Title: DFW Gun Range.............????????
Post by: Jackal1 on March 21, 2006, 09:49:54 AM
Caught just a sketch on the news about the collapse. Not enough detail to actualy know what happened and how many were injured, if any.
Anyone here use this range? Was any of you there when it collapsed? Everybody OK, etc., etc. ?
This was just skipped over with a short report. Most of the time was spent interviewing Mary Lou who lived down by the creek and hearing the tale of sadness about her watching the water rise for 3 hours and her rescue, etc.

Found this on the Dallas Morning News site.

---------------------------------------------------------------
The roof on the DFW Gun Range in the Love Field area collapsed under the weight of water. Employees say that about 2 p.m. Sunday, they heard what sounded like thunder when the roof began to fail, causing an exterior brick wall to give way. The wall fell on cars parked outside the building in the 1600 block of Mockingbird Lane.

About 10 people were in the gun range and protected by a wooden structure during the incident. One person, who was outside, suffered a minor cut to the head.

DFW Gun Range is on Mockingbird between Harry Hines and Stemmons. The TV show "Ed" was based on the guy that owns the place.

Last fall I flew into DFW for a couple days work in the area. I saw a flier in the airport about the range. After checking into the hotel me and a few of the guys I was working with went to check it out.

The range was nice and the selection of firearms you could rent was awesome. I settled in on a Kimber .45 and 4 boxes of ammo. The adventure wasnt cheap, it cost me somewhere around $80 for the hour spent in the store. But it was a very fun experience. I really wanted to buy that .45 when I was finished, but decided to save the money for more WW2 long guns...its an addiction of mine.

I hate to see that the range has been damaged. What are the chances it will be repaired? Skuzzy if they rebuild you should check it out.

beet... you were free to do all of that before you took away the smokers and pub owners freedom... You could breath fresh air any place you wanted.

You seem to dfine freedom as being whatever seems to be in your personal best interest and that means. to you,  that taking away other peoples freedom is of no consequence.

your defenition of freedom seems to be your freedom to take away the property rights of anyone you please so long as it will be to some real or imagined benifiet to you.

- except in a pub. There were two choices available to me -  breathe in a smoke laden atmosphere, or stay away. Soon there will be a third way - that of being able to hang out at my local hostelry, and breathe relatively clean air. The first time I was ever able to exercise that privilege was in California in 1998, smoking in bars have been banned there for a great many years.

Not sure what you're getting at, old bean. I am not making any judgements, and neither have I made any derogatory remarks about the US in this thread. I have never suggested, on this board or anywhere else, that Americans should give up their rights to gun ownership. That seems to be happening in any case, in cities like Washington DC and San Francisco, where gun ownership rights are being taken away...

Actually I have lived in the US - for about three years in total.

You made the comment about, "all you dorks getting it" (paraphrased, but dorks was mentioned).  Living here 3 years is not being raised here, nor does it make you a citizen.  During the 3 years here, I would just imagine your allegiance was still with England, as it should be.

I have visited a lot of countries and I never presume to tell them how thier culture would benefit from blah, blah, blah.  I make an attempt to understand and respect thier culture and leave it at that.
People make up the culture and society of a country.  What those people are used to, accept, and are happy with makes thier culture the best, for them.  Presuming any culture is better than another approaches arrogance.

There really is no reason for you to have an opinion about how our country deals with guns.  As there really is no reason for someone in the U.S. to have an opinion on how England deals with guns.
This does not mean we should not spend any time getting to know the differences between cultures and how they work.  It simply means no one should be free to berate a culture for its own choices.

Many times, you appear to do just that, whether intended or not.  Just FYI.

In the relative sense, indeed it is. You have to remember that this board is full of people who profess to have an intimate knowledge of England, but have never been here at all!

You should try putting the boot on the other foot from time to time, and analyse what your compatriots have said about Britain in addition to what you feel I have said about America. Your points are indeed valid, but the thoroughfare of the discussion is a two-way street. Quid pro quo, or something like that.

This board isn't "full" of Americans of the type you identified.  There are a few, and they're quite vocal, and just as annoying as you are when you get going.  Just like there are a few (less I'd say, but just as vocal) Euros of the opposite side of the coin.

There are also some of us who , "profess", if you will, to have absolutely no interest or intention of ever going to England. That seems to be what bothers you and compels you to jump in, head first , into threads that doesn`t even pertain to that subject. You don`t have to go to a place to know enough about it to know it holds no interest for you to the point of visiting there. We don`t live in a vacuum. Visiting a country on short term certainly would not make it any more interesting. Boredom is boredom ,no matter what the subject.
Look at it this way. You have been in the U.S. , short term. I believe you say three years, yet you seem to not have a workable knowledge of the U.S. Your trip didn`t help you much in that area. I know enough about England to know I have no desire or interest in ever visiting there. Doesn`t make it a terrible place, it just holds no interest , to the point of visiting, to go there. If you are happy there, then more power to you.

I was asking about the DFW Gun Range with this thread because I caught just a snippet on the news about the collapse. I know there is a lot of folks here from that area who enjoy shooting at ranges, so I was sort of interested in seeing if anyone was hurt or killed there and getting more details. We are sort of funny that way around here. We like to take care of our own.
Your leading comment in this thread was.......................... ....

Jackall - you seem pissed off with my initial comment in the thread. If it caused offence, I apologise. But please remember that I too have started threads about  topics which many Americans might find uninteresting, and the US troll brigade has had the thread hijacked from the second post. Quid pro quo.
Quote
Boredom is boredom ,no matter what the subject.
Learning is learning, my friend - it can't be interesting all the time, but I force myself to undergo it in preference to holding bigoted views on the subject. Take that trip to Qatar earlier this month. I knew before I went that the capital city of Doha was just one big construction site, with rubble and roadworks everywhere. Would I ever choose Qatar as a holiday destination? Hell no. I went there because I was eager to catch a glimpse of Middle Eastern/Arab society, and was able to combine this with a visit to an old friend of some 20 years standing. The learning process is what made it interesting. If you've been reading my posts, you'll know I wasn't particularly looking forward to going. I had to be persuaded by my English friend who was already out there. At first, I didn't know how westerners would be received in an Arab country, given the amount of strife taking place in certain other Arab countries in the region. Thus, the trip became a mission of enlightenment. I could not have come away with the understanding I have now by simply reading a book, watching a TV programme, or doing what you might have done - visiting a nearby town  where some of the locals are speaking Arabic, and then pretending to have a working knowledge of the Arab world.

I don't always make trips to places because they're "interesting", but because of a thirst for knowledge. It doesn't bother me in the least if you never visit England, apart from the fact that I'd find it interesting to meet you. We are already overrun with American visitors all year round it seems. I could go out now and be back in this house within two hours having run into a whole bunch of American tourists. They're everywhere! (figuratively speaking - winks at SOB) So whereas you claim that my knowledge of the US is not workable, I have doubts about your working knowledge of your own countrymen, especially as you replied in the plural as if you were speaking on behalf of all of them, ie. "We don`t live in a vacuum". It is clear that your own views about England do not accord with those of a huge swathe of the US population as a whole, many of whom have interests/hobbies other than making holes in beer cans.

- ALL of which is off topic, but I was merely answering some points made by the original thread starter and therefore claim exemption from Rule 2!

I feel pretty humbled now that I know that people who truly thirst for knowlege spend four days in a country checking out the wine and the hotels and the views from the resteraunts.

and... if you shoot holes in cans then you are incapable of travel in any civilized manner.

I guess I have allways done it wrong by either driving to or renting a car at the country or place I was visiting...

I use the laundramats and the bed and breakfasts and the back roads... I shop at the grocery stores and drink bottled water and make sandwiches on the road...  I like to put a thousand miles on the car while I am there and maybe go to a resteraunt once a day.

It must be the wrong thing tho since.... I have never been able to fully understand all the complexities of the people or the politics by doing this as some as some are able to do with 4 days of hotel and resteraunt tourism.

Beet what you know can be measured in a thimble. What you "think" you know is unmeasurable. Don`t assume what I would do or would have done or what I do in general. You seem to miss the boat at every turn on that subject. I certainly wouldn`t visit a near by town to hear Arabic spoken or to hang with the carpet riders. It might not be pretty. If you come to the U.S. to stay, it is my belief that you should be required to speak the language here.

Quote
but because of a thirst for knowledge.

I fear at this rate you will die of thirst.

:D I refer you back to the "it might not be pretty" statement. You nearly made that mistake once. :D

Well, in proportion ,I wouldn`t say huge swathe, but for those who wish to visit there more power to them. That`s what makes this country so great. People are allowed to have different interests, hobbies, etc.
Yep, I like to make holes in beer cans with bullets, pellets and just about anything that shoots. I don`t do it as much now as I would like to or have done in the past. I miss my custom built benchrest rifle that I had in the past. Made the prettiest holes in beer cans , targets and varmints you ever did see and it put them REAL close together. :D I also like to punch holes in hay bails, targets, deer and other assorted objects with my bow and arrows.
Once again you are assuming things that you have no knowledge of. That`s not a shock. As most of us around here do, I have a lot of interests that you have no idea about. I would suggest that you refrain from making statements that causes me to spew coffee ( non-Arabic) across the monitor. For an example , you recently made a statement to the fact that I had no knowledge of light aircraft. I was flying a cropduster by the time I was 14. You might want to engage the brain before you get your fingers to flying. Just a thought.

Now, if you can just tell me what any of this has to do with the collapse at the DFW Gun Range we will be all set. :D

INSTAspert. I think it fits in more than one way. :rofl
