I dont know if this is interesting to anyone, but I write this any way.
I broke my "new" MOBO again, and have to temporary use a 5 year old MOBO with 1.4GHz Athlon and 512MB 133 RAM.
So the PC is exactly the same exept for the memory and CPU.
AMD Athlon 2800XP -> AMD Athlon 1.4GHz
512 MB "400 MHz" RAM -> 512 MB "133 MHz" RAM
The video card is GF FX 9500 ultra with 256MB.
I use 128 size textures.
Framerates went down to ~25FPS from ~60FPS
The worst times in the game, frames drop below 10 FPS.
I thought the video card had a bigger roll.
Now I am going to test, if I get the same frame rates with an older GeForce card. GF 4200Ti with 256MB.
Back to the 90's :)

The video card is waiting for information from the cpu . If the cpu cant get that info to it fast enough it wouldnt matter if you had my 7800GT in that system , the framerate would prolly be the same.
Your regular rig with the with the 2800XP is a pretty close match for that 5900. But even there i would still say your cpu limited . A year and a half i went from an XP 3200 with a 9800pro ( which if i remember right is equal to a 5900) to a Amd64 3400+with the same card and saw a 10-12 FPS increase . Is this going to be the 3rd board for that 2800? man thats bad luck . Hope your luck changes 8) 38
HEHE BTW the first system i ever built was a 1.4tbird DDR 266fsb system with the first radeon video card they made . Think it was a Radeon DDR 64 VIVO . I remember putting that together and saying MAN this thing is so fast , I wont have to upgrade for atleast five years heheh.

1.4GHz Athlon and 512MB 133 RAM.
the 133 sdRam and the 1.4 is holding ya up big time
Id look for a close out or ebay ect sale on somethine equal to 38's and my... asus a7n8x-e / dlx and a 2500+ barton combo .. there around 100.00 right now with a 2400/2500 cpu . add 1 gig of 3200 ddr (70-85.00) and you should have 85+ fps again or a little less running the hires pack .
