Title: Ask Pastor Nit-Wit?
Post by: Seagoon on March 21, 2006, 12:40:54 PM
Hi All,

Several days ago I received a message from a list member who shall remain nameless asking me if I would start an "Ask the Pastor" thread for asking and answering religious questions in the O-Club.

My initial reply to him was that it probably wouldn't be taken seriously by anyone and might end up generating more heat than light, but I promised I would ask the BB members if there was any interest in that kind of thing.

So after much sloth and foot-dragging on my part, I'm asking if there is any interest in such a thread.

heck, it could turn into ti's own sub-forum easily with the way things work here. :lol

darn near every topic eventually breaks down into something religious in some way

Why not?  They have a radio show that does pretty well, you might as well expand the concept.  Before you tie yourself to this though, can you afford the time?  If you think you can, then have at it.

Well admittedly spare time isn't something I have a lot of. So I'm guessing if I did do this, I'd have to cut down massively on my interaction on other threads. There are going to be times though when I'll be offline (for instance, I have two conferences one in April, one in May, and then a General Assembly in June where I'll be on a committee doing denominational business) and won't be able to respond quickly, but hey I should be able to still reply faster than say Microsoft or the local copier repair people (which reminds me, I have to contact the copier repair people again)

I guess if it would be profitable to others I'm willing to invest the time, if its not then I'll give it a miss.

I personally wouldn't.

When you start having serious discussions about religion it seems to bring out all the rude and obnoxious nutcases.

It's one of the reasons you don't see Kieran here or AGW anymore.

I sure wouldn't put it in the OC.

Maybe, just maybe, if Skuzzy would give you a "Religion" forum, but I sort of doubt he would.

Perhaps the best solution is "PM the Pastor".  ;)

Discussions of religion, politics, and guns just seem to never stay civil.

Guilty as charged. :(

However, I'm looking around at a Nation that has become over the course of the last 200 years an increasingly secular one. And, I have questions, concerns, worries about what it all means for our society..  the good and the bad.

One guy on TV last night actually asked the President if he thought we were facing Armegeddon fer cripes sake!

Anyway, if yah do this Seagoon, you could do the world some good; I can't see as how it could do any of us any harm.

The blessings of an agnostic be upon you; either way. :aok

skuzzy, I think you left out a few, like  women, countries, taxes, guns, Iraq, cars, guns, hunting, Saddam Hussan, guns, and guns. :D

See what I mean. (http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=173670)

It's not that people should not be passionate about how they feel.  There is a difference between being passionate and just flat out disrespectful.  A sure sign of disrespect?
When you find you have nothing positive to add to the thread, so you post to it anyway, knowing full well it serves no purpose than to piss people off.

Or worse, you have no clue that it will piss people off and you just laugh about it.

My apologies for the hijack Seagoon.  I'll get off my soapbox.

Well certainly if Skuzzy is dead-set against it, then that would be the end of the idea. As for a dedicated "religion" sub-section, that would obviously be out of place on the AH BB.

There do seem to be a lot of people in the AH community with big questions, "ultimate questions" so to speak, and not many people they know or trust who they can talk about them with. I don't know that people here necessarily trust me but after several years of posting, at least they sort of know me and hopefully know I don't mind people asking.

I'd prefer if the asking and answering was done in public whenever possible, if only to avoid reduplication of effort, because I don't really have time to answer the personal email I get already, and because you never know what might be helpful to other people (heck, sometimes neither do they, often we simply don't even know where to begin).

I suppose one of the major problems might be people simply trying (consciously or not) to get the thread locked and because the O' Club is viewed by many as a verbal furball.

Anyway, you guys decide, if there is more pro than con, for a dedicated thread I'll go with it and see whether its viable. If it's just another flame fest, I'll can it myself.

Seagoon,

It might be better if you had a forum, then you can control it.  maybe make a link in your sig called Ask the Pastor, pointed to the forum.
that way not only can it serve the few on AH, but also the general public that goes to your website provided you make a link to it there.
and some added benefits could be less trolling by the likes on this board. answers to questions from other Pastors that might post there. I can think of a lot of good reasons for you to have one.

I'm sure it would make it easier on the Skuzzman and HTC, if the religious topics were not on this board.

a couple people here on this board, could point you in the right direction to get a forum going.

I can honestly say that I thinks its a bad idea.

I have nothing against religion, but where would it stop? At what denomination?

I agree with Skuzzy. Its a hot topic that doesn't do well here, and would in a pretty short time degenerate into something else altogether.

3 things don't have a good track record here. Religion, Politics, and fat chicks in thongs on motorcycles.

Just my $0.02

Is Seagoon's religion somehow better than my religion? I'm an ordained minister too, ya know.

Yeah Seagoon, I believe it would start off as a thing to ask questions, but would soon turn into a question christianity type thing, if you catch my meaning.

I remember Seagoon saying he posts here as a member of the forums, and not as a pastor.  I think this would be a bad idea for here Seagoon, though I respect you and your calling and devotion.  I don't understand why the "nit-wit" reference in the topic title.  You think nit-wits are people who devote their lives to what they believe in?  Who are not anonymous when they post?  Maybe so, but it's not being a nit-wit in a ridiculous manner.  By that very point, you have to be restrained and make intelligent and professional posts, because everyone is watching.  It ain't fair to yourself to become official pastor in here.  You know that.

Like Rip said, tend to family.  And continue to post like you have been doing. <>

Maybe we could set up a "Rebut the Pastor" section too. Or maybe Seagoon and (the atheist of your chosing) can debate chosen issues... it would be great..

Get out the Gasoline and flares for this thread.

Seagoon I'll humor your nameless members reqeust and "Ask the Pastor."

I'll ask the same question that I received a three day suspension in my junior year back in Theology Class in H.S. (Roman Catholic by the way).

Question: If god is so all forgiving then why is there a hell?

Ok, weighing the responses, and Skuzzy's uhhhh... "lack of enthusiasm" for the project, I'll give it a miss (not to mention the prospect of more horrifying pictures like the one above). To tell the truth, I didn't think it would fly in this forum from the beginning but wanted to honor the original petition.

Les, as for the Pastor Nit Wit comment, it certainly wasn't meant to indicate that I think all Pastors are Nit-Wits, in fact it stems more from the fact that having dear friends in the ministry who are truly brilliant has allowed me to come to grips with the fact that I'm no genius and in no imminent danger of becoming one.  That said your point about not becoming "the official Pastor" in this forum is well-taken. I'm very content to remain just another poster.

En4cer, I can either answer your question in a PM or a separate thread,
I'm going to let this one die, if only so I won't have to scroll past the "McDonald's" homage anymore...

I'll have a question that's important to me if you do it.
Maybe you could just do a few now and then once you've gotten enough questions worth answering in public, sort of mailbags..

Create a thread with my handle in it and I'll reply when I can. Be aware that you are likely to get pics of large women, etc. posted as well though.
