Title: 7900GT......
Post by: humble on April 19, 2006, 11:04:33 PM
very impressive so far.......

Running on "rack box" with 1 gig PC3200 and onboard sound...512 textures at 1280 x 1024 with all sliders maxed. As per skuzzys input on eaglers thread stuff is loaded to system memory not vc memory. Mostly maxed at my LCD's optimal refresh rate (60)....never gets out of the 50's even in low furball over burning base with lots of GV's etc......

Makes a huge difference in game play......even compared to my X800 pro....

Humble,
What CPU are you running? My understanding is the frame rate is constrained by the weaker of the CPU or the graphics card and Aces High is pretty CPU intensive.

Today I slapped a 7900GT in my Athlon 64 3000+ computer and noticed an improvement over my 6600GT in its ability to keep my LCD pegged at 60fps. The big test will come when we have 30 bombers on the runway, awaiting takeoff. I plan to add a fast X2 CPU when Aces High fully supports this technology.

Humble,
try to install the AH2's hires package and use the 1024 textures option. I'm curious to see how your 7900GT will perform.
Those setting put my P4-3.4, 2GByte RAM and 7800GS (with 512 MBytes and 20 pipelines) on his knees (I mean 20-30 fps) no matter how low I set the sliders and terrain settings.
AH2 seems definitely CPU limited ... not a great satisfaction for high end system users trying to max everything out. Try to look the new B-17 at 1280 or 1600 with hires package installed and (then) not installed.

I am now running 1024 textures, all loaded in system memory, per skuzzy.
Make sure AA and AF is "application controlled", which is off in AH, v-sync on, quality "high" - desktop nividea settings, and sliders maxed to left for the top two and about middle for gv view on the bottom slider inside AH. Running 1280 x 1024 on both my desktop and AH. FPS stays maxed at 60, refresh rate limit, set to unlimited in AH, stays at 60 95% of the time and haven't seen it drop below 50. I am also able to run IL2 FB at its highest resolution and "excellent" video settings for directx.

I had to set my PCI thingy up to 128 as Kev informed in my 7800 gs troubleshooting thread and I had to install two more fans in my tower. I have a giant supermicro tower that now has two 80 mm intake fans (bottom front) and three out flowing fans (one card fan - bottom and two 90 mm fans on top) plus the cpu and vcard cooling fans.

my specs are:
AMD64 3400 939 pin
Asus 8VA
2 GB ram
eVGA 7800 GS CO AGP
19" Samsung 930B LCD
Audigy2 soundcard

gatt, humble - with AA and AF off (you don't need them at that 1024 res), you should be able to run the hi-res package as i do now

Try turning on antialiasing.  I run 1280x1024 with 2xQ antialiasing with my A64 3700 and 6800GT, and I see an image quality improvement with very little framerate decrease.  Of course I don't have the sliders all the way to the left, but I prefer having some antialiasing over maxing out the sliders.

Give it a shot...  You may be able to turn on AA without much of a framerate hit.

The bottleneck at the moment for ALL the new video cards is the CPU.

There isn't a CPU that is fast enough to push these cards to the limit, all they allow you to do is run the game at higher resolutions and with more eye candy as these are GPU not CPU dependent.

I get 100fps (maxed refresh on monitor) with -

1024x768 (tried 1280x1024 but everything looks tiny).
1024 textures.
everything cached in system memory.
all sliders maxed.
AF off
AA at x4 (x8 looks a little blurry)

Sig contains system specs.

So a 7800GT / 7900GT is over kill ?

Hubmle sees improvement over X800 Pro, and PapaFox get more FPS compared to 6600 GT.

I think I buy a AMD 64 system. Maybe 3000+ 1.8GHz or slighty faster. I think those 4000+ are just to expencive for a minimal boost in performance.

So what vid card would be in nice balance with a AMD 64 3000+ ?

Faster than X800Pro and 6600GT maybe and cheeper than a 7800GT/7900GT :)  ?

I'm running a 7900GT, 2GB of DDR400 and an FX57.

Everything runs AstroGlide smooth. AHII never drops below 60fps (vsync enabled).

EDIT: I should add I'm running at 1600x1200x32 with textures at 1024 and the high-res texture pack.

Slightly off-topic, but...

Am I the only person using a Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS? I didn't see anyone else in the "pics of your setup" running one.

I have a 3500+ with 1 gig of PC3200. I did run it in high res but it had a few "studders" which I think is related to the amount of system RAM. I think you need to 2 gig to run the high res textures fully loaded into system memory (not sure however). My 19 inch LCD doesnt support the higher res....but my 37in one does:)....i'm planning on loading it up for 1st time on line on the bigger display tomorrow.....will post a report....

I'll load up the high res again and take a hop just to double check stuff....

Quite a few people play the game with the Cougar.

Cool! Good to see I'm not alone. :)

My TrackIR4 Pro is coming tomorrow, and I can't wait!! :t

No luck for me ... :(

My P4-3.4Ghz, system memory 2Gbyte RAM, 7800GS (with 512Mbyte RAM and 20 pipelines, like a 7800GT) cannot run AH2 well (I mean 20-30fps average) at 1280x1024, 1024 textures with hires package, loaded only in system memory, sliders all on right side, no AA no AF. Slightly better with the 1024 res but, with a 19" monitor, both 1280 and 1024 res with no AA have too much jaggies.

I was looking into the 1024 textures but the comparison pics skuzzy posted shows little improvement over the 512 textures. If the difference was like it is between 128 & 256 & 512 it'd be worth it I.M.O. Am I missing something or are the comparison pics pretty much accurate?

There's something wrong with your system, then; That system should run AHII at 60fps average, not 20.

Check in your display settings to make sure that the Hardware Acceleration slider is all the way to the right and ensure that the video card isn't being crippled in that way.

How does it run other games?

P.S. I do this for a living, so feel free to ask me questions. :P

with 1024 textures loaded at 1280 x 1024 I'll get 56-60 in the tower and 54-60 on takeoff based on whats burning etc....framerates seem to stay in the 50's almost all the time with a very occasional dip to 47 or so.....runs pretty smoothly so far with only once questionable elelment. I was flying a 38 and got into a fight with a pony, I lit him up and he started to microwarp fairly badly...couldnt tell if it was a warp or a frame studder due to smoke rendering or even detail on pony.....

flew another hop over different terrain (A65 to A69) and FR was choppier dipping down as low as 38...but was in a 1 on 3-4 over eny base with carrier and base puffies + airfield...fight was vertical from 8k down to deck and up for 5+ min with no issues of any kind...accept I appear to have had a connection issue which might have accounted for earlier problem....so all in all you can run hi-res with full detail (all sliders full left) on a 3500+ with this card and should have zero issues...

Ahhh, fixed it :)  I reinstalled the latest official drivers and uncecked the max fps at 60 box. I set it on unlimited. Now with 1280 res, 4X AA, 1024 textures and default sliders I get an average 75-90 fps.

Thx Visigothan.

Any time! :) Glad to see it wasn't something serious.

We should start a "Perpetual Tech Questions and Answers" thread. :)
