that one up) then my 58 chev apache 4by .

My first car was a 66 Falcon. Man I miss that car. Sold it to a girlfriends brother who put a 400 in it and never paid me. Sad.

1968 Chevy halfton long narrow stepside (YUCK)
307 w/ 2-barrel carb
4 speed, w/granny Low
4.56 ratio rear end
Later swapped in a nice little 400 small block I talked a local farmer out of, decent cam, traded for some decent heads, Holley carb, headers....for a truck it was quick, but NO top end. Could pull anything on the farm better than my dad's new trucks, which ended up being the truck's demise...HE used it and abused it.....wish I could find it now. Bought it from my granddad for $280 when I was a freshman in high school.....
Next year, bought a 1974 Monte Carlo Landau (whatever that means)
with a 350/350, 2 barrel carb, console, swivel buckets.....ugliest and suckiest Chevy I have ever owned.........
Next year bought a 1978 Monte Carlo.
This one was nice.....only had a 305 with a 2 barrel, and a TH350 automatic, but I was (un)lucky enough to get clocked going home one afternoon by a DPS officer at 136mph. Took about 5 miles to get it up that fast, which meant I was almost halfway down this 11 mile stretch of road that was straight as an arrow from where I went to school to the farm. The trooper knew my dad, knew me, didn't write me a ticket, but I got out of his car several pounds lighter in the arse....he chewed on me for almost 45 minutes, but NEVER told my dad.
1966 El Camino, still have it at the farm.......396, 4 speed, not a smooth panel anywhere, 12 bolt with 3.31 gears and no Posi....keep wanting to go get it and bring it up here and finally start restifying her.....just haven't done it yet.
-
I would have graduated in 1980, but I tested out early and joined the Coast Guard. I grew up on a small farm in rural North Texas, still live there today. My first vehicle was my grandfather's last, a 1968 Ford F100. 260ci 6cyl, Granny 4 speed, west coast mirrors, no radio, no a/c, rubber floormat, stepside bed with the spare tire mounted on the side. It was canary yellow with 900 dents. Granddad couldn't see too good in his later years and bounced off every tree in the pasture at least twice.
I drove that pickup for 2 years before I had a license. It was slow and looked like hell warmed over, but I didn't care. It ment I didn't have to ride the bus to school. Hauled a million bales of hay, fence posts, cows, dirt bikes, you name it. I still miss that old truck.
-
I was given a 1965 Corvair on my 17th birthday (1970), which I drove for two years. The first car I bought for myself was a 1958 Alfa Romeo Guilietta Spider Veloce (1971). I spent a year overhauling the head, gearbox and rebuilding the brake system. Somewhere in my photo collection are several pictures of the old Alfa, but getting them out would be a federal case... So, I found a nice photo of a '58 Spider Veloce on the web. Same color, same year. I sold it in 1977 for $3,500. Today, a fully restored Guilietta will set you back more than 30 grand.

I had a 66 Chevy II SS 327-350HP L-79 4 speed to start with. It was stolen and I drove the farm truck until I could pick up a 64 Impala SS.
It had a dying 283 in it, so I got it cheap ($75). My cousin had a 63 409-425HP in his garage, I bought it for $250. Seems it had been replaced by the dealer with 400 miles on it. It was killing rockers, lifters, and cams. Turned out to have the rear cam bearing in it wrong. I figured this out by seeing one side of the valvetrain didn't oil. So I pulled the trans and bellhousing, slid the cam forward, and replaced the cam bearing and plug. Damned thing worked perfect after that. I pulled the heads. Why? It came with two sets of head gaskets on it to keep the compression down. If you took one set out the compression went way up. So I did. It also came with killer valvesprings in the trunk, but I only got the engine, not the car, and the engine was 16 when I got it. So I had to find someone to get the valvesprings.
It ran 7 flat through the 1/8 mile. It ate Muncie 4 speeds and rear end housings until I put a second upper control arm on it and built a pro shifted Muncie. Problem was, it got 6MPG. after all, it had two Carters on it, and made an honest 500HP. So I sold it to my brother. And he blew it up. I bought a brand new 1980 Z-28 350 4 speed. Kept it a year, after I figured the payment and insurance cost more than gas for the 409 Impala, I sold it for $250 and take over the payments.
Finished school with a 72 Ventura II, 307 automatic. I had a chance to pick up a 69 Chevelle SS 396-325HP, but I was too broke. The Camaro wiped me out. The Chevelle was $600 more than the Ventura, but I just didn't want to go borrow the $600 after having the payments on the Camaro for a year. I was a fool. The Chevelle was a 2 owner car with 100K miles, 1 square inch of rust and one dent.

I've got a nice little yellow 65 Corvair Corsa 140 4 speed now. Has the full Crown suspension kit. I'm working on a 3.1 litre engine with two three barrel Zeniths from a 911 Porsche. The original engine was a 2.7 with four one barrels, rated at 140HP and actaully made about 130. The new one will make 300HP. If I can tuck them in the fenders, I'm putting 88 Corvette 16x9.5 wheels on it and 4 wheel disc brakes.

But I did own a a 1983 B2000. It's probably the same model as yours, I think the new model came out in '85. I worked the tail off it for 17 years as a farm ute. It was very reliable and cheap to run, but in the end I just wore it out and spares were getting hard to find for it.

I was lucky and it was a hand-me-down from my dad. I sprung for a paint job, tonneau cover and a stereo. Before I was finished with it, I went though two more stereos, tore out the exhaust and put in a header (yeah, a header LOL) strait back to a muffler, and installed a high performance Holley carb that did a great job of throwing fuel into the motor (if only it could have used it for something). It probably ended its life in a junkyard in L.A. after being traded in for a '96 S10. It had a leak by then and I went through five quarts of oil on the way down, most of which ended up coating the firewall. :)

man, you guys who still have your first cars allways facinate me... I guess I just get bored and want to try something else... but then... had a couple of wives and too many girlfriends too..
Only car I have kept for a long time is my 55 Healey... they were getting hard to come by even then. the only car I regret getting rid of was my 59 vette... just got tired of it at the time and something else sexy was calling me.
widewing... friend of mine had a 58 alfa in high school (not sure the model but looked like the pic)... I helped him overhaul it... they have sleeves in the motor and it was the first time I had ever seen anything like it... the brakes were a nightmare too. Was an Ok car when it was done but my 100 6 Healey would beat it. Think he paid $500 which was a lot back in 67.

I967 Mustang GT fastback, big-block (s-code for those who know) and a 4-speed "toploader", blue on black, deluxe/deluxe.
I paid $800 for it since it would not run (1980) and with a $89.95 clutch it was fine. I drove it for 6 years before selling it for $8K, my former college roomate still has it and turned down $25K for it recently.
My current "fun car" is a 67 convertible GTA, had it since 1987. Daily driver is a 2005 GT.

Graduated in `70.
I was lucky in the fact that Dad always had hot cars that I drove before I had my first one. My granddad had a `53 Plymouth that I drove a lot. Was a blast.
I built my first chopper when I was between 13 and 14. Always had one or two chops in the works through HS. When possible, I went anywhere and everywhere on my chop.
My first car was a `64 Nova. I had a black vinyl top, a marina metal flake paint job and chrome wheels on it in a short time. After getting it slicked up I immediately wrecked it in a 7 car pile up. The town was aprx 600 in population. I became known as population control after that.
Next car was a `65 Mustang convertible. Without a doubt was the biggest POS of a car that I have ever owned. (Wish I had oiled the cylinders and put it on blocks :))
Bought a `68 Camino. Was a pretty good ride.
Then I got the ultimate chick magnet as far as cars goes......a `61 Vette. White with red interior and cheeeeerry. Only car that I have ever owned that I never grew tired of driving and never took for granted. Loved that car.
During HS years I had a few pickups that I played with and traded regularly.
I had a couple of toy cars also. One was a Renault which me and a couple of friends turned over on three different occasions in one day on the back roads. The other was a Fiat. Turned it end over end 3 times in a classic crash. Still carry the results on my right hand. :)
Had a `40 Chevy that I tweaked on. Was a nice old ride.
Also myself and a friend was in partnership on a `57 ford that we souped up and would break out occasionaly when we felt like playing "Thunder Road".

Graduated in 95.
During high school I drove:
1973 Toyota Celica. Matching body panels is overrated. 18R, 4 on the floor. It was a great car, it gave me opportunities to learn about auto repair. Weber carb, mismatched tires, it was essentially a cars-worth of parts traveling in loose formation. Confiscated by the Sheriff.
1983 Suzuki RX50 Midnight Special, a 50cc street bike which, when ridden by me, most commonly evoked memories of bears riding tiny bicycles in the circus. I modified it to serve as a pizza delivery vehicle when the Celica was unavailable (which was surprisingly often).
1978 BMW 320i. Fantastic car until the head cracked, as is the custom for those vehicles. It had a 'Reactor failure' warning light on the dash, always wondered what would happen if that light illuminated.
1975 Audi LS100. The less said, the better. Highlight: The trip from Eugene, OR to Seattle, WA (290 miles) that took 3 days.

Yes, but it's called a Taunus. A friend had a POS Taunus with a modified text on the trunk "Anus".

Some of you "older fellas"... if you only kept some of those cars. My aunt had a 57 nomad then a 57 bel air. After highschool she had a few mustangs and a vette. The two cars I would kill to own which she had was a boss 302 that my father said the clutch was so stiff he could hardly walk on his left leg after driving it and the 57 Nomad. Both of which she parked in the field behind the barn at my grandfathers house and let rot into the ground. The same field where all the farm equipment was "put to rest". The only thing left worth anything by the time I was old enough to start loving cars, was a 71 malibu with a crappy 305. That my stupid cousin con'd my grandfather in giving to her boyfriend at the time who broke up with her several months later.

A friend had a '72 detomaso pantera that he thoroughly trashed. no telling what that car would be worth now. another friend had bmw 2002 tii that would go 115mph all day long. that got trashed as well. another friend had a '68 GTO another a '65 GTO another a superbee another a roadrunner another '69 Z28 with the 302 that was evil fast. all those cars got trashed. I wish I had garaged mine and kept it, but I trashed them both as well. we tended to be rough on the equipment, still do.

The one I'm still kicking myself in the a** over is the 70 challenger that I had all restored except for paint. I was 19 working in the salvage yard full time, had full access to all the parts at cost. I had swapped K-member so I could put the 440 in . The thing was all set 440, 4 speed, Dana 60 rear . I welded new floors in Interior was all set had the seats reupholster. All the car needed was paint.
This car kept me broke because as soon as I had my paycheck some parts were purchased. Then one day a friend of my boss came in waving 5k in cash , well being 19 and dumb I jumped. A month later the guy comes back with the car all painted . I then proceed to smack my head against the garage wall repeatedly.

A car in high school? In my dreams, my Father didn't even have a car. I didn't have a bicycle never mind a car. None of us kids had cars back then. Except for one guy once. He had an imported American '64 Mustang! It was battered but it worked.
I believe it's all changed now with the advent of the Celtic Tiger economy. Some kids now have their own cars. I remember reading that teachers were complaining that the students were taking up all the parking spaces in the schools:lol Not only that they drove better cars than the teachers! Times have changed.

i absolutely LOVED my Mini. Always something minor going wrong with it but then that just adds to the fun of owning one.
So much fun to drive, you can just throw it around corners with a big smile on your face. It is terrible for motorway driving, long distances etc though. I dont know how many of them you have over there, but here there are a fair few about and no two are the same. Each one really is unique because there is so much stuff you can do to them. Mine was red and white like the picture i posted, for the world cup in 2002 i got two red sun visor strips, turned the roof into a giant St.Georges Cross (England flag). It looked fantastic so i left it like it!
So many great memories. Such a 'character' which i have not found in another car. If you get chance to own one do it, you will not regret it. I am 6" and didnt have a prob fitting in mine.

Both the 69 Z-28 302 blocks, code DZ and code MO, were large journal. We used to restore 2-3 a year. They aren't as common anymore, most are either already restored or already destroyed. The 1967 Z-28 302 was small journal though. Only done two of them, there were only 602 built.

doh, hehe, that's right. I was thinking of cleveland blocks. I had one of them too, and just got through getting rid of it. Now all that's left is a 351 windsor and the DZ block.
If one of you chevy guys are interested in the DZ block let me know. I will be putting it on ebay otherwise. I will take all the pictures you like.
Edit: Of the block that is.

I saw a '71 240Z with a shoehorned 302/camaro drive train a long time ago but never saw the car run. it must have been a handful. it was a clean installation on a clean car.

My first ACTUAL car was this
(http://autohobbypage.com/show/03/all/all499.jpg)
79 Chevy Malibu Station Wagon
I'm pretty sure it had a V8 in it but not sure what size. The thing was a beast and it took out mail boxes/trash cans like the best of them. Yup I was one of those teenagers that I now hate.

I graduated in 74, in 73 I worked all summer for my Grandfather and recived a 61 Chevy BelAir station wagon with a police special 283 in it Wish I still had it.....

Graduated in '81.......1975 Cutlass Supreme, 350 Olds Engine with the 4 barrel carb....Took out the original radio and put in a sweet tri-axial speaker 8-track player.
Was lucky enough to take my Dad's '55 Chevy Bel-Air convertible to the prom. I helped him restore it to original condition. I'll never forget the speech he gave me before I left to pick-up my date.....If you wreck this car, you'd better hope you don't make it out of the crash....he was absolutely serious.
He gave my wife his '66 Mustang 289 V-8 convertible as a wedding present. It still has the original pony seats.

Well, it may have APPEARED that he was serious...if he was, I doubt you'd respect him much today.....
That said, do you still have that 66 pony?! SWEET! Pics if you got them!
-
Hehe...Rip, I know he wasn't, but at the time, he got the message across.
Yep, still have the Pony.
When I took my wife back to meet my folks, I took her out to the barn and showed her the hay loft, and after that showed her my old man's Chevy and the Mustang.
So back up at the house during dinner, she commented on how much she liked the Mustang because she had one in high school (not the classic kind, but the crappy late 70's kind).
So when we got engaged, my folks drove it to Boston and gave it to her as a wedding present. When I saw that, I asked why she couldn't have said she liked the Bel-Air!
-
damn stringer... had you pegged for a VW bus or renault guy.

Hehe Lazs.....I hunt and fish too....
That Bel-Air was a sweet car. We found it driving down the street and it was sitting in this guy's garage with the garage door open.
We stopped, and the guy's wife answered the door (he wasn't home). We asked if it would be for sale, and the guy's wife said hell yeah it is, and so is the crap in the back yard....he had a vette, and some other classic back there.
Long-story short, we picked up the Bel-air for $5K, but it needed alot of work. We took it down to the frame and rebuilt it from the ground up. We got an extra set of bumpers chromed, plus found an extra engine and powerglide transmission. We even put in the "wonder-bar" radio that came as an option back then.
I can remember painting all those damn Chevy emblems on the chrome piece that ran across the dash. We put glass packs on it, and it just purred.
