How do ya guys combat a co-alt spit16?
I have had to alter my flying style slightly to adapt the new drag setting....
Seem to do OK against most opponents (win some lose some).....
Can handle spits1,5 and 8 relatively easily. Spits 9 and 14 require a little care, but in the end, more often than not, they die......(usually due to lack of roll/turn rate at high speeds).
However the spit16 has be baffled. No matter what I do it always manages to outclimb or outturn or outroll me, else it just seems to hang on the prop for infinity.........end result is I end up being target practice for them 20mms.
Prior to patch i used to kill spit16s by getting slow and then using my *then* superior low speed handling with the flaps out to set up a pass or just plain sucker them into augering........now since I cant do that, whats my best bet to defeat one?

The Spit 16 holds almost all the cards against the 38.
Above 15k you have speed advantage.
At SL you are faster once both have exausted WEP.
If it looks like the guy is going to beat you...run.
If you're above 15K you should get away easily. Below that you'll need to be more careful and bug out earlier.
Also, it's not a crime to bring friends to the fight.

Spit 16 is just a better plane, no way around it so there's very little "do this do that" that will solve it. Quite a few other planes will also out everything the 38.
BUT! it's not the plane, it's the pilot. Yes, your plane will not win the fight for you, at best it will assist. You have to understand ACM better, read his moves better and extract every bit of what your ride can do. Luckily, most Spit16 pilots are not that good so they are very much killable.
Welcome to the world of interesting rides instead of uber rides. If you love the P-38, nothing else matters.

p.s.
try the P47 it's even more fun and it is a real men's plane ;)

While I am by no means a pro at the 38, it is my favorite ride. In a 1 vs 1 with a spit 16 I try not to give the spit a good shot. Stay as close as possible but completely on the defensive. If its a good spit pilot, its a fight for your life as statyed above, but if its a rookie, he'll/she'll make mistake and you'll get an opening... just make it count when you get it :D

agree, though im no ace. 38's are fun planes to fly, the only problem, is that against a spit16 and pilot skill being equal.....your odds are not good. it is frustrating at times, but flying 'interesting" planes is a reward in-of-itself.

get the spit 16 in a slow rolling scirssors, once it get slow it has a bad tendency to stall, the 38 will actually out turn it for 3/4 of a turn or so, get it slow and keep cutting your throttle and rolling over him not giving him an angle, he'll keep trying to stay nose up to get guns and will eventually stall out... the statement that the spit 16 out performs the 38 is a rediculous claim, the 38 is a very good opponent for the 16. you get those 16's slow and they suck bad... another tactic is to just shoot em from D1000 out while there making a reverse turn... spits and other slower planes like that are easy targets for a 38... the 38 will also out loop/stall fight it all day long if flown correctly, chopping throttle at top of the loop just before stall helps as it will cause the nose to plunge down quickly... rolling scissors and verticle wise i think the 38 is above most planes, even the dweeb infested spit 16

THANKS guys for the responses.......

P-38 vs. Spitfire XVI is my favorite matchup. If I have the speed, I'll keep the fight fast (above 300mph IAS) where the P-38 has the slight edge in high speed turning or get the Spitfire XVI to burn its E and commit to a low/stall speed fight were again the P-38 has the edge. Even with the current bug that effects the P-38 at full flaps, the P-38 still has the edge in a stall fight. Those clipped wings that give the Spitfire XVI its excellent roll rate comes at a price and you'll see the price they pay when wallowing around at near stall speeds.
Of course most will say that I have no clue as what I'm talking about but with an average of almost 5 to 1 ratio against the Spitfire XVI since it was released, I don't think I'm wrong. Nor were all the Spitfire XVI drivers I've run against either newbies or crappy pilots. I don't consider guys like HtHide or Fuze to be subpar in the Spitfire. But as with all things, YMMV.
