Title: Next FSO: Time to Choose Your Sides
Post by: skernsk on April 16, 2006, 09:20:03 PM
The write-up can be found ...... here (http://ahevents.org/site/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=115&Itemid=117)

This is the 'new' events site that we are going to be moving to eventually.  You may as well get used to looking through here if you have not already.  You will also  need to sign up.

Use the old events site ..... here (http://events.hitechcreations.com/)

Please update your numbers and get your side assignments sent in.  I will be setting sides and posting by Saturday the 22nd.  Frame 1 orders will also go out then.

Frame CO's.  The past few FSO's orders were going out late.  All CO's knew what side they were on but apparently did not read beneath that to see whether they were a FRAME CO or not.

I will post the sides and the Frame CO's will be in BOLD.  Make sure you all read the entire post as I do not want to be chasing down orders.  I am working long hours these days and that is one thing I won't worry about.  IF the orders are late .. your squad will be done for the remainder of my FSO.

Under Rule #6 of FSO

-  Frame C.O.'s are expected to have thier orders out by Wednesday night at the latest.  Orders sent out after Wednesday will be considered late. Squads who are chronically late with orders will be warned and then may be removed from Friday Squad Operations.

All Frame CO's.  Consider this your warning.  I will have your orders out by 10pm EST Saturday night for the next FSO.  I will not be late, that is the expectations my CM team and the participants have.

Your expected to have the orders out to your side by Wednesday night.

Oh, one last thing.  100 LA-5's or 100 of any planetype is not allowed.  Whew, glad I got that off my chest and somewhere in writing.  doobs, gimme the name of your therapist ... I'm getting the shakes.

Stukas are limited to 20.

It is not becuase they are 'Uber', they are limited because players get a second life.

If both sides start with 100 players; the Axis side actually has 100 + 20 second life pilots.

I have just sent out a mass email to our registered
members asking for their commitment to the next FSO.

I will submit a registration using the online form once
I get a count. We would like to register as US 'cause
I keep getting killed when I play as germans! :D

Ya, I got you once! :)

No telling what side you will be on Delta. When the Admin CM (that is Skernsk this time) divides up the squads he first looks at who has been Axis twice in a row and they are automatically put on the Allied side, (unless they want to be Axis). He also looks at those who have been Allied twice in a row and automatically makes them Axis.  There are a few exceptions to this but it is a rule of thumb we follow.  One thing for sure any squad who prefers Allied is never Axis more than twice in a row, this we stick to.  After that the Admin CM's places most squads where they want to be, or try to. :) Thankfully several squads say they don't care and that makes our job a lot easier. :)

Sorry guys, please use the old site to indicate commitment and side preference.  I'm a bit behind on the programming for the new site.

Guys, trying to get people from my squad is proving more
of a challenge then I first imagined.  I've even made up a telegram (http://david.tenifer.com/aceshigh/telegram/041706.php)
and sent it to them all.  So far interested players are just trickling in.
I had hoped for an avalanche.. :(

Anyway, now I want to create a promotional graphic for our web site
to help get people into this next event.

I need to know a few things before I can proceed though:

1) Start Date for Frame 1
2) Total Number of Frames
3) Date for Final Frame.

Lastly, do you guys know what number FSO this is?
What I mean is, is it the 19th FSO, or the 231st?
Anyone keep a count?

Thanks for the help guys!  This recruiting stuff is
hard! Maybe I should offer a sign-up bonus?  :lol

1. April 28, 2006
2. 3 Frames
3. May 12, 2006

Not sure on how many FSO's have been run, but rough estimate is 1 / month for four + years.  So a lowball estimate would be 50.  Daddog may have a better estimate.

As for recruiting, you may want to pick a commitment level you are sure to field and then use your +2 to get some others interested.  So if you have a commitment from 10 players, sign up for the 11-15 commitment level since you can field as few as 9 players and as many as 17.  Then for the next FSO setup you can adjust your numbers according to the hype you and the team have built up during this one.

Thanks forHIM...
BTW, I like it my brother! :)

I made up this graphic for my web site.
Everyone is welcome to use it to help advertise
the event if you like it.

I'm hoping to get at least 6 players for this first time out.
Six out of 46 is pretty pitiful..but like a snowball thats starts
rolling down a hill, things tend to grow over time. :D

Thanks for the info!

Nice image, where were you when I was making mine for the write up?  That is a nice pic.

Here is a squad-ops image I made a couple years back.  Simple, and easy.

That ain't half bad skernsk!
I like the texture effect you created there.
Gives it a nice worn, abused look!

BTW, I tried to reply to your PM but it said your
mailbox was full so it wouldn't go through.

Here's the message I tried to send:

Glad you like it skernsk!

I was inspired by the ones that were made up for the
old Warbirds European Micro Campaigns (EMC).

I'd be glad to make them up for future FSOs,
time and schedule permitting.
Gives me a chance to play around with Photoshop
some more. :D

Just try and give me as much notice as possible on
what subsequent FSOs will be based on so I can
start work on them without being rushed.

Thanks again for the compliment. Enjoy!

Nice banner delta!

I had fun looking around the old CM posts. I started the Snapshots in the Spring/Summer of 2000 with the help of several CM’s and vadr (and old Warbird CM). Vermillion was head CM back then.

Squad Ops (we used to call them Tour of Duty) started in Aug of 2001. Work in earnest of that event started in June of 2001 when fdski wanted to bring over the S3’s (excellent event) from Warbirds. He and I went rounds and rounds about that and the design of Squad Ops. banana (who was the head CM after Verm) finally went with my idea of Squad Ops. The first Squad three Squad Ops were ran by myself and ghosth. It has been almost 5 years. I would venture a guess we have hosted about 60 to 65 Squad Operations. :) Numbers have grown from 80 players in the first few TOD's to 220 plus in the frames we have been having lately.

Okay daddog,

So if I count from August of 2001 until this month,
and assuming one per month, I would put the total at
57 FSO's.

That would make this one number 58.

I'm just looking for a starting number for the graphics.
Looks like 58 is a good starting number so I
edited the graphic accordingly.

Nice work there, Delta. Just FYI... For that banner to be used on an HTC-sponsored website, you need to get the original artist's permission to use whatever images it contains.

AFAIK, you can use it on your own website (but that's not my call)... just be careful of any copyright lawyers sniffing around.
Title: Next FSO: Time to Choose Your Sides

Ahhh, not necessarily Dux.

In most cases, for a copyright infringement complaint to be
pursued there has to be some harm or pecuniary damage suffered
by the plaintiff.  Otherwise, its really not an issue.

The use of these images in a banner ad in no way injures
or compromises the copyright holders ability to benefit from
their work.  On the contrary,  it is more likely to bring their
work to the notice of potential buyers, etc.

My use of those images clearly falls within the exceptions
outlined in the "Fair Use" clause of U.S. Copyright law.

While securing permission to use the work is preferred,
it is not required by law.  The exceptions were developed
as the result of case law evolution that understood that
to get such permission for such innocuous use would be
unnecessarily burdensome, especially when the party using
the work was not injuring the copyright holder or attempting
to benefit financially from the copyright holders work.

Feel free to read more here.

Thanks for the heads-up though Dux.

Roger all that, Delta... it's cool with me. I'm just saying that if it goes up on the HTC site... this one... looking as if it's some kind of HTC-sanctioned artwork, then that's what the rules are. Not my rules... HTC's rules. The CMs have been down that road and have been spanked for it. :)

But I don't hink that applies for your own website. Like you said, it's just a heads-up.

Again... really nice job on the banner. :)

No problem Dux.

I'm not that familiar with HTCs rules on the matter.
Since its his website and his ***...I can understand such
a strict interpretation of the copyright laws.
Better to put a lid on everything than to try and police
what constitutes fair use.  Makes perfect sense to me.

I've been down this road before myself also.
I had my work infringed upon...it was outright stolen!

No modification no nothing.  It was being passed
off as original by the guy who took it.  I pitched
a ***** and even talked to a few lawyers
about it.  In the end I was basically told that
unless its costing me money or harming my reputation
that I should drop the issue.  Unless there is some
substantial harm I was told to try and work it out.
In the end I 'convinced' the guy to stop using my work.

But that was a case of outright theft.  It would be
the same as me buying a copy of one of Robert
Taylors paintings, having it professionally
reproduced, sticking my signature on them
and then selling them as my own work.

Having been stung by this kind of thing before
I made darn certain that I understood the law.
The last thing I would want to do is what was done
to me.

Now, having seen how the law is and how it actually
works I am wiser in the wyles of copyright
jurisprudence.

If it is an issue with HTCs sites and you intend
to keep using them I can always use screencaps from the
game or create some composite model photographs
of my own to use for future banners.  just let me know
if thats the case. :aok

P.S. Thanks daddog! :)

880Sqn. has had a sudden inflow of new pilots to the squad this week that would like to participate in FSO with us. I have already sent in our commitment level (4-6), but would like to change it (7-10) if possible.
Is it alright if I go ahead and re-send our information?
