SimHQ? I'm still waiting for thier "AW:Vietnam" interview (lol. Spoons or one of the old SimHQ hands might remember what I'm refering to)
In all honesty. I stopped reading that wesite when they changed ownership a few years ago. It went downhill fast (more like fell right off a cliff IMO) afterward. Did it change hands again?

Yep, during the time I was writing for them, the ownership changed hands twice. I logged on recently and re-registered on the message boards, but the pages were so slow loading that I've given up.
But I have been spoiled here, the AH boards are simply the best. They load quickly, operate smoothly, and far more importantly, the community is friendly, humorous and generally helpful and informative. I think we have something special here, no need to go elsewhere.

OF COURSE, there is always COMBATSIM.COM (http://www.combatsim.com). Their forums are starting to take-off again and are a lot faster.. ;)
-
I usually go there daily, their Falcon AF forums are frequented by the developers. Its a good source of info and a chance to ask them about new features, etc
I noticed yesterday that they had a review up about the matrox 3-monitor system with HUGE screen shots (several pages worth) that were very very slow to load. The site seemed to go boom shortly after that article came out.
They just repaired their forums from a "disk error" last week.

I stopped going to combatsim years ago when it when pay to view, then it basically went dormant. Did they resurect themselves and realize that the pay route wasnt going to work? Havnt been there in a Looooong time.

Yep, combatsim is alive and well, and it's all free now!
Yes, the paying route wasn't working. The amount of effort to track the paying etc was not worth the costs on a personal time level. Simple economics of scale I guess...
They still post reviews and there a core group of IL2 and Pacific Fighters that frequent their forums. Starting to grow again...

"...no need to go elsewhere."
To be truthfull if you're a connoisseur of WWII aircombat sim/games there's not a lot of places to go - being quite honest. :) FA? WB? WWIIO? Nope. Closed, company webboards (well, WB's has "AGW" but it's where ex-Wb's players meet to talk and argue in the OT forum. Much like how Bigweek turned out)
I did enjoy SimHQ quite a lot when it was really THE place to go for news, interviews and keeping up with player developed content for games like EAW. Just before the "Cult of Oleg" took over the forums.
Anyway.

Yep, that was a real shock. I've been into flight sim's since about 1983, and in that time I've seen and been involved in almost everything the genre has to offer. The wonderful usenet flame wars, the birth of Air Warrior, Voss's great TAS scam (was on the beta team) and at the other end of the scale I've made some life long friends. I've been involved with developers, written three strategy guides, flown Aces High since it was called "Confirmed Kill". I've been around a while, and I've seen a lot, but the IL2 fanboy cult was a real shock. You would not believe some of the stuff that spilled over into real life with those guys.

Absolutely... This place is a real gem!
You may think that some of posters here can be hostile and aggressive, but it is very easy to get the wrong impression. There are a lot of posts here that might look bad, but are perfectly harmless, and when you know who the posters are, what might look like a personal attack can actually be something very different.
I see people posting here that go back a very long time... there are a lot of AW players that have been doing this for as much as eighteen years already and I see people posting here that go back that far. The water is muddied by the psychological complexities of the online persona, and the long standing tradition of online hate that spices the arena play, and can, and often does, exist between the very best of real world buddies.
Throw in the trolls, the multiple accounts, and inside jokes, fake squads, and you get a mix that can look vitriolic, but they are rarely anything of the kind. I'm as guilty as any one else, I've been played by the best, almost all the vets have a few hook scars, but I've collected more pelts here than I would ever admit to. But it is always in good spirit. I can't even remember the last time I saw a thread here that contained any genuine malice or ill intent.
Sure, there are some harsh words from time to time, but mostly that's just a little unrestrained passion for the game, almost to be expected from the type of characters that a game like this attracts, and the moderators keep it well under control. You may also occasionally see somebody hooked that doesn't quite know the score, and as they are reeled in the struggle can be a tad intense, but other than a few fresh hook scars, no real harm is done. It's a rich and varied tapestry, today's baby seals are tomorrow's hunters, it is all part of a real and powerful community bonding process that holds us all together. It is so powerful, that it can last beyond game, it can last our entire lives.
The bottom line is that what happens here is safe, it is fun, and it embodies the spirit of the community, and we are all a part of it.
These boards are as good as it gets!

I think that Air Warrior, Confirmed Kill, Warbrids and Aces High are all part of the same evolution.
However, I was only pointing out that I started playing from the beginning. I've played them all, and for a while I played them more than one at a time. However, Warbirds was the one I enjoyed the least of all, so I don't write about it and rarely ever mention it, no disrespect to Warbirds, it was just a personal preference.
Of Air Warrior, Confirmed Kill, Warbrids and Aces High, I know only the last three were created by HT, but the similarities and influence of each one on the other are so strong they have all blended together in my mind over the years. Do you remember when Confirmed Kill stopped using Domark's terrain engine, and it reverted to flat land for a while? I thought then that the similarities to AW were even more compelling. That's why I think of AW, CK WB and AH as all part of the same evolution, and its been a very enjoyable ride. That's why when people ask me how long I've been playing this game, I say it has been since about 1988, because for me this game's ancestry goes back that far and for me that's when it all began.

Badboy,
maybe i should have added another smiley :). Dnag internet makes it real hard to get irony/sarcasm across at times.
I think one of the reasons this game had me hooked from the first sortie on Schutts account is the community. In the arenas as well as on this BBS. The willingness to help virtual strangers (or rather virtual friends, but RL strangers) out when they need something.... amazing.
I found more friends here than i ever thought possible.
AH community!
