A radio broadcast brought these proposed changes in French immigration policy to my attention this week:
1. Residency permits required of all French citizens.
2. Do away with a provision allowing foreigners living in the country for 10 years, even those in the country illegally, to apply for full citizenship and all its "benefits."
3. Establish a renewable 3-year-work permit for highly skilled foreign workers.
4. Require those foreigners applying for long-term-residency permits to attend French language and civics classes.
5. Make obtaining 10-year-residency permits contingent on speaking French and respecting of the "values of the French republic."
Wow. The French government is ticking everybody off these days...repudiating laws that have favored immigrants and young workers.
This appears to be a watershed period for the French government, which has prided itself on its political correctness in the past.

I'm curious about #1, don't like parts of #2 (those who entered legally), and don't like the latter part of #5.
I think #3 and #4 are perfectly acceptable and should probably be used here.

Anyone remember that thread we had a few years ago about the high percentage of immigrants in France (2nd at that time of posting) may have negative impacts in the future? ;)

im guessing that does not apply to those people who are citizens of countries in the european union.

They're trying to protect themselves from invasion. They see the problems in their country, and they see how the US is being overrun by illegal mexican immigrants, so why should anyone be suprised they want to do something to keep their country from being run into the ground?
If only the US congress had the courage to do their job instead of postponing action out of fear of what making a decision might do at the polls...

The point is that there is a serious problem and the governments are terrified of doing ANYTHING. But in the US, the govt isn't afraid of what will happen to the country, they're afraid of what will happen to their re-election chances.

I dont think they see the problem the US has, but other European countries like Denmark and so forth who are being overrun with the Muslims.

Actually from what I've seen.
Congress isnt doing anything meaningful not because of the polls but in spite of them
Then again. it may depend on who you ask

The rate that france is being invaded by legal and illegal immigrants far exceeds our own rates.
In fact, we should take them as an example of what could happen.
