Anyone have any tips to ease the transition from twisty to pedals ?? My pro pedals arrived today , and im giving it a go . I cant believe the control you have with them , even thou i just started , there are slips and different things that are hard (if not inpossible ) to do with a twisty . Any tips or hints appreciated . im gunna suck more than usuall for quite some time lol

Congrats, and Enjoy! I just upgraded, and I would be lying if I told you that I made the change overnight. I still forget to use em in the heat of battle! lol. I did find that they are sensitive to calibration, and I do not use them for brakes (yet).
38ruk, what really helped for me was to go into the TA and follow someone around, never losing sight, and think of the RudderPedals all of the time...
Oh, and 1 other thing SILAT told me, I dont put my big size 13's right on the whole pedal, rather,,, use toes/ball of feet. It starts making sence.. just dont forget, it can be deadly! lol
-
it takes a good month or 2 to really get used to them ... somedays im right on super smooth.... other days im just stuck on stupid and i catch myself with offset feet/ peds ... may as well leave the flaps down.
Youve seen my Jug on peds it does some sweet stuff now :)
spiral climb is really easy too .. its really a huge adv over my old twisty stick.
fly with combat trim off in most rides now. and when things get to ruff just leave them centered ... you'll see what i mean .. (beware of the floppity jug when you over correct at the wrong time its a handfull)
-
Just practice, before long its like 2nd nature. Love the CH stuff.
-
THX for the suggestions guys , It like a whole new game now hehe . If anyone ever gets bored with the game i suggest making the twisty / pedal switch , it wont be boring at all .
-
I've had mine for AGES and love them... The biggest warning I can give you is to make sure that you just let them neutralize after you kick in some rudder... I find that I have a habit of riding on which ever pedal I last used, meaning that I'm pushing like 25% right rudder... And Then next time I go to shoot someone nothing goes where I expect it to!
Other than that, just get a feel for them, don't OVER use them. They are handy as hell for taxiing, runway keeping, slipping the approach, and tweaking a shot.
MOST OF ALL, the level of control you can get in a bomber gun is FANTASTIC... You are working the stick to run the gun, and making HUGE turns with the rudder pedals... I get great results like that...
Also very handy in vehicles since you can man the guns and easily steer the vehicle.
Welcome to the big leagues!
-
I find driving around in gvs and flying in bombers, that pedals make it easier. As far as using them to fly, well, I still suck after 1 and a half months. My hit percentage droped from 10 to 2 and then in 2 weeks back up to 5 %. :) Still not where I was before pedals, but it's really fun with pedals.
-
As mentioned don't use your whole foot. I rest the balls of my feet just above the bottom of the pedal so they are "caught" by the heel rest at the base of the pedal.
If you want it to make sense...go spend $49 on a flying lesson and try your hand at taxiing on your way in/out from the runway.
-
I never could get good with the pedals. My 'foot/eye' co-ordination is terrible.

I do the same thing, The only time my whole foot is on the pedal is to use the brakes... And like golfer, thats something I learned in real planes... I suppose that might not be obvious to someone who has never done it.
Another big hint that no one has mentioned yet, is don't try to use them with your shoes on... This way you just keep a toe on each one and make little adjustements.
-
shoot the guys off line and go to the DA. worked for me.
-
kurt has a great point.fly barefooted...you'll never go back to shoes.as far as pointers...they've all been said..its just a matter of time.

I have a pair of moccasins I fly in. I call them my flight boots. :)
I use the old CH pedals so you have to have your feet firmly planted on them as they pivot instead of slide.
-
one of my early tricks is to sit on the runway in outside view
move your rudder back and forth .. get used to the location of 5- 35 % deflection, thats were i spend most of my time for lining up shots . It worked really good in my FA days ... i spent 2 hrs doing that with my "Roopeds" and it really helped .
-
I wear socks or play in bare feet. No shoes as well.
Sure is amazing to see how things evolve from just a regular sidewinder joystick in 1994.
-
Guys I am currently using old set of ch game port pro peds.
How much more smooth/ accurate are the usb ones. I ask this because the game port peds feel almost like a ratchet . I can almost see a notch of rudder being applied and cant get in between the notches.
Also i can't get the toebreaks to work with xp.
Bronk
-
Bronk, I've used both the game port and USB pedals, and there isn't a noticeable difference. You may have a bad pot which is causing the notch problem. You can get a new one here (http://www.chproducts.com/shop/parts.html) for about $10. It's pretty easy to replace if you have a philips screwdriver.
-
Ahh bad pot ehh . thanx I'll have to order1 and see.

THX for all the replies, I'm all over the place with these things right now . I'm forgeting to let the rudder go back to center alot , and basically trying to find a foot position thats comfortable . I woke up this morning and my legs and butt are sore as hell lol. I kinda like to have my whole foot on em right now so that i can push on 1 and pull the other , seems to make the input smoother .

after a week or so of using them, you'll get used to the pedals. All this talk about taking a couple of months to get used them is a load of crap.
ack-ack
-
I made the transition to pedals 13 years ago so its not the most clear memory, but I dont remember it taking more than a week-10 days. :)
-
if u fly twistys for 5 years it does take a little longer..some planes feel better with pedals some worse
-
1)Setup / joystick / joystick settings and move rudder slidders up from left to right. Make left slider about 40 % up from bottom and rest of sliders in almost straight diagonal to top right. So the curve isn't so great in the whatsit box. You may need to adjust dead band and damper to your prefered feel but leave it as it is for now. To much dead band and damper undoes the slidders. You'll get a feel and can adjust at a later date.
2)Shoes off.
3)Practise some rolls applying rudder the same way as roll.
4)Make sure you centre rudder after applying.
5)Chace some poor sod around TA for a few hour.
6)Don't miss trying to shoot guys down:aok

Your not gona be alone, I ordered the CH stuff last week and it should be arriving here by Tues. or so .... Been on Microsoft SideWinders since before dirt , and I have been told the learning curve is gonna be a bugger....

I've got the USB model. Occasionally I have to cycle mine back and forth in game to get them to respond with full sensitivity and range. Anybody have comment or solution?

Give me a shout when u get ur stuff, we can go be pathetic in the da , or ta lol . Ive gotten alittle discouraged as of late , losing easy fights and missing easy shots . I left my stick unlocked so when i see my hand twist i try and use my feet in that direction lol, its gunna be more than a couple of weeks im afraid . Guess using a twisty for 10+years is gunna be hard to "unlearn" heh

One thing that helped me transition, was going out and spending time in attack mode straffing vehicles and objects. The constant need for rudder to line up the shot was a good brain trainer for me.
-
Thx murdr , ill give that a try

:o (am I should be using rudder to line up shots?)
:cry (I dont mind admitting I am a dope, I am able to learn by listening to advice from others) The more I know, the more I know how little I know... about lots of crap

The rule of thumb I use here is...
If you're shooting at kurt, don't line up the shot.. If you're shooting at other people/things then yes, it can be helpful.
-
You can manuver your nose to a target, but then a little bit of rudder really helps to get the "perfect" shot, as opposed to the "only grazed his wingtip" shot.
-
ohh man i have these and there awsome they will take time to get use to but once you do you'll love them. trust me is way better then a twisty stick.

:lol been there. been using my pedals for about 3 months and after about 2 hours of flying, start getting tired, suddenly I realize my right foot has been pushing down on the pedal for who knows how long and no wonder i'm not flying straight and havin a hard time catching typhoons :lol

LOL i know the feeling. ive flown for quite awhile with my foot stuck halfway on the rudder
I must say that after getting some time under my belt with pedals , they are definitely better for fine adjustment that a twisty . Right now im getting comfortable with BNZ flying , but in a low turning fight to the death i still get flustered in split second situations . The game is really more exciting thou hehe

If your (home) office chair has wheels.. find a way to block them. Before I did that I found myself often far from my desk, with both legs extended... the cat and girlfriend giving me an odd look.

Great! just what the MA needed was 38 getting even better.:cry :D

My cat and wife give me that look all the time. I wish I could blame it on unblocked wheels.

One question... can the "twisty" function be disabled so the pedals can be added, or does this transition require a "non-twisty" type stick?
HH

You can use a twisty with pedals , you just have to map the rudder function to the pedals . Some sticks have locks on the twist, but its not a nessessity .
-
HeavyH,
Selecting joystick axis assignments in the AH control setup does exactly that. If you're fun like me you can mix and match (on a squaddie's CPU) pitch, roll and yaw to different things that way when your buddy takes off...he doesn't know what way is up.
-
The stick will always twist, you can simply take away any input from that axis. In case it wasn't clear :)
-

Hehehe - Come visit CT bud and I'll get you as much Pitts time as you can take.:aok Bring BGB and Herbmaw with ya too 8).
-
i was using an x45 when i went to pedals so the seperation of twisty was already there....
i kept the rudder rocker on the x45 inactive and kept flying using it, just mentally told my feet, when my right hand moves, move my feet.
it took me about 2 months to get to the point i didn't have to "think" about moving my feet for rudder action.

I'll prolly be up there this year , have family in wolcott. BGB would be a blast to get in that thing , URb has been MIA since marriage hehe.
Do you have a vomit relief tube ? I'm sure you would turn me green in about 30 seconds hehe . 38
-
Wolcott!! Saweet! Thats Badboy58's town. I can fly into Robertson Airport no problem.
Yeah I gots a barfbag, but as soon as you start to feel funny we'd head back to land. Definately let us know when you come into to town! I'll get ya up in the Pitts and we'll go get some beers!
Urb got married! LOL. Holy crap!
-
Badboy actually arrested my uncle in the past LOL , I heard tonight he got arrested again, talk about coincidence. He really is a sweetheart , but thats a whole other story :o . Funny how small a world we live in hehe . Im pretty sure there is going to be a reunion this summer in Cheshire so i'll definetly get in touch . <

Well after 3 weeks , im still losing fights and missing shots i shouldnt . I now have a ch fighterstick to go with the pedals , but that just made it worse LOL. I'm just set in the ways of a twisty , but i cant quit now ive spent too much $. There's nothing like paying to be frustrated ERRR hehe
I must say that the CH stuff makes everything else ive used look like a toy, this stick was bulit for a giant lol , i can hardly reach the hat switch . Super smooth, tons of buttons, i cant blame the hardware for my lack of skill anymore hehe Well Maybe . :D

I don't think I ever got used to my pedals until I started using them in vert scissors and crazy stall fighting. The rudder control was so nice that it felt like my 38 was a UFO. Just start always, always kicking rudder to assist your roll rate and your feet will start moving on their own as needed.

Using pedals flying the P-38 or anyother plane...it didn't take more than a few days to get used to them.

The best suggestion here was to fly without combat trim. But you do need lots of practice. I find that playing IL-2/FB/AEP/PF for a bit really helps me get my coordination going in the right direction before I step out into the online world. I haven't played lately with a twin engine plane so I can't offer up any advice.
-
Took me a looooong time to get instinctive with pedals.................
not helped by my office type wheeled chair!!!

Thats cause ur god , or maybe i'm just a simpleton . How long did you fly with a twist stick? .
Thx to all that gave advice 38

i put my sliders for pedals all hte way at the top... thats all i have for ya.

Hang in there bud ... it will come.
When I got the FighterStick, I was real disappointed too because I too suffer from the "short thumb" genetic disorder, plus that nipple on the hat was actually boring a hole in my thumb
So, what I did was get a dremel and gently sanded down the nipple till it was basically gone and the hat was flat.
This not only stop it from boring a hole into my thumb, but it also made it much easier for me to work the hat. It made a huge difference ... else I was going to have to try and find some other stick to use.
-

You soft handed gurly mon!!!! :D
-
Good idea on the Hat slappy . i ended up taking some 1 inch pipe insulation and using it as a ring around the base of the stick , it moves my hand up about an inch or so and makes the hat alot easier to reach. I think im gunna do the sanding thing thou , that point just doesnt "feel" right .
Ive seen how good the CH stick / pedals combo can be, you can do stuff that is almost impossible with a twisty (and be smooth anyway) , its just getting my hands and feet in sync 8). Thx for all the help guys , i really appreciate it . <> 38
