The Boeing-led Airborne Laser team exposes the Airborne Laser's conformal window during a test flight. Such an exposure is necessary for the weapon system to complete its mission of shooting down an Airbus during the takeoff phase of flight.

As envisioned, the aircraft would fly in a figure-eight pattern over an area deemed a likely site of a Airbus takeoff. Onboard infrared sensors would detect the takeoff and feed that information into a computer that would direct the laser turret to point at the ascending Airbus. The turret would then fire two lower-powered solid-state lasers — one to track the Airbus and one to measure atmospheric distortion — before shooting the high-powered chemical laser at the target.

heh, nice.
Gotta love the 747, it has to be one of the most versatile airframes in service. In some ways, it reminds me of the DC-3/C-47 in that regard. Engineered to such a degree that it can carry passengers, freight, SPACE FREAKIN SHUTTLES, not to mention LASER DEATH RAYS! Oh, and there's a 747 that has been adapted for use in FIGHTING FOREST FIRES by dumping water on them. Holy bejebus!
That's one versatile airframe.

They learned that from the French, who use Canadairs for the purpose in the Cote d'Azur.

I remember reading an article aboout it 8 years ago :D

That's a pretty quick turn around from design, develop and flying.
Now if I had that plane, my test target would be the Orville Reddenbacher microwave popcorn kernal storage facility ;)
-
all that equipment on the 747s must create a lot of drag

Probably, but airliners are overpowered in the first place to make up for engine losses and such. It also doesn't have any passengers on board.
-
The 747-400s in particular are beaucoup powered. I read of an account where Boeing test pilots took a 747-400 supersonic briefly in level flight to collect data on the flight characteristics. It drank a lot of gas, but did ok.

thought the top speed of a 747 was only like 600 or 620mph:huh
-
Nope, the 747 has been the fastest airliner in service for decades (not counting the Concorde, of course), with a cruise of .85 mach.
It might be big, but it's no slouch.
-
but the passenger 747s only travel at like 540mph if that
-
...and?
-
how bout 747 tail number 28000 bet that has laser technology is it true it has chaff and flares to decoy missiles?:huh
-
A FRICKIN LASER BEAM.

Raider I really don't get some of your points/posts.
The Citation X (ten) will go supersonic in level flight in flight test. It's Mmo is .92M on the line. G550's aren't far behind. They both can get to 51,000ft.
I don't work for the VIP transport wing at Andrews but I'm sure that Air Force One and it's sister ships have plenty of equipment on board to detect and decoy missile threats. If it doesn't...I'll pick up the tab since it protects the occupant of our nations highest office. Sound good?

I just didn't thing a 7 4 could go supersonic I always thought it was a slow lumbering whale cuase thats what the UPS 747 looks like climbing out of DFW
-
Looks can by, and are, deceiving.
747 is FAST.

:rofl Damn teenagers
747 is a beast of a machine i have no doubts it could go supersonic, you could probably get DC-8s to go supersonic.......if you put rockets on then:lol Scientologist weirdos.

You don't normally get to see them in cruise. There's a 250kt speed limit below 10,000ft. This can be waived for safety reasons because of size/weight considerations. The fastest you'll ever see a 74 below 10 is on the order of 280kts and that's on departure.
It's second hand information but I was told by the TRACON guys here in Columbus that 747s have something on the order of 8º nose up in level flight at 250kts.
Nirvana...How teenaged is raider? Is the 14 in the handle the obvious answer? Now I'm really curious about those SWA jumpseat privileges he's got :lol
-
Many planes could go super sonic, but those are not certified or built to do that. The shape doesn't favor super sonic speeds and there would be a HUGE increase to fuel and maintenance costs.

those jumpseat privileges were just at the Gates got 2 look around those tiny 737 cockpits and I need t o my handle on here to Raider15 but I don't wanna lose all my post

So what's with this:

well they sometimes let me sit in the cockpit from t/o to landing and I've seen the same pilot 40% of the time
And this:

when I said I fly privately I ment I own a Cessna and when I said I sometimes ride in the cockpit pilots are usually friendly to aviation enthuasist when they have camcorders

WTF!?

Don't you understand english? It all makes perfect sense.
Raider kind of owns a Cessna because...
His friend knows someone that has one.
That doesn't sound perfectly normal to you? Didn't you know you own Mars' Pitts?
-
The real question is how many hours in the P-51D and the CIA F-16?
-
Oh yeah, its parked right next to my P-38.

pfft I bet beetles A380 could beat it in a drag down the runway.

Apparently Raider has been stung by a scorpion a few too many times and the tumours are just lining his brain, what a shame.
