Title: Interested in 9x XP Dual Boot
Post by: aztec on April 19, 2006, 07:38:03 PM
I'm able to google a vast amount of info on this if you partition your HDD but can't find anything other than a chance mention here and there  about dual booting with two seperate HDDs. I know it can be done but can't find out how. If anyone could help it might even get me back in the game:eek:

 Thx in advance, aztec

You dont want to do it on one hard drive.  You can, but it's a pain.  Much easier to run 2 HDs.  Have your Win9x HD setup first.  Hook up the second HD and begin the XP install.  It will detect the previous Windows and when you tell it to install on the other HD it will setup your dual boot for you IIRC.  I did this for quite awhile until my Win9x HD crashed and I lost everything I was saving 9x for in the first place.

If I may ask, what is the reason that XP is holding you back from running AH?  While I was hesitant to give up my Win98 for the longest time, there really isnt anything I've found from 98 that wont work on XP.

Thx for th advice SOA. The reason is after my last build I went from Me to XP, so of course now I can't program my CH anolog gear. I want to dual boot so that I can use speedkeys again.

Another question comes to mind Star, my system is based on a Gigabyte K8NS MB, and AMD 64 3000+. Can you tell me if my 64 bit processor would be compatible with a 32 bit OS?
Thx again, az

PS Anyone out there who still has a copy of the CHjoy98beta drivers?

I'm running dual boot.

2 points really to watch.

A You must setup 98 first! Either seperate hard drives, or partition the hard drive you have. I'm useing a 200 gig WD with 3 partitions. 40 gig for win98, and 2 80 gig's. D has Xp home and E is storage at this point.

B Don't let windows "upgrade" your current windows.
Force it to install to a new dir on 2nd drive/partition.
Personally I stuck with fat32 for all drives. Just makes it so 98 can see XP drives etc. Which btw is very handy if you get a nasty virus/spyware in XP.

You can boot to 98, and clean house on it.

Windows Annoyances.org is single best site I've found for info on dual booting.

fat 32 vs ntfs   the ntfs is a better file system and reads alittle faster (not really noticable ) and it will play the newest games .

the problem with one format as 32 and the other as ntfs is ...the fat 32 (win98) cant read the ntfs or swap files  so they have to bolth be in fat 32 .

Ok Thx Roscoroo...I'm having a problem right off the bat though, when booting to the 98SE CD It loads the cd drives, and then displays the message " Scanning PCI Bus using mechanism #2.... " And then the computer locks. If anybody could help me with this I sure would appreciate it.  Thank you!

My system is as follows;
Gigabyte K8NS Socket 939
AMD 64 3000+
ATI Radeon  9800 Pro
SB Live mp3+
1 gig DDR 3200 ram

Grab a basic Windows 98 bootup disk form the web.
Edit the config.sys file and remove  the entries for scanning the SCSI bus.
Use this to boot the PC then run the setup file on the Windows CD.

You will probably have to edit the config.sys file on the bootdisk, comment out the appropriate 5 lines -

comment out the 5 SCSI lines by adding a 'rem' at the start of the line as follows -

rem device=aspi2dos.sys
rem device=aspi8dos.sys
rem device=aspi4dos.sys
rem device=aspi8u2.sys
rem device=aspicd.sys /D:mscd001

Edit it with notepad, make sure when you save it is set to 'All Files' and you save as config.sys .

Problem is caused by Win98 not realisng that some of the newer devices in you system are not SCSI but problably IDE raid, or SATA.
So when it tries to scan the bus it craps out.

Even easier -

Goto - http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

Grab the "Windows 98SE Custom, no ramdrive" NOT the "OEM" bootdisk (Mirror 2 is live).

You will need a blank floppy to extract the downloaded exe file onto.

Boot with this disk, watch for the CDROM drive letter being assigned.

Once in DOS

Type -
: (hit enter) for example D:
cd win98 (hit enter)
setup (hit enter)

Biggest problem I had with my new system was finding Win98 Motherboard drivers.

Well I managed to get it to dual boot...had to partition one drive because both my spares now appear to be junk.

For some reason can't get my SBLive to work in 98 even though I got the drivers...and 98 will not recognize my Combatstick. Gonna keep pressing on and happy to hear any comments/advice. You guys have been a great help and got me much further down the trail. Thx and !, az:)

Question,

My father wants to build a new computer, but he wants to keep his old harddrive with all the "junk" on it.

Can he build out a new computer, get another XP license, and then just plug in the old harddrive?  would this be a "dual boot" computer?

Would the old harddrive and its copy of XP etc... work on the new pc?

Thanks,

Balsy

No it wouldn't be a dual boot.
To have a dual boot system you have to install 2 different operating systems into the same computer on separate partitions or drives.  Install oldest OS first.  It is possible to have 95, 98, 2000, xp & linux all booting on the same system. Just takes a lot of work. (Helps if you enjoy that kind of tinkering)

There are a couple of ways to do what you want.

First off when you build a new computer you really want to start with a clean (preferably new) formated, partitioned hard drive.  Then install windows, then motherboard drivers, directx, usb drivers etc. Then video, sound dvd what have you.

Once all that is done, you have the choice of

A hook the 2nd "old" drive up as a slave, either manually copy, use hd utility's to "disk copy" or otherwise copy the info on the "old" drive to a clean partition on the new drive.

B Hook the "Old" drive up as slave & leave it there.

Either way I'm afraid your looking at a new copy of XP, unless your a pirate & are willing to  cheat, lie or otherwise bend the rules.

IF the old drive is hooked up as a slave, all the programs etc.. would still be able to be run off  of it?

Thanks Ghosth,

Balsy

Ok folks, Frankenpute lives...even got my sound card working. Windows 98se still won't recognize my Ch F16 Combatstick no matter what I do. It works in XP, (although not programmable of course). Any ideas? Thx, az

If you want the CH gear to work in XP, go to the CH website and download the analog drivers here:

http://www.chproducts.com/retail/tech_support_pc.html

Its not perfect.  For the speedkeys stuff, ask AKAK.  He is the resident expert and can tell you how to make it work under XP.  Its a booger but it can be done.  I just have the basic analog stick and Pro pedals, with the analog drivers linked above.  My gear works just like it did in Win98.

Also, those drivers will work for 98 and ME as well.

A note on your SBLive! soundcard in Win98 ..........

I've found the drivers they shipped for 98 were corrupt on the CD.  Or at least they dont work with any computer I've had in the last 4 years.  Try using the XP WMD drivers.  The Live! soundcard was really designed for XP.  If you use the WMD drivers it warns you may experience an impact on system performance while gaming.  So it tells you to install the VXD drivers designed for 98 instead.  Then it says some applications wont work right if you use the VXD drivers.  Arrrgh!  Again though, I never could get the VXD drivers to work at all, so try using the WMD drivers.

Just wanted to say thx to all the folks who have helped in this endeavor.

As it turns out I stumbled, (backed bellybutton first) into a way to get Windows XP to recognize Speedkeys. It's so simple as to be incredible. I'm sure others have figured this out but have not found it mentioned in a years worth of research.
Thx again, , az

Aztec, what was the solution?  I've looked and whatever trick you've found hasn't been posted about on the net by others.  (I'm assuming that if you got XP to recognize Speedkeys you're able to program your CH gear with it too)

Right click on the speedkeys.exe, select properties, then Compatibility. XP will run speedkeys that way.

Doh, left out "Check the box for 'Run this program in Compatibility Mode for' , then select Windows 95."

This works on my system anyway, I just need to find a gameport throttle now, and then... I shall rule the world. Or, realistically, maybe just have a throttle and some more buttons. Close enough.
