Title: REQUEST: Buff Gun Tracking
Post by: 96Delta on April 01, 2006, 05:55:24 PM
Here I am, in a bomber minding my own business
last night when out of the blue comes this Me163.

Now, this 163 wasn't there to say hi..he wanted to
hurt me . . . .like I ever did anything to him.
Of all the nerve..

Anyways, as I'm jumping from gun position to gun
position I got quite annoyed that I had to track
all over the sky to re-aquire this unwelcome suitor.
Needless to say that such a condition put me at a
severe disadvantage.. . .  and I died.

I assume that bombers are theoretically manned
by a complete crew and that jumping into a gun
position in effect is replacing a gunner who is already
there with a 'live' person.

Gunners in bombers weren't just sleeping at their
positions.  They were actively scanning and tracking targets
waiting for them to attack or enter their effective
firing range.

Why then, when the pilot jumps into a gun position,
does he have to twist and twirl to find a target that
the crew gunner would have been tracking anyway?

My idea is that, when you enter a gun position while
piloting a Buf...or when you change positions either as a
gunner or pilot...that the guns should be trained on the
closest enemy contact, mimicing the fact that the
crewman formerly in that position would be doing just that.

The gun shouldn't be pointed in some obscure direction that
is more representative of a vacant gun position being occupied
for the first time or the replacement of a dead crew member.

When you jump into a gun position while piloting a buf,
the guns should be pointed at the nearest enemy contact.
Once you occupy the position, the 'lock' would be released
and the gunner would have to manually track the target.
This would be far more realistic than how it is now...

Do bombers have only 1 crew member that
runs from the bomb bay back to the pilots position
and then to one of the gun positions?  That would
make for one exhausted pilot!  Or are they fully crewed
in theory.

Now I'm not asking for automatic guns...just that the
guns be pointed at the enemy when the position is
initially occupied.  Is that possible?

Just a thought.  I hope I got this idea across well.

Now, let the well-reasoned and courteous discussion
begin. :D

I thought your suggestion already happens. Maybe you are only firing the gun that you are actually manning. Perhaps if you fire them all together you'll find the other guns are already pointing the right way.

I think that's the way it works for me. I dunno. Maybe not.

Somebody will tell us.

Normally the gun seems to point where I was last shooting. Might nto take effect until you fire off a burst? Not sure.

:rofl

Just work on your SA a bit. If he's coming in from your right when you are the pilot. When you jump to the tail, go left:aok

Say you're in gun position 2 and you swivel it all over the place without taking a shot.  If you hop to gun position 3, that gun will be pointed in an entirely different direction.  If, on the other hand, you had fired gun 2 before leaving it, you would find all guns pointed in the direction gun 2 had been fired in.  At least as much as their individual ranges of movement allow.  The above is for an all guns firing scenario.  I'm not sure if it happens when you only fire the gun you're in.

Situational Awareness (SA) in bombers is the better than that possible in any other aircraft in the game.  Next time you're in a gun position, go to F3 (external view), swivel the gun and see the world revealed.

I don't think your other suggestions will be implemented given the already excellent SA available in bombers.

The guns all point in the direction of the gun you are using.  If you jump into a gun that can't see the target, the next gun will be facing the same wrong direction.  Check it out in a B17.  If you go to the right waist gun and look down the right wing, then go to the top gun, you will be looking down the right wing.  Now go to we left waist gun and back to the top gun.  You will be pointed left.

A few tips:

Don't jump to waist guns :)

Use the guns with the best coverage.  Example, a B17, use the top and ball.  You can track just about anything by jumping to only 2 guns.  You can fire all the guns from these positions.

Use the F3 view from the exterior.  Point in the direction of the enemy, then jump to the gun (F1) , it will be pointing right at the target.  This exterior view is allowed in bombers because it gives you a better gunner view, like all your gunners are calling out targets.

We had it when AH was in Beta.  When buffs first came out, they had auto guns.  Buff guns are deadly enough when someone is gunning.
