That's about as close to a Darwin Award as you can get. That would have been one hell of a launch ...

Yanno when I read your comment.
And before I clicked the link I thought to myself half sarcastically
"Ok now what would be the next step? Being launched into the air by slingshot like the toys they sell in the corner store?"
naaaa
So I click on the link, waiting to see what new realm of lunacy has some idiot decided to venture into now.
And low and behold.
Next step I predict. They combine parachuting with those huge arse model rockets.
OR jumping from a speeding pickup truck going over a bridge

I saw a show on TV where some guy modded a military steam catapult with a padded seat, and he launched himself off of a huge cliff. The plan was to ride the catapult off the cliff and parachute into the ocean near some boats or if he found lift, glide to the beach.
Despite a lot of padding, finding a good sitting position and wearing some protective gear, the launch fractured his back and neck in a few places so he was instantly in nearly crippling pain before he left the seat. He managed to get his chute open but glided straight ahead and had to be pulled out of the water then carried to an ambulance.
If he'd had any brains, he would have first requested the ejection and acceleration test data done on humans by NASA, the USAF, and other research labs, and discovered that the accelerations he was going to experience were high enough to cause severe injuries. But reading a book and cancelling the cat shot would have made for a boring tv show, so...

that has got to be one of the stupidest things i have ever seen a human being do. :O

I'm wondering how many Gs at the launch. That couldn't have been comfortable.

About as many as catching a fully loaded truck to your trunk at traffic lights :D

Next thing you know they strap jet engines to a Birdman suit.

The BASE jumpers I know are far from stupid. They tend to want to push the envelope a bit and they're very well aware of the risks involved. Their risk tolerance are much higher than that of an average person. These people are project managers, senior software developers and what have you - not your average pot smoking hey-look-at-me! types.
But yeah, thrill seekers for sure. And we bloody well need thrill seekers, because it's such people who break the status quo and bring our collective butts forward. Some BASE jump, others become fighter pilots, special forces soldiers, execs at big companies, scientists. The need to push it manifests itself differently but there's a driving force behind it.
Oh and yeah jumping from trucks/cars/golf carts going over a bridge is not pushing the edge anymore. I'm sure they'll come up with something hnew though :aok
