Title: Quick Comparison Chart For Planes
Post by: calan on March 17, 2006, 07:38:08 PM
First of all, I understand that plane performance is highly subjective. With that out of the way...

Does anyone have a chart that ranks the different planes in various categories? I'm thinking something like a rating of from 1 to 10, maybe in the following categories (rated at "typical" combat loads and at the plane's ideal altitude,  low/mid/high):

1. Fuel Range
2. Weapon Ballistics
3. Low-Speed Turning
4. High-Speed Turning
5. Acceleration
6. Top Speed
7. Roll Rate
8. Survivability
9. Rate of Climb
10. Diving Ability
11. Resistance To Compression

Again, I understand that a lot of this is subjective and varies at different altitudes, but a generalized chart would be great for beginners to get a rough idea of a plane's strengths and weaknesses, compared to other planes.

Just a thought..

TIA!

Calan

Most information you are looking for can be found at the wonderful website www.webaces.org (http://www.webaces.org), especially tables on speeds and climbrates. Information about compressibility or "survivability" (i don´t think you can put such a thing in a chart) can often be found in the individual aircraft´s description you can find also at this site.
For turn radii (???) Kweassa has tested all planes and shared his wisdom in this thread (http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=155592)

Well Calan that is a LOT of information to get into one sheet.

Considering we have over 60 different planes/GV's/etc thats going to take a pretty good spreadsheet to hold it all. Most of the hard data will be available either in the AH downloadable help file. Soda's AC pages (Link on netaces)

A lot of people eventually find some way of "giving back" to this addiction we share.  Since this is something your interested in, why not give it a shot?
After all, it was your idea, right?   :)

Actually Ghost, I started working on one. The problem is that since I'm new to AH, I don't know the planes well enough to even make a guess on how to rank them in the different categories.

I'm trying to gather information from as many sources as possible (Soda's reviews, AH Help, etc.) to compile into a single spreadsheet, but it's hard to find complete info. Soda's pages are very helpful, but not all planes are covered and he doesn't mention certain attributes on some planes. Even the AH help doesn't show climb rate charts for each plane.

If anyone wants to contribute a list of plane "ratings" for a specific category, that would be great   ;)

netaces as a whole is a fantastic ressource that everybody new (and some not so new) to this wonderful addiction we call AH should have to read twice (at least).

Specifically at netaces, as pertains to this thread, one should go to the Plane Performance Data (http://www.netaces.org./ahplanes/comparisons/comparisons.html#title) section.

Weapon Performance (http://www.netaces.org./ahweapons/weapons.html#title) is there as well.

Much of what you are looking for is there.

yeah Lute.. I agree..  I'm applying a lot of what I've found there.

After some further thought, I think the best way to approach this is to rank each plane against the best AH plane in each category. (Again, I know this is subjective, but it's a start).

For example, for low-speed turn ability, I would give the A6M's a 6 (elite), and rank other planes against them as follows:

1 - Very Poor
2 - Poor
3 - Fair
4 - Good
5 - Excellent
6 - Elite (The best in the game)

I've got the spreadsheet done (MS Excel) and ready to be filled in. If anyone wants to rank one or more planes that they are familiar with, send me your email address and I'll send the spreadsheet.

If I can get enough data together, I'll compile it into an online page that can be sorted, filtered, etc.

TIA!

It would be nice if Twist would come out of retirement and update his Twist's Pages for AH.
