Hope no more of my neighbors to the North are injured.

Thanks for the concern BlueJ1. I live only 2 lights east from that intersection. I was walking to a department store on the same block as that Tim Horton's and saw a helicopter overhead. I figured it may be heavy traffic or something. Never expected to find out that the Tim Horton's I go to was bombed.

So far it looks like a sucide bomber may have blown up (probably by accident) If that's true, what was the intended target? If it was a suicide bomber I think this may be the "first" in North America.

Hope he just blew himself up and nothing else.

Did you read the article Raider?  They don't ave all the details.  Pfft noob, you can't call something a suicide until you have all the evidence, that's how people get pissed off at police officers.

cops are now confirming it was not a terrorist strike...(11 o'clock news)

dead guy ignited something that caused the blast...possibly a suicide (seems an odd way to it imo) They said some kind of device was used.

CBC said more news as it becomes available

who commits suicide by 'sploding themselves in a public restroom? I mean just cause the cops recovered enough of his head to see he wasnt a real terrorist, does not mean he isnt some homegrown canadian kook. My guess is last minute bomb adjustment gone awry.

Goth, why jump to conclusion before you have the facts?

Every fire, explosion, bus crash, train wreck, liqour store robbery and soiled diaper isn't automatically a "terrorist plot".

And before you get on with the Canada bashing, one of my nephews is currently in Afghanistan and I am extremely Proud of him (although I worry about him all the time as well).

Have some respect please.

The article was rather specific. A so far unknown man went into the restroom with a container of gasoline. Another patron went into the restroom smelled a strong odor of gasoline and left immediately. Right after that the gas was ignited. The resultant fire also brought down part of the ceiling on the guy.

They were very adamant in the article that the investigators had ruled out the presence of a bomb or suicide bomber like in the ME. No explosion, no injuries other than to the guy in the restroom and a lot of quotes from people who are simply doing a lot of guessing and speculating that are not involved in the incident. Including that makes for more inches of article and adds nothing of substance.

For the few from Canada that serve willingly, of course I have respect.  I will definitely never have respect for anyone who takes their life.

Btw, that's the first time I was ever edited by a mod for flamebaiting. I usually don't do that and in retrospect I can see how it was taken that way, but in all honesty it was meant as simple ribbing.

Being that I served in the millitary, and have quite a few friends in Afghan amd Iraq, I would agree that your worry is not unreasoned. However, even if you were over there, there is nothing you can do for your nephew. It will be important for you to understand what he goes through and support him be it mentally or physically.

It's funny, I remember how proud I made my parents feel when I joined. It was probably the first thing I did right in my adult life. As time went by, I grew to realize what type of impact my service was having on family, friends, girlfriends, whatever. It's easy to say "Ah, don't worry bout me", but it's hard to change the reality that they did, just as you are. Hopefully, if he's been in the military long enough, he has made his peace with whoever or whatever. Comfort yourself in the fact that he's serving with a professional organization, and not some fly by night merc group ala Blackwater. Unnecessary risks will not be taken, accidents can happen, but he is as safe as can be knowing the situation. Hell, I think he has a better chance over there than he would in Louisiana traffic right now. :O
