just installed AVAST to keep my PC safe from what i am about to do....
buddies system has a bugger of a problem. winlogon, services, lsass, userinit, and explorer have all failed to start because ole32.dll was not found.
bastard of a problem, and i am going to re-format their HD from scratch....
anyway, they have 1000's of digital camera pisc on the HD that need to be saved. i am going to put their HD in my PC and grab the pics, and a few PDF's like tax info.
you think AVAST will keep my PC safe if they have a virus?
-
Yes, your puter will be safe as long as you don't boot from their HD. Also do not run any executables on their HD and make sure you only copy archive files from their HD (pictures, music etc.). E-mails you should be careful with.
-
Unless you specifically run a file/program from that hard drive it can not infect your computer. Just make sure you have a nice updated antivirus program installed just in case you do run something on accident and you are fine.
I recommend:

if your running XP, boot up in safe mode, select the administrator account, and you should be able to modify the access rights through there.

Linux live-on CD is your friend...

If their pictures are important, you should stop now and take it to somebody who knows what they're doing.

If you log on as the administrator (or if your user account has admin rights) you can simply right-click on the directory in question and select the "security" tab. In the "advanced" section you can take ownership of the files, giving you access to them.

Hey Dave
I recommend using program if you can't get them.
http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/download.htm
It's not a user friendly program, but it works for getting files off of drives that are no longer readable, which is not what your situation is, but you should be able to do a *.jpg search, or whatever format their pictures are in and pull them over. Usually by doing this, you can get around security settings.
I am assuming that their drive is in your computer and slaved to your master.

Hook their hard drive up as the slave drive, and make sure that your antivirus is running and protection the slave hard drive too.

I had the same problem (and the same panic) when I wiped my C drive. As stated above, you can boot up as admin and take control of that folder.

yup, all taken care of. admin, owned the whole HD, got the files, re-formatted their HD , installed and all is hunky-dory.
thats for the tips all

Good, for future reference use NOD32 antivirus and Sygate personal firewall, they keep out 99.9% of all the bad stuff.
