Ottawa is going nowhere.  They wont get by the Sabers which have owned Ottawa this season.

For one of the lowest payrolls in the NHL, Sabers will get nothing but better as they will be able to hold onto players and get good free agents during the off season.  Having one of the lowest payrolls and getting to the playoffs is saying a lot.

You can tell im with the Sabers.

Devils :aok  horrible 1st half (well by their standards) and still pulled it together.  That's a winner.

Haven't we discussed this before?

Oct 8, 5-0 Ottawa
Nov 2, 10-4 Ottawa
Nov 12, 6-1 Ottawa
Feb 4, 1-2 Buffalo (SO)
March 18, 4-2 Ottawa
March 24, 3-1 Ottawa
April 8, 2-6 Buffalo

So Ottawa won 5 out of 7 games, and outscored Buffalo 31-16, yet some how Buffalo has owned Ottawa all season?

Western sports always makes me wonder. They play football (soccer) in Winter and hockey in Summer.

Here we just had hockey season closed, Ak Bars (White Panther, a Tatar team from Kazan') won the cup, and football season just started.

Well, I'm a hockey fan Curval and sad to say that the leafs haven't played the kind of hockey I respect for a long time. Because of the lack-luster talent they play a bump and grind kind of hockey. Slow. Poor to terrible passing. Poor play making. . . etc.
I like fast skating teams who can deliver a swift accurate pass to set up play after play. There is nothing more exciting in sport for me as to watch a quick team who can rip up the ice and create multiple scoring opportunities, time and time again. Keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole game.

So, there it is. I'm a Sens fan! :aok

I think this will be a very good playoff season. Best of luck to all.

GO SENS

I can't argue with the sentiment but the Maple Leaf org has a history of controvery and corruption that is hard to ignore. They don't spend the required $$$ to get top talent; It appears to them it is only a business...winning or losing is not the goal. Unlike the Blue Jays who spent a whole lot of $$$ this year to get some top talent telling us that the team deserves it, the city deserves it the fans deserve it!

The deapth of my contempt for this 'wanna be' team is illustrated this year when I bet against them (and won) on serveral occasions. There is talk around the street and papers of a boycott of the Leafs and I'm all for it.

Now at dinner time news we are told that the GM John Ferguson fired the Leaf coach Pat Quinn. Reaction around town is not good.

When it comes down to supporting a Toronto team, I will support the Blue Jays! Win or lose I will support 'em.

Please.  You want a hard year, try being a Blues fan this year.  And let me tell you from experience, spending money on top name talent means squat.  For YEARS we griped and moaned and complained that the Blues wouldnt spend money to attract or keep big name players.  Yet they were ALWAYS in the playoffs.  Just one choke away from a Stanley Cup.  Then came the money man.  I never cared much for Laurie, but everyone hailed him as the savior, the man who would get the Blues over the Hump.  He spent LOTS of money hiring big name players.  Guess where it got us.  The same place we already got without his money.  He spent more money.  Same thing.  Every year we were soooooooooooo close.  But people forgot we were just as close every year before he came with his mega-money.  Then after just a few years he showed his true colors and sold the team.  Now here we are this year with a group of young kids who have seldom seen ice time in the big league.  Talented, but so inexperienced.  I tell ya, theres times this year .............. well anyway, the only real interest I had by this late in the season was watching them retire Al MacInnis' jersey number.  Watching them raise #2 into the rafters was great, but I actually teared up.  There's a great hockey player.  He's gonna be missed.

The playoffs?  Eh, maybe next year.

Same boat here (Pens).  We go and sign T-BLOW, Recchi, Leclair, Gonchar, Palffy.  Recchi goes off being a jerk in the locker room, Palffy just up and quits, and Leclair and Gonchar hire body-doubles for the 1st half of the season.  T-BLOW was perhaps the worst goaltender I've ever watched.  Mario gets heart problems and quits, and getting that dumb oaf Cairns was about the only thing to get excited about.  All the while, the original coach (Olczyk) has this dumfounded look on his face like HiTech at a spelling bee.

Still, the last half got better.  Well, the team didn't win any more games, but at least they showed up to a few of them, Crosby seemed to settle in (and exploded towards the end of the season), Therrien came in and figured out which of his Farm players would do well, the higher-ups FINALLY gave up on T-BLOW and brought in Fleury (developing, but damn he has talent) and now it looks like next season we might be getting Malkin.

And of course we have a few lesser known rookies who are likely going to spend their careers in the NHL, at least while they're in Pittsburgh:

Colby Armstrong, Konstantin Koltsov, Ryan Whitney & Noah Welch, to name a few.

I say, in five years, if the Pens can hold onto most of these players and maybe sign/draft one or two defensemen and wingers, they'll be a Stanley Cup contender.

Yeah, its kinda tough though when your team has made the playoffs every year, no matter how bad the season, for 25 years straight.  Then to get dumped in the gutter like this ...........

We've got some kids that will probably be top 10 league players, but they are still early 20s, no real experience, and the vets we still have left act like they have no life left in them.  No leadership.  And frankly I cant blame them.  It was a weird season for everyone coming back after the blowup last year and the rules changes, and these guys had management and owner changes and people leaving ........  Ah well.  I'll be there next year to cheer em on, hopefully things will be better.

In the meantime, GO REDWINGS!  :)

Well Sabers got Philly for their playoff round.  Going be a easy series for them. :D

And SoA2 on your Blues thing,  same goes kinda with the St. Louis Rams.  Different sport but the amount of money they have spent for their team, mostly on offense, to go that bad last year and only reach 500 the year before.  My favorite team for football as their offense is so enjoyable to watch but some of the moves that have been done have really irked me and having a team that has that much potential and falter that last 2 years can get irritating.

GRRRRRREAT game!!

Sabres look real good

But you can't talk about this game and in particular the OT period without mentioning the hit on Umberger. OMG -- this is one of the hardest hits I've seen in any sport. Knocked him out cold; this will be shown on every sports show for the next while. Unbelievable.

I hope you're not serious about that being a tough hit.  I've taken bigger hits from my sister.

That's not to mention my time playing Street Hockey.

I'm not trying to woo the crowd over to my side, but all it looks like is someone getting caught off balance and under the chin.  Nothing to really brag about, considering how the saber player (he's not important enough to name) barely even flinched.

Yup.  Just watched the replay.  Nothing impressive at all.

That's at least 200 lbs coming at him at full speed, without him having any time to prepare or even see it coming.  He hit him square - that guy went flying back.  At any rate, that's about the most brutal (clean) open ice hit you can hope for.  A hip check might be more spectacular, and if you land wrong, hurt more, but that sucker was just a car crash.  With an oak.

I have to say, while I've been rooting for Detroit my heart wasn't quite into it, and I've really admired the way Edmonton is playing.  This is how hockey should be.  Yeah there's been some so-so periods, but mostly its been really sharp action, lots of good hits, and plenty of shots on goal with 2 excellent goalies.  I heard one of the players say it was emotionally draining, heck its draining just watching!  Detroit may have had the best regular season record, but as everybody knows this is a different game altogether.  Edmonton is up 2 -1 in the series now.  Next game is at home for them.  Be interesting to see if Detroit has enough juice left in the tank to pick it up on the road against these guys.

He didn't go flying back.  He fell in place.  The only reason the hit "Seemed Brutal" is that he got caught under the chin when he wasn't paying attention.

Eric Lindros (also an ex-flyer) used to do this all the time.  Lindros was one of the tallest players in the NHL, yet he skated with his head at shoulder height for the average height NHL player.  Couple this with looking down and all someone has to do is connect with their shoulder and you're going out like a light.

That doesn't mean that it was a big hit.  It means you were a handsomehunk for skating like a flaming retard and not paying attention.

Btw, Eric Lindros and his brother actually had to end their careers from too many concussions from skating like retards.

Open ice hit vs. one body being forced into a solid object...

Oarges and Apples.

Umberger recieved a concussion. No one said it was the greatest hit of all time. Only saying it was a good hit. Ive seen Pat Lofontaine take alot harder hits.

That hit right there is borderline suspension-worthy.  I'd have to see a few other angles of it, but from that one, it looks like a hit from behind with intent to injure to me...  At any rate, a bench-clearer (and yet, there isn't a brawl - what sort of sissy league is this? :D  )

Put someone through the glass in the NHL and i'd imagine you'd be receiving a not so nice note from the commissioner.  I've seen some hard hits but that was along the lines of Bertuzzi.

at the very least that hit would be ruled boarding and a penalty given; If I were ref I would add 'intent to injure' for an additional 5 and a game misconduct

to hit someone the way Cambell hit Umberger takes alot more skill and timing than to cheap-shot someone into the boards

I dunno about calling it boarding. Looked like the guys shoulder was in front of thar poor sucker. I think the glass breaking kind of screwed him. Look how he bent over the boards. No doubt the guy was looking to rattle his cage but didnt appear to be a dirty hit. Either way one of his teamates should have went after the guy:D

Even though you are from canada, I'd wager that you know nothing about hockey at all.  These 2 sentences prove it.

Unfortunately, I don't have a TV to watch the games, but it's dissapointing that so few people know nothing about the rules.

It's not hard to see at all.  The player that got checked WAS FACING THE OTHER GUY.

In hockey, if you go into a corner, stop, and turn away from the boards, you deserve to get thrown through the glass.

Quote
Open ice hit vs. one body being forced into a solid object...

No, not at all.  That isn't anywhere near being a decent statement.

What happens if you miss on open ice?  At worst, you trip on the other guy.  Big ****ing deal.

What happens if you miss on the boards?  You hit the boards with the same force you were going to hit the other guy.

This is why the rules are in place the way they are now.  If your back is turned, it is a penalty to hit you.  It is a penalty to lead with your stick.  Any other time, you're just a handsomehunk for doing something stupid.

Sabres are down a player. Defenseman Teppo Numminen has been diagnosed with racing heart. One of  our key players. Hope all turns out ok.

Teppo is on his way out soon being almost 40 years old.  They say 30 year old but if I remember when looking at the roster he was born in 1968 so thats almost 40 years old.

Still got other defensemen but that is one key one which shows need to get more good defensemen.

Why they got rid of Jason Woolley puzzles me along with Alexei Zhitnik and Miroslav Satan.  Loved watching Satan pulling some fancy moves around people and they heavy hits of Zhitnik.  Getting rid of those two defensemen suprised didnt hurt the team as much as I though it would have.

Afiniganov is much better then Satan. I was a huge Satan fan until I started paying attention to Afiniganov.

Teppo may not be KEY. But he sure does help out with his experience. We have plenty of good defense to go around.

Just finished watching the overtime period for Anaheim and Calgary.  Jeeze, quick period lol.  Beauty of a shot by O'Donnell.  They are tied at 2-2 also.

Watching the previous game, I thought Dallas might actually pick up and make things interesting.  They started out OK today, they just couldnt finish.

Really though the Avs didnt look all that great either.  Sloppy passing, slow to react when Dallas changed tactics, too slow on defense.  They had alot of luck today, and just enough skill to pull over the hump.  Barely.  Best part of the game for me was that hit on Modano, and he didnt even stay out.  They didnt hit him hard enough.  :)  The first 2 goals were just given to them by Dallas.  The goalie just lost all sense of what was going on or something.  Considering how good he CAN play, that was pathetic.  Stars deserved to lose, but Colorado better find some juice from somewhere, or they are going home real soon.

Keep in mind, Avalanche is a four-line team while Dallas is pretty much a three-line team. Once the game gets long, the four-line team will have an advantage simply because they are less tired.

I'm torn between Philly and Buffalo.. Both teams have the best D-men since Edmonton and Ruotsalainen in 1985. Numminen is better defensively, but Pitkanen is a better offensive d-man... Darn! It would be a lot easier if all those teams didn't have Finnish players. :)

This past season at Penn State, we had 2 White Outs.  100,000+ all wearing white filling the stadium.  That's not to count the thousands more outside tailgating still wearing white.

So my hockey pool picks are 6 Red Wings and then 4 from some other teams.

And now wings have one of the most spectacular flame outs in history.

Another year.

Another $25 down the toliet.

If you want any team to lose next year just ask me to pick them in the pool. It never fails.

Friday!

NHL (http://www.nhl.com/news/2006/05/271164.html)

Out of all the teams in the NHL. (Besides the Sabres of corse) I have the most respect for Ottawa players. Each has a high level of class and are in it to play hockey. Not push their way to a victory. This series will be great, no matter the outcome.

Oh yea, tickets are sold out already.

The "class" of Phili fans.

Quotes
"The Philly faithful booed the Flyers off the ice, and the club's performance didn't get any better."

"Esche, who allowed 22 goals and made 154 saves in the series, was actually cheered as a sign of appreciation as he skated off the ice with Philadelphia down 5-0."

So... I'm hoping that Dallas, San Jose and Anaheim all lose. One down, three to go.

Now that Calgary is out, think I'll root for Edmonton. That said, I don't have much emotionally invested in the playoffs. I just hope for good games.

If they continue like this, Sabres have a good shot at winning the cup!

(be real interesting to see what happens tonight between Sens@Sabres. It's a MUST WIN for Sens. Alfredson has to get it in gear this game.

Especially when the Bills dont make it into the playoffs and have little chance of turning around in the near future. Bandwagon or long-term fan, the more the better for the community.

But I think we can handle the Canes better. They have a somewhat slower team. Either team we get, Im hoping their series goes to game 7. That way our guys will get a break and neither the Canes of the Devils will be on a hot streak.

No offense to the West Coast teams. But this year whoever makes it from the East Buffalo/Carolina/New Jersey they are going to ruin the West team in the Cup.

You may want to check the Hurricanes out a little closer. If any team in the league is built to match Buffalo its Carolina. If you didnt catch any Canes games this year you may want to watch the reels. Im sure Buffalo is. Carolina is a much tougher team to beat than what was left of the Sens for the playoffs. The Sens were much better in reg season. Carolina only finished 1 point behind the Sens for the east, and Carolina is still intact minus Cole. This match up will come down to Goal tending. Both rookies on a roll, and who wants it worse. Going to be great games to watch.

Buffalo vs Carolina game 3,4 and 6 tickets sold out in 12 minutes.

Games 1,2, 5, and 7 still on sale in Carolina. Last time I checked I can get tickets behind their bench still.

I want to see Edmonton/Buffalo.  One way a Canadian team gets to bring home the Cup after 10 billion years, the other way at least the Sens got beaten by the Stanley Cup winners.

Uhm... I'll give you another chance in the Anaheim series (even though they're already down a game) if you want. After that, I think I'm just gonna cash in my chips - I don't feel all that lucky against the East this year. :)

One of the greatest things. Some of our biggest rivals are Canadian teams. And when it comes down to the Eastern Conference finals and Buffalo makes it in without a Canadian team their support usually always goes to Buffalo. Vis versa when there is only a Canadian team. For how mush we dont get along its always cool to see this happen.

By the way...

I will agree with you. I dont think they caused a win or loss, but they are either missing calls, or calling some that in my opinion are just crazy. I have seen this all year with all the teams. So for me at this point this is just another part of the game that I have grown used to.

In the end of it all... The best team wins.

Thats where Buffalo is not taking it well. For the most part all season and during the playoffs the officals have called each game extremely fairly. When games like last night happen we seem to fall apart at the seams.

Yeah I think all the teams will have to adapt, and ajust until this gets sorted out, and the games are called consistently. It does not look like the officials are being officiated. It sucks but IMO thats all they/we can do.

"until this gets sorted out" Not going to be this season.

Yeah, almost every one of those calls had me scratchin' my head.

It gets so ya need a photon microscope to spot the infraction, if one even exists.

Funked.... How about this...

I bet on the Oilers in the finals. You bet on the winner of the Sabres/Hurricans series.

If I win, you add another pair of tickets.

If I lose, I wipe out the two pairs of tickets you owe and we're square.

It's up to you, obviously, but I just feel the need to give you a chance to make this up.

Sabres did score 3 beauty goals...but to call a minor penalty in o/t in a divisional final, it better be a real 'unforgivable' infraction and it wasn't...the officials handed Canes the game.

I would still pull for the East. I said if the Sab's beat us I would have to go with them for the cup just because its still the east, but thats me. I know you said "IMHO" but about every poll says the Oil wins. So I would say in fact that the Canes are the underdogs. At this point it dont matter. All the fuss the fans do dont change a thing. The teams just play the game, and there is a winner in the end.

Series over.

Canes will not get the respect that most Stanley Cup winners get. They beat two teams not able to play at their best as they did all playoffs. Thats different then playing and beating two teams playing with their best players at full strength. I may be biased because they beat Buffalo, but Im pretty sure Id say the same thing if Buffalo never made it to the playoffs. Carolina being my second favorite team Id say the samething.
Title: Stanley Cup Predictions and Hopes
Post by: Dead Man Flying on June 06, 2006, 06:12:33 PM
I think they'll get plenty of respect.  It's only the people with an axe to grind who won't give them respect, but it's not like they'd give them respect anyway.  First it's bad/biased officiating, then it's because the Canes exploit the injuries of other teams, and yet I've barely heard from you that they just flat out kicked a team's behind all over the ice.

That's not a lack of respect, that's sour grapes.

Being that the Canes are one of my favorite teams its hardly sour grapes. Im over the loss in our series. I was happy my team made it to the playoffs.
Bad/Biased officating has effected all teams in the playoffs. I dont think it changed the outcome at all.

Buffalo got beat by a better team at that time. Im only saying that Carolina's Eastern Conference win and possible Stanley Cup win will be caused by them being a better team at the time because of injuries. If Ottawa hadnt experienced the injuries they had early in the series I believe they would have wipped Buffalo.

Yeah 5-0.

The Oilers = frustrated. Bad pens, tried to take out Ladd with the goon. Say that Rod is cheating on the face off. If you cant beat the guy dont say he cheats. That should be left in middle school.

The Oilers have a good team, but if they dont calm down they will be crushed by the Canes.

I have heard the Lucky Canes thing now more than a few times. I would maybe agree IF the Canes had it tuff makeing it into the playoffs, but this year they came out a 2nd seed only 1 point, 1 game from 1st seed. What I mean is... The stats: (vs. Montreal / w5-3 / w7-3 / w8-2 / w5-1/ ---we took all 4)
(vs. NJ / w6-1 / w4-1 / L0-3 / L3-4 --- Split)
(vs. Buff / w5-3 / w4-3 / w4-3 / L0-4 --- 3 out 0f 4)
We beat them all when not hurt.

Over all
                 W   L    OL
CAROLINA 52  22   8

Im sorry I cant go with luck. I do understand the luck in sports, and agree that it was not a BAD thing that some teams were hurt, but I think the Canes would be in the same spot if this was not the case.

Bias?? Of course I am, I also understand that some of you did not even watch the Canes this year, I dont see every team either.

I am a die hard Hurricane fan please only take my post as such. I know everyone sees things differantly.

I know the place.  Lots of old Aces High players are out there (Honch, Yams, Wulfi), and I'm in north Durham county about an hour away.  I grew up in Pennsylvania, and my family had season tickets to the Flyers in the early 1980s, but I've gone to a number of Hurricanes games since moving here.  You can't help but love the club, and when I showed up to a Flyers-Hurricanes game with a Flyers jersey on in the middle of a bunch of Hurricanes fans, they were all polite and glad to see a fellow hockey fan.

I'm not sure a Hurricanes fan in Philadelphia would have found the same reception.  That's really refreshing attitude.

I personally witnessed a Flyer's fan get a very rough reception at a Bruins game in the old Boston Garden.

I was born in RI. Moved down here in the 80's Been here since.

The fans here are great people. They just want to have fun.

Being a college sports state allready its only a mater of time before the long long list of our sports fans here jump into Hockey. When that fan base begins.... well I dont think people can imagine what thats going to do. People think its just hot air, but you being here as well as I, know all about the depth of that fan base. That day will come. Its allready started.

I hope we have many years with this team.

If the Canes only made left turns and raced eachoter around the ice maybe they could sell out tickets.

Jeeze, I still remember my first game.  Blackhawks vs Blues at the old Checkerdome.  Before the 1st period was over 2 guys had been "escorted" from the arena and there were a half a dozen minor fights breaking out at any given time.  Beer was flying, people were in each others faces yelling and screaming, and that was just in the stands.  On the ice it looked like somebody could get killed.

I miss that.

I remember countless bench-clearing brawls in the old days. . . back then even the goalies would go at it against each other LOL. Remember those days? It used to take the officials like...10 minutes to sort out all of the penalites:)

My favorite fight. Steve Sheilds (Buffalo) vs. Garth Snow (Phili?) They came to center ice and faught a good 5 minutes. Pull every pad off of eachother except leg pads. Was a great fight to watch.

The Triangle area isn't NASCAR country, you gimp... it's basketball country.  NC State, Duke, and North Carolina are all within 30 minutes of one another here, and Wake Forest is less than two hours to the west.

Now, win or lose, it's hockey country too.

I think Carolina is gassed.

I really think they're done. I can't believe it.

This series looks like every other series Edmonton has been in. They just stick around long enough for the other side to run out of steam.

Game seven! I'd never have guessed.  No matter what happens next, it's been a great series.

Yeah... but Edmonton has really turned up the volume on their physical game. They weren't checking like this in the first two games. I think it's made a difference.

Next game is Monday!

No matter what - that was a great game. They were like, two totally different teams tonight. Carolina absolutely deserved this.

Class acts, all the way around.

And I'm happy about what this is going to do for hockey in general down there. I don't think they'll have all that much trouble selling tickets next year.

Carolina fans. You earned it.
