Title: Lazs - another movie recommendation
Post by: beet1e on March 31, 2006, 12:14:53 PM
Looks like Ripsnort was right. The current climate change and global warming is playing havoc with our movie choices. You've been watching namby pamby Brit movies, and I've been watching manly John Wayne movies. "Sands of Iwo Jima" came today, and I'm about to watch it. And last night I saw one you'd like - "Lord of War", starring Nicholas Cage, about an arms dealer. Lots of guns, lots of shooting, and therefore lots of lives being saved... right up your street, once the globe starts cooling again.

Until then, I thought I'd recommend "Kind Hearts and Coronets" (1949 - the year you were born?) starring Alec Guinness. I know you like Alec Guinness, and black guys who sound like him, and in this movie he has eight different parts! And... there's even some gun violence in it. Near the end, Louis Mazzini shoots the 8th Duke of Chalfont (Guinness) with a shotgun.

I'll post back later to let you know how Sands of Iwo Jima went...

That's a GREAT movie.

Just curious are you sure it was "lord of the gun"?

I know they sometimes change a title for European release but here it's called "Lord of War"  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0399295/

All in all, Lord of War was okay... 3/5 stars, IMHO. It has something even more irritating than Cage... Ethan Hawke.

If they both die then it's a good movie.

Here's one for y'all. The Boondock Saints (http://www.theboondocksaints.com/). Stars Sean Patrick Flannery, Norman Reedus, David Della Rocco, Billy Connolly, and Willem Dafoe. A pair of Irish guys turn vigilante. They're pursued by Willem Dafoe's character Paul Smecker, a crossdressing, homosexual FBI agent, who secretly wishes he could join them.

AFAIK, there's a sequel on the way.

The first one was okay. I didn't care for the ending.

I have avoided lord of war because it is a cage movie and he really annoys me beyond any redemption.

Boondock saints is one of my favorite movies I own a copy.... Along that line...  True Romance is good too.

Another good movie is "Dust".

Way of the Gun was very good too.

beet... did you see lock stock and two smoking barrels?

Lazs I've seen you mention this before, did you like it? what about Snatch?

personally I even had to turn on subtitles on lock stock, and it just wasn't as good as snatch in my opinion

snatch was good but for me...It doesn't pass the test of time... seen it once and that was enough...

I watch all british movies with english subtitles on.   There are some real stinkers out there so ya got to be careful with brit movies.

I think I started watching it once, but couldn't get into it at the time - possibly because something else was going on. Friends here say it was very good...

Sands of Iwo Jima was.... ok I suppose, but quite a few scenes were too drawn out, considering their (ir)relevance.

The best John Wayne movie I saw was the one where he's captain of a warship, hunting down a German submarine. The captains of the two vessels have to out think/out manoeuvre each other. The sub ends up surfacing right below the ship and I think both vessels have to be abandoned! But I can't find this movie in IMDB, and I don't remember the title.

Beetle, the movie you are thinking of is entitled "The Enemy Below" and stars Robert Mitchum, not John Wayne.  Curt Jurgens played the part of the U-Boat captain.

That's it! That's the chappie! Curt Jurgens. No wonder I couldn't find it, looking under John Wayne. :)

Beetle, "The Enemy Below" inspired one of the best Star Trek episodes of all time.  Episode 9 of Season 1 was entitled "Balance of Terror" and the story was the first to feature the Romulans.

Kirk has to match wits with a noble and dangerous Romulan commander, played by Mark Lenard, whose ship attacks Federation outposts stationed along the neutral zone.

In my opinion, this is one of the top 100 tv episodes of all time, with solid performances by all the actors involved.

Wayne made some decent war movies but his best were always the westerns,

"She War a Yellow Ribbon"- "Never apologise, its a sign of weakness"

"The Cowboys"- "big talk dont make a big man"

"McLintock"-"I was called that once. Looked it up in the dictionary... Best you don't know what it means."

"Big Jake" - James McCandles:" I am moved by your faith in someone you haven't seen since he was sixteen years old, Daddy!
Jacob 'Big Jake' McCandles: Daddy?
James McCandles: Daddy.
Jacob 'Big Jake' McCandles: Well, son; since you don't have any respect for your elders, it's time somebody taught you some respect for your betters!
[grabs James and throws him into a mud puddle]
James McCandles: Why, if you weren't my father...
Jacob 'Big Jake' McCandles: Go ahead. I give you leave.
[James swings and misses, Jake hits him and knocks him back into the puddle]
Jacob 'Big Jake' McCandles: You can call me Dad, you can call me Father, you can call me Jacob and you can call me Jake. You can call me a dirty old son-of-a-*****, but if you EVER call me Daddy again, I'll finish this fight.

And "Jacob 'Big Jake' McCandles: And now you understand. Anything goes wrong, anything at all... your fault, my fault, nobody's fault... it won't matter - I'm gonna blow your head off. No matter what else happens, no matter who gets killed I'm gonna blow your head off."
