Title: Pitchin shoes :)
Post by: Jackal1 on April 11, 2006, 10:44:01 AM
Anyone here into pitching horseshoes?
I used to throw shoes quite a bit, but haven`t done so in a while.
A few of us around here have started gathering materials , etc. to build some pits in my back yard.
Just got to wondering who here throws shoes.

I knew an old guy (my sister's father-in-law) who was an awesome pitcher. He was also a B-17 instructor pilot during the war. Loved to throw with him at picnics and stuff just to get him talking.

He threw a flat shoe.. kinda like a frisbee that made one exact revolution to the stake. I tried to do it and sucked horribly.

LOL I`m more the type that sucks until the 5th beer, sucks until the tenth beer, then blows chunks after that. :)

Actualy I used to be fairly good at it. Going to take a while to get back in practice. Just hope it don`t aggravate the discs in my neck.

Yea, I`ve seen people use that technique. I could never get the hang of it.

Ya just made me another project........my house in college(MSU) had pits and we played all the time......as well as i built pits/(rebuilt) back when i lived in Michigan for an old roomate of mine,   im 34 he was late 50's that old bastage could toss some shoes i tell ya............LOL i remeber the late nights of drinking and parking the 2 cars in the back ya so we could play in the dark at 3 am!!!

Well now i live in the moutians in NC............only flat spot is an old jeep trail!     I just fear losing many a shoe to the hill or even worse the lake if it rolls far enough!   maybee i could built some short lil walls along the edge of the trail and back from the pits.:O

but i do prefer sand in my shoe pits!

Friends of yours, or family? The one on the right bears a faint resemblence, except for the less than gray hair.

I throw a flat shoe with one rotation. Its not that hard. Its the range that gets me. Until I get locked in I can be a foot short or knick the top if the pin alot.  Aiming fluid really helps.

Well...........I got the pits painted and finished up yesterday afternoon. I hadn`t thrown in so long that the surrounding area was not safe for a while. :)
Finaly got dialed in and threw a couple of ringers in a row.

I had the pits nailed together, but needed and extra 6 ,  6" nails to finish nailing them off. A new, small hardware store opened up a couple of miles from me here on the lake a few months ago, so I went to get the total of 6 nails there. It turned into a regular Laurel and Hardie act. First, the two guys running the place couldn`t figure out what size the nails were, then they didn`t know the price. I kept telling them " Look guys..I just want 6 of the damn nails. How much? It`s not a stock market deal."
After dragging out three pricing manuals and me getting a tape measure off the shelf and proving the size (60s), they found a price. $3.00 per pound................but they had no way of weighing them :D
I said.." Let me get this straight. You are selling nails by the pound, but you have no way of weighing them?" I was cracking up at this point.
One of them came up with a brain storm. He went to a shelf and got a box containing a poultry scale that they had for sale. They then had to unpack and assemble the scale. Finaly, with the 6 nails weighed we were in business..........Well...not quite. They then could not convert the weight into price. After much discussion and cyphering one of the "Jethros" came up with me a price for my extreme puchase. They trashed the scales and the calculations on paper and one said.."Aww hell...50 cents." About 30 minutes from the beginning of the transaction I left with my precious metal in hand. :rofl
All that`s left to do now is ice down the brew and get the smoker rolling.

Did you space them 40' apart? I read on that site that was posted that it was regulation, seems a bit far.
