Title: Atypical, colorful, razorback -- story?
Post by: Krusty on April 23, 2006, 11:55:42 AM
Does anybody know the story behind these rather colorful markings? Have any more info about the plane in question? I've seen a similar tail marking on other razorbacks but not the broad stripe down the side, that seems to be unique to this craft (seems to be).

Thought I'd seen it before.  Captions on both photos explain the details

Thanks, but, no mention of why he went with an almost "retro" style for his plane? No special theme, just a random (but colorful) set of markings?

That time of the war in the Pacific, some of the pre-war tail stripes etc were showing up on a lot of fighters.  Some of the early Jugs were getting stripped down to bare metal and all sorts of fancy paint jobs were showing up.

It was all part of being on the winning side at that point and looking for a fight.  OD went away and color was the way to go.  Here I am, come and get me seemed to be the attitude.

The fuselage stripe was probably just his way of having fun.  The tail stripes were a group wide marking on Jugs, 51s and even some of the 38s in 5th FC.
