Got my rig together, powered up, and all went without a hitch. NOT!!!!!! Finally got everything working, but went to install windows xp and it it gave and error. I think i know what wrong but I need to erase the partial install and start from scratch. As it is now i cant get to safe mode or anywhere else except bios. No matter what I do, windows always starts to load and at the point where it continues setup after restart, says a file is missing.
Any help appreiciated

In the bios , set the first boot device to CDROM. Then put your XP disk in the drive if its not already in there and restart . It will ask PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT TO CD...... hit any key and start the install over . I would prolly delete any partitions and format the drive again before reinstalling thou . GL

Heya WhiteHawk,
since I have fought this same issue for last 2 days, trying to reload WinXP on me mom's comp........ ( btw it is up and running again, finally)
I suggest not to do the quick NTFS format, do the FULL NTFS formatting, takes longer but may have less problems down the road.......
if you keep getting the missing file or file will not copy....I have had this happen on 3 different WinXP install disc, sometimes same file, sometimes different file.....
well, 1st thing found out 1 bad ide cable to the CDRW/CD-Rom
next found 1 stick of 512 mem was bad.........so switched out cable & pulled out 1 stick( the bad one ) of the mem and everything loaded fine........
before the findings, I tried 6 different CDroms, DVD-roms, DVDRWs etc.....
Good Luck......( got 1 1/2 days of vacation left, heh, to load up all her software and fix Dad's PC, ROFL )

Very important if the authentication on the MS end asks you to call the telephone # for activation - NEVER say you switched the MB b/c in their eyes, they will say "Oh well, that is a new computer - buy another copy." ONLY say you put in a new HD during an upgrade and it prompted you to manually activate.
-
I've said I switched the MB and still got a new activation code. The day they stop doing so I go back to using pirate versions.
-
Supposedly Windows XP Pro Corporate (or is it just "XP Corporate"?) allows you to bypass the activation process.
Next time I have to, I'll look into getting that version. However, my XP Pro has served me well for many a year, and I'll not switch to Vista anytime soon, so I'm glad when you activate online it's not a problem at all.

thnx guys, im using my old copy now and i got 30 days to decide what to do.
-
well, I just ordered a oem copy from newegg at 90 bucks. I dont mess with the IRS or Microsoft.

Would have been a lot cheaper to make the phonecall and find out first.

My original copy of XP home (retail) has gone through 4 motherboards , 3 harddrives , 4 cpu's and ive never had to buy another copy or license. If your just using it on one pc i dont think they'll give you any trouble, ive talked to atleast 15 people that have done the same without issue .

I installed XP Pro when I built my wifes machine.
then used the same instalattion disk when I installed it on my old P500 for my son to use.
When I called to activate for my sons machine they asked how many computers have I installed this on I actually was honest and said 2, this one being the second.
The chick on the phone said "ok"
And I was good to go
Does that make me 17?
