Title: Is there still a limit on how many people you can "see"?
Post by: Urchin on April 18, 2006, 07:48:02 PM
I ask because I remember way back when the 8th AF scenario ran there was a 40 person limit.

Seems like tank town has a problem like that on center island... you fly over and see a bunch of GVs, no airplanes around.  Then you fly a little away from the GVs and airplanes start popping up in mid air.

Just curious if it is something that can be fixed or if it is hardcoded.

i saw that to earlier. planes and tanks not showing up. then they would appear. was like 4k away from bombers. soon as they got over center of TT they dissapeared and then re-appeared a couple seconds later

It is because of a new technology HiTech stole from the Nazis when he went back in time to 1945.

Its called a cloaking device.  It allows the object (in our case the aircraft) to disappear when you get near it for a limited time.

How else does he so closely model all of the aircraft in the game?  He goes back in time and test flys them himself.  :D

Way to go HiTech!   :aok

WW2OL syndrome?

"WW2OL syndrome?"

No way.  I can't believe HTC would stoop that low - claiming to show you 64 cons and in reality give you 12.

As always, it is either your FEs or net lag.  Get a new ISV and a new computer.

lol, I got a AMD 4000+64 on a SLI MB with a 7900 GTX video card and 2 gig cas 2 ram.  Only 16 process's running.  Sry to say it not my computer thats the problem.  I also running on a 3meg DSL.  This only happens at all TT's on all maps with TT's.  Planes flying in these areas with 50+ GV's on the ground show up when they like 2k or less from ya depending on alt of course.  If I 10K above TT its fine.  As soon as u go below that right over the town there, the planes no longer show up 6k away.  They just appear at 2k from ya whether they coming or going away from ya.  I actually believe it a combination of things.  The server can't position that many people at 1 time in same area to all FE's in time, net lag, etcc..

lol Urchin I saw the same thing at TT the other day.  Planes literally appeared 2k away from me after I passed over the tank battle, and it wasn't the thing where you can't see the icon of a lower plane, all 4 of them were above me.

Not only did I have bombers "vanishing" in front of me.

I have a P-51 warping around on me when I was gunning in my B-17s.  He would approach from the rear, then overshoot, then *snap* hes back at D600 on my tail for a perfect line up.   No loops or turns or me oversooting him.  He just teleported.  He did it 4 times till he destroyed all my bombers.  Also I blew his wing right off in the game and he kept on flying just fine.  I hate to say this but ...

"Cheater!"

It seemed kinda like the "Go To" player function in Microsoft Flight Simulator.  Where you appear right behind the person when he wasn't even near you.

Yes, I think it did come from the Romulans.

But I did see that in TT the other night. I was in an ostie shooting down planes, and then when it got overloaded, they'd disappear when they got 1.5 - 2k out. Figured it was a cap on visible planes. There were a hell of a lot more than 40 in the mix though.

Strange things been happening yesterday.....

Seemingly dissappearing and reappearing planes, Buff without icons, drones floating above a base without any lead bomber around............... AH Twilight Zone!

Or just a bad connect.

Could really use a Gian hijack about now.....

But, in lieu of that -- when you see lots of strange stuff like warping attackers etc, pull up th emap, right clivk on it, and select net status. Odds are that you'll see a sawtooth tracing instead of a nice clean one. On my system, found that processes running in the background (notoriously, antivirus software and windows automatic updates) were consuming processor cycles and interrupting steady packet stream.

The biggest process I found that creates the saw tooth is Windows Imagine acquition.  More then likely if u have a scanner or all in one printer, this service will be on and what it does is constanly monitor your USB port for the scanner.

:rofl  You guys figured it out already.  Everyones connection was bad last night.  I was losing planes 1 vs 1, with a ping time of 27ms.  I think it is Al Gore's problem since he invented the internet.  One think is for sure, nothing to do  with coad or anything HT related.

Net lag

I know it was more than 40 planes 5 years ago.

It was the 64 plane limit at that time. I suspect it went UP with the release of AH2 but I can't prove it.

Its NOT easy to test with any certainty, and if I was HT, I wouldn't touch this thread.

Good luck finding an answer.

Oh, was it 64?  I thought I remembered 40.

Why wouldn't you touch this thread?  It seems like a fairly reasonable question to ask, and I know the dissapearing plane phenomenon wasn't just happening to me.  Plus it only happened when I was right near tank town, and there were a bunch of guys there.

Seemed reasonable to connect the two.

I see some unexplainable stuff & have a netstatus that's rock steady & plenty of PC for the job *see below* w/ a DSL connection. ( I go into msconfig & disable everything in the services/boot/startup that I don't need & restart before I play AH )

 Athlon 64 4000+
 7900GTX video card
2 GiGs of patriot dual channel memory
 etc.-etc.-etc.

True, the last few days "felt" strange. I loose sight of opponents a lot more, they seem to "vanish" and reappear..... but as long as i dont have any hard facts that proove its a bug and/or a net lag issue.... its probably just me and my usual suckage gone worse.

Well, speaking for myself I only saw it happen in areas were there were A LOT of people (i.e. tons of tanks sitting on the ground).

Just flying around normally I didn't experience anything out of the ordinary.

Because he has nothing to gain & potentially lots to lose.

I mean really, if you were HT, would you explain how the guts work?
