I hope the rest of the family is OK.

Oregon family members missing 17 days found
Six disappeared March 4 in 35-foot motor home in snowy mountains

MEDFORD, Ore. - Six family members missing in a recreational vehicle since March 4 were found alive Tuesday in a remote, snowy section of Southern Oregon, authorities said.

U.S. Bureau of Land Management workers first found two of the family members, who had decided to walk out of the woods and left the vehicle, sheriff's deputies said.

Later, search and rescue workers in a helicopter made contact with the other four, said Sgt. David Marshall, spokesman for the Douglas County sheriff's department.

A snow machine was headed into the area to pick up the four, Marshall said.

A press release from the sheriff's office said the area "is not accessible by vehicle. There is a heavy snow pack."

The family of Pete Stivers, 29 and Marlo Hill-Stivers, 31, went missing while traveling in a 35-foot recreational vehicle from Ashland on March 4 across the mountains to the Oregon coast.

Also on the trip were their children Sabastyan, 9, and Gabrayell, 8, and Elbert and Becky Higginbotham of Arizona, whom police said were Pete Stivers’ mother and stepfather.

Unsuccessful searches had focused on the U.S. 199 corridor leading south from Grants Pass. The few roads across the range in the Douglas County are narrow and windy.

The recreational vehicle apparently became stranded near the line between Douglas and Curry counties, said Marshall, the Douglas County sheriff's office spokesman.

Marshall said that Pete and Marlo Hill-Stivers walked from the recreational vehicle and enountered the BLM workers Tuesday morning.

He said the vehicle apparently was on a dirt and gravel mountain road that is sometimes used as a shortcut for trips to the coast, especially in the summer.

"But it's nothing to travel in the winter, especially with the snows that have been coming through," he said.

Someone needs to tell that dude that 35 ft. RV's are not for offroad winter use (dirt road+3 feet of snow is considered "offroad").

(I think) I've gone over that road.  I was returning from bungee jumping on the Rogue River near Agness. The road cuts off about 2 hours from the drive back to the Medford area.

It is a one lane logging road and when I drove it in late spring there was still snow along the sides of the road.  I was in a VW Rabbit and the road was fun to drive, but if you encountered a logging truck be prepared to back up to a turnout.  It could be a few miles backing up.

They are idiots for going over in winter in a motorhome.

idiots for sure.  but thankfully live idiots.

not even sense enough to let someone know there route.  I've always been taught to let someone know the route you're taking when going over the passes, even on good roads.

even on the most traveled road you can hit some ice and go over the edge.  letting someone know where to start looking if you don't show up can be the difference between living or not.

I don't know the whole story but I do know I've been in heavy snowstorms and made wrong turns.

When there's snow covering everything in areas without signs and snow falling by the bucketful it's not that hard to get on the wrong road. If that turns out to be a one lane logger and the turnarounds are covered with a foot of snow you either stop and hope for the best or press on.

Nice that they didn't have to pay too high a price in any event. I'm thinking a GPS is in their future though.  ;)

When I first heard about it on the radio this morning, I thought wow over 2 weeks in the snow and cold in a car, and the dude brought his family out alive, without having to resort to cannibalism? That guy is amazing.  Then the truth of them being a buncha morons in an RV and all that, oh well glad they all made it out. Also glad that the BLM found those 2 before they turned into popsicles.

I once took the road from gold beach i think it is back inland over the mountain range so I wouln't have to back track a few hours.  got to the top of the range and the paved road became gravel. My cell phone battery exhausted and I took my last drink of water.  I was driving a rental compact car when I should have been in a off road vehicle.  Fortunately I made it back to civilization. Funny thing, at the top of the mountains there was a tree with a million pairs of shoes in it.

Would you have driven over it in a 35' motorhome? In friggen winter?

That being said, if you were one of those stuck in that situation, who would you eat first?  I would think it would have to be the grandparents if you are looking to extend the family line, but ....
