:D
Spent Saturday on the Grass Valley Trail. This shot was taken on the Cuddeback Dry Lake.
Here's the track from the GPS.
Google Earth (http://dotdoubledot.com/backcountry/desert22/Desert22_GrassValleyTrail-driven.kmz)

You still got that thing? Aren't you worried about carbon monoxide and hyrocarbon emmissions and global warming and using all that petrol that makes us Americans look selfish?? Huh, huh???
BTW, are you still doing that treasure hunt thing through the desert? That always seemed cool. Not much desert in east Tejas though.
-
I don't worry overmuch. :)
...and yeah, we were geocaching. Found seven caches and some incredible scenery. Especially the eastern part of the loop.
Here's some other pics...
Cuddeback Lake from the south:

^^Thanks Woodrow.
Really nice pics there Sand, love the desert. When we fled the hurricane last year it gave me an excuse to drive all the way to El Paso. My fave part of North Mexico!

Nice color. :)

Thank you. Here's some more... older shots mostly in the El Paso Mountains, all within 20 miles of home:

Yup, more nice shots. I really, really wish I was closer to the desert. These hurricanes really are getting under my skin.
Also, that "technically" isn't a truck, at least it wouldn't be here in North Mexico. Here a truck is a cowboy cadillac.

Technically, I have everything this does, except the body and the bed. Same engine, same drive line, same chassis, same cockpit, etc.

;)
There's quite a few large trucks like that around here. I just can't figure out where they take 'em. Most of the trails get pretty narrow.
-
My situation is that I have been driving a Camaro/Firebird/GTO for the last 25 years. I just can't get into the SUV/Truck thing. Well, I could if I were closer to the desert. Just a sports car kinda nut ya know?
-
I bought an 85 Bronco in 1992 and I've been into SUVs ever since. The biggest reason I avoided pickups was the registration fees. It costs more for tags on a 1/2 ton pickup than it does a full size Surburban. California charges according to gross weight.
-
I love my truck too.

Im too lazy to resize them.
-
It could use a wash. ;)
-
I've driven my Buick through worse terrain than that.
That said, the Xterra (dumb name notwithstanding) is a fairly capable offroad vehicle. It won't fall apart after a lot of hard off-road driving like a lot of other SUV's (or a Buick) would. Sandman's gets credit for having a spade on the roofrack instead of some dumb yuppie thing like a kayak or something.
Oh, and roll your friggin windows down.

LOL. Lake beds are dusty.

Nice SUV Sandy. Still waiting to see your truck though.

There are two types of trucks. SUVs and Pickups. Hell, when I was a kid, pickups were trucks and so were Surburbans and Broncos. We didn't call 'em SUVs. Of course, some SUVs today are based upon cars so they're not trucks. Hence the confusion. ;)
...but just to illustrate that it's not just me, I offer these links.

Great pics Sandy!
Who owns that white car and why is he following you? Did the NSA finally sniff you out? ;)
-
That white "car" is a 2005 Xterra. ;) It's the 2nd generation design. Looks a bit different than my 2000.
The guy that owns it has a pretty cool website (http://xsnoopy.net/main.html).
-
He still looks fishy to me. Just look at the way he doesnt get out of the car. I dont think he is who is says he is.
Do you really think he chose the NiSsAn because he thought it was a good car?
-
I got a neighbor who drives a xterra.
Last year he was caught using it to sell stolen xmas trees door to door.
(I dont live in CA & his is green)
Every time I go out of town I wonder if he gonna break into my joint & take stuff.
Sometimes I think about murdering him, but instead I upped my insurance a bit.
-
Sandman; that's not a truck. It's a 4WD SUV :p
Now this (http://www.kolumbus.fi/staga/gaz66/02082005001.jpg) is a 4wd Truck. Not mine, thought, but my friend's.
-
What you need is one of these.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/downloads/hilux_broadband.ram
-
When it comes to trucks, I've always thought there are pickup trucks and there are closed bed/passenger trucks - your SUV trucks. They're all trucks. They're built on the same frame. They usually have solid rear axles, and can accept 4wd systems.
If its an SUV based on a car, it isn't a truck anymore. Look under the rear end; if you see skinny little rear independent suspension arms, that's a grocery-getting pansymobile. :)
-
They build these bad boys 10 miles from my house.
Now THAT'S a truck!

From someone who lives on the east coast, I'm amazed at the wide open space and lack of urban sprawl.
Nice pics.

Thanks.
Lack of water tends to inhibit urban sprawl around here. That and the fact that most of the land surrounding Ridgecrest belongs to the public.

Here is my truck, and yes it's a real pick-up truck with an 8' bed and diesel power as "real" trucks should be. Oh and it's in the middle of getting a repower with a Cummins 12v, and I have a sporty car too.

My brother-in-law and I drove Trona Pinnacles Trail (http://www.dotdoubledot.com/backcountry/desert23/Desert23_TronaPinnaclesTrail-driven.kmz) yesterday. Driving past the Summit Range was just spectacular.

That trail looks like a lot more fun to drive on than the previous one.

You’re also too lazy to buy some new rear tires. 55 mph in rain on a corner and that thing is going around!

You have a good eye eskimo. However, that is an old picture. They have been changed since then. When I get home, I'll take a new one. Also, the front bumper I ordered came in and I have put it on since then also.

It's probably illegal to have the steering wheel on the left side where he lives.

I drive it and love it. It's a huge truck and gobbles up lots of gas. Gas isn't expensive here, it's expensive in europe.

Well, I suggest you have a look around this board! There are MANY gas price whine threads to be found, all originating in America. Enjoy your house... er, I mean your truck, while you can. Will you keep it when gas costs $15/gallon? It won't be worth much then - tick-tick-tick-tick....
-
Beet
Come to Az and I'll take you for a ride in my house. I got the V-10 version because the emblem looks cool. Also, the 20 inch wheels and the lift make the truck look a little better.
If gas becomes $15 a gallon in the US, what would it be in Europe? $ 50?

Mr. Big - thank you for your kind offer! If I'm in AZ (and I have been several times) I'll bear it in mind.
If the price of gas was $15 in the US, that would be about five times what it is now, approx. It doesn't follow that Europe's prices would be five times higher, because most of the european pump price is tax. That's why I'm paying about 32% more than I was 2˝ years ago, but US prices have in some cases doubled in the same period.
Incidentally, what is the gas mileage of your house?
-
Beetle, do you think you're better than people who drive big cars or trucks that burn more fuel than what you drive? What is it? Im dying to know. Help me to understand how your mind works.
I've never hit another woman, nor will I ever. That already makes me far better than you will ever be. And I'm what? Half your age?
-
so if gas in the US was to become $15 a gallon, $50 in europe is about correct
:)
-

Mr. Big - maybe $25

Probably more. And they'll probably introduce another sales tax, on top of VAT. ;) Aren't you glad you don't live in the UK? :)

Thanks, beleive it or not I looked at the xteras. They're cool, I probably would have gotten one had I not found the jeep. But I've always wanted a jeep, so it all seemed to fall into place. Now the fun starts, lift, tires, rims, body armor, and all the other goodies.
-
Thats a sweet TJ Morpheus, never mind all these soccer mom SUV's :) I'm an XJ guy myself. What do you think of the new JK coming out?
-
Thanks. The brandy new ones are ok, but I'm not thrilled with the new body style. It might grow on me though. I can pick them apart all day, but they're still a jeep. :)
As much crap as I will do to this, I probably wont end up off roading with it all that much. I've been searching around for an old willys to mollest. They are getting harder and harder to find I think. Atleast the ones that havent been restored or turned into monsters, or ones that aren't rusted out completely.
