Title: I Hang my Head in Shame
Post by: midnight Target on March 31, 2006, 04:25:45 PM
I held out for 5 years! But I have been sucked in this year. The evil crack known as American Idol has invaded my house. Sure I said to my wife... I'll try it out, just this once. But then it led to, "so what's on tonight? nothing? well we might as well watch Idol". Then the insidious DVR crept in and ... now I've got the jones. I hate them ... must watch ... but I hate them.

gggaaaaaa!

i was the same way with CSI (the original las vegas)...

then spike tv did reruns every day when i got home from work...

then i the local affiliate stopped showing seinfeld @ 6...

then i started watching the multiple shows on friday nights on spike...

i still won't watch the other ones, it is just the cast of the original that sucked me in :furious

MT,

I did a post last year about Idol and got basically flamed for it.  The turning point for me was last year when there was actually some diversity (singing not ethnicity) in the compitition.

Last year had some good rock singers, Bo Bice being one.  This year there's also som GREAT singers and it isn't all the bubblegum pop crap that you hear on the radio anymore.

I am not ashamed to admit that I AM an idol fan at all.  There's alot of contestants this year that I am rooting for.

Nope I have DirecTV with TIVO  I can watch what I choose when I choose to and skip through the commercials at whim.  I am no longer a slave to my TV.  The computer is another story.

Overall for voice and looks: Catherine (long dark hair, sexy)

Fav guy: probably Elliot (the guy Paula called 'funky white guy')

American Idol is a gateway show. You will be mainlining Queer Eye for the Straight Guy before long. Stop TV abuse before it starts!

I think Mandisa is channeling Aretha... That girl can flat sing and everyone else is just in it for the looks.

Oh my god... now I have to go do something manly like buy a gun or spit. That should help.

When does that show come on anyway?  My girlfriend watches it, but sometimes it is on all night, other times it is just a half hour... it comes on at different days some weeks.. kinda confusing.

I only like watching the first couple shows where they have all the people that can't sing but think they can.  THAT is good TV :).

Guns, when you and MT are picking out a place to settle down, I think California will be more tolerant of your lifestyle than Texas will be.  I hope you both live happily ever after!  ;) (err, the wink wasn't meant that way, so don't get any wrong ideas.  I mean, not that there's anything wrong with that!)

Reality TV is one of the reasons I don't watch broadcast television at all anymore. The other reason is that the news was becoming even less realistic.

So... just in case people felt they shouldn't taunt here:

The only thing gayer than watching reality TV is going to the internet and talking about watching it.

Fret not. I had never watched Idol before last season. My wife and I watched most of those. This season, we haven't watched at all.

You can break away clean.

FWIW, we used to watch Survivor all the time. I was rather surpised to discover just yesterday that there has been a new season running for the past two months.

TiVo changes everything.

I check it out on and off but cant say Im a fan. Some decent stuff on it sometimes but I just want it to be over so it stops interfering with the airing of "House"

Now THATS a show

Damn, Bo Bice had the best perfomance I'd ever seen on AI when in the semi final he sang his song acapella style. He blew it in the finals.

I haven't watched AI this season or the very first one though.

If you dont believe looks have anything to do with selling records I have only one name for ya Brittney Spears.

As far as the Judges go LOL the head mouth Simon is still slamming Carrie Underwood and the girl has a triple platinuim album out and is up for multiple
CMA awards.

I like the dude with the grey hair.  He's got soul.  Mandisa is good.  I like the white chick with the long brown hair as well, I think she's gonna be a sleeper this year.  Paris is a hoot as well.

You may have the right idea... I allsways felt that soap operas and girly movies were things my wife/s could watch and not bother me while I did something enjoyable...

I don't miss em tho.

Hey...I didn't know you guys got SurvivorMan. That's a great show. Learned tons of stuff from watching Les Stroud. He's from Mississauga (west suburb of TO)
Do you remember the episode where he is left in the desert? Was very impressed how he recognized different things he could eat and the cactus that he showed how to get a 'needle and thread' from? Amazing.
I think my favourite was when he was abandoned in Northern Ontario in the fall. I think that's the one where he almost loses it. Actually they are all very good episodes.

We watch it unless I feel like flying that night. Its one of those shows that I try to watch with my wife. This week I didnt watch and she said it was terrible. Im just glad they dont have 50% of the show filming them at home complaining about eachothers habits, and how they put crumbs in the peanut butter jar, like so many other shows do.

Survivorman isn't a contestant on a game show. He is alone. He goes out into the wilderness with a couple of cameras. There are no other people with him.

You make it sound like people are born with the knowledge of how to know where to find water in the desert; what plants to eat; what plants not to eat how to make fire without matches and all the other things that go along with survival skills.
Making that comment makes me think you have never seen this show. The only people that would know much about what Stroud is speaking would be people who have trained and studied survival techniques.
Tell me Mac, how often do you or have you gone into the wilderness for a week at a time with no food or water no matches or lighter and no humans within hundreds of miles of you? Usually the only thing he has on him is a single multi-tool.
I've seen him survive in places like Death Valley, Biyou in Louisianna, mountain top in B.C., in the arctic (only a couple hundred miles from the pole), tropical rain forest in Central America, ancient forests in Northern Ontario in the fall where it rained for 7 days straight etc.
Give the show a look sometime...I bet you'd like it.
